Just a few stark cells are all that remain of the Hoa Lo prison where Lt. Cmdr. John McCain spent three years in captivity during the Vietnam War and where a faded picture of the Navy officer greeted his children during a recent visit.
Before the trip, he said, they would ask about what kind of food he ate and the conditions under which he lived there. By the visit's end, they were discussing what caused the war, why the United States was there and why it lost.
"Sometimes it seems a little like reading about ancient history," said McCain. "I think being there they appreciated it more."
"It's a little unsettling just to walk through that, just because I can't imagine the suffering he must have gone through seeing some of the rooms they had to stay in and the conditions they had," Jack McCain said.
At Truc Bach Lake, where McCain landed after ejecting from his plane in 1967, a crude cement statue depicts McCain being dragged from the water. The inscription notes his capture and misidentifies him as an Air Force pilot.
"It is a great insult. I was in the Navy," said McCain, a third-generation officer in the Navy.

I'll digress now for just a few minutes to tell you a bit about the history of Vietnam, give a few book reviews, and tell you a bit about the dark side of Vietnam. These things aren't all that related to the trip itself, but I want to give a bit of a balanced view, and couldn't quite figure out quite where to put them in the narrative. I decided to lump them all together in one page, and then get on with the cycling. If you aren't interested in these topics, you can skip this page without hurting the narrative.
Vietnam History - The Really Really Short Version
I'm going to crunch 4,000 years of history into a few paragraphs so I will have to leave out a few details. The Vietnamese ethno-linguistic group formed during the bronze age around 3000 B.C. Most of the people that ultimately gave the racial and cultural control of the region settled in the fertile deltas of the Red River in the north and the Mekong in the south. What is now Vietnam consists of a fairly long plane that runs down the coast with the river deltas making up the most noticeable part, and a mountain range now called the Central Highlands that runs up the center and the eastern side. The northern and southern parts were both settled independently and have been joined as one country and split back apart many times. Over the years, Vietnam went through a long series of cycles that went something like this:

Voice of the Masses: THE ROLE OF BUDDHISTS IN VIETNAM HISTORY Following is the speech of Venerable Thich Quang Do, Head of the Hoa Dao Office (the executive office of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam), sent to the Church VIII Conference held in the United States on May 9, 1999. The communist government of Vietnam has declared the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV) illegal and non-existent. The Hoa Dao Office was shut down after all of its documents and seals were confiscated by Public Security cadres. Today, the government allows only its state-controlled Buddhist Church of Vietnam to operate; continues its detainment of Venerable Thich Huyen Quang, the UBCV patriarch; maintains a strict isolation of Venerable Thich Quang Do; holds a large number of the Church's leaders in prison camps; and continues its hostile policy toward all forms of organized religions. Respected Elders,
All Clergies,
All Buddhist Followers, On behalf of the Two-Chambers Council and as the Head of the Hoa Dao Office, I respectfully convey to the Conference the congratulation from all clergies and followers inside the country. At the same time, we send you the heartfelt concerns of people who are living in a dark corner of the world. [This is the place] where pure violence has become a philosophical subject challenging other main streams of Western and Eastern philosophies; where human dignity and the conscience of humankind are being tested. And via the Conference, on behalf of all clergies, followers, and those being oppressed for holding on steadfastly to their belief, I would like to express our deep appreciation to those international human rights organizations, dignitaries, and religious and social activists, who for a quarter of a century have constantly supported the voice of morality and called on the conscience of humankind not to let this poor and backward country severed from the rest of the civilized world.

Airborne/Airmobile 3rd Battalion
Synopsis of Actions 1967-1969
Vietnam
Initially deployed to the Republic of Vietnam on 2 October 1967 , the 3rd of the 506th had arrived in the vanguard of its 101st Airborne Division parent unit, and been redeployed as a mobile task force standing alone (as befitted its Currahee motto) over the entire II Corps region, being OPCON to various US and ARVN units carrying the banner of the Screaming Eagle into the midst of many crucial struggles.
The unit reached Cam Rahn Bay 2 October 1967 and was soon committed to its first mission, Operation Rose, in the mountains south of Phan Rang. Then came Operation Klamath Falls in Song Mao and Bao Loc. Contact was light in these initial operations but they proved invaluable as shakedown and confidence building vehicles. This was timely experience since the mettle of the "Currahees" was soon to be tested in the Tet Offensive of 1968
On 17 January 1968, the Battalion was detached from the 101st and sent south to Phan Thiet . The Battalion Base was located at LZ Betty in AO Byrd and the maneuver units soon moved out to secure LZ Judy and LZ Bartlett in the mountains. Their

The French (1887 - 1954)
The French took 30 years to completely overcome resistance in Vietnam. In 1887, the French ordered the establishment of Indochina ( which got it's name from the position between China and India on the trade route) - a French colony consisting of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The Nguyens survived but had lost their power under French rule.
Land reform and high taxation angered many Vietnamese and many resistant movements started covert operations against the French, the French took many tough measures and many of the leaders of these movements were sentenced to death or thrown into prison. Ho Chi Minh established the Vietnamese communist party at this time. The Vietnam War and the Domino Theory
At the end of the Second World War, Ho Chi Minh pronounced that Vietnam was an independent state in September 1945. But the truth was that it was only partly liberated, and the Geneva Convention helped in dividing the country into two. Ho Chi Minh wanted total unification and invaded the South. America came into the action during the 50s and early 60s and what should have been a peaceful entry snd deployment soon escalated into war. Driven by the idea of the Domino Principle, (simply it means that if one country falls to Communism all of the others will follow)

Evacuation from the roof of the U.S. embassy in Saigon, April 29, 1975.
HISTORY
Of Ladders and Letters
On the anniversary of Saigon's fall, a trove of documents sheds new light on old traumas
By DOUGLAS BRINKLEY The owner of a chain of supercenters in Michigan would hardly seem a match for Henry Kissinger in a debate over the Vietnam War, but at the 1995 Gerald R. Ford Foundation board meeting, the former Secretary of State indeed lost a heated argument on the subject to one Fred Meijer of Grand Rapids. At issue was an 18-step metal ladder, utterly unremarkable except that in April 1975 thousands of desperate South Vietnamese, fleeing capture by the invading North Vietnamese for freedom in the U.S., had clambered up its sturdy steps onto the roof of the U.S. embassy in Saigon and into American helicopters perched there. To Meijer, the gray ladder was an uplifting symbol of hope; to Kissinger, it was a grim reminder of the U.S. failure in South Vietnam that had cost more than 58,000 American lives. It was Meijer's entrepreneurial son Hank who unwittingly sparked the contention when he went to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon) in October 1994, in search of promising new business ventures that might result from the Clinton Administration's impending normalization of relations with Vietnam. While driving down Le Duan Boulevard one afternoon, Hank Meijer asked his driver to stop at the former U.S. embassy, atop which the tragic last moments of America's involvement in Vietnam had been played out. Abandoned since and allowed to run down into a weed-choked eyesore where only chickens wandered among the shards of broken glass, the padlocked building was slated for the wrecking ball.

The early history of Vietnam is that of Tonkin Annam , and Cochin China . The first Europeans to arrive were the Portuguese in 1535. Dutch, French, and English traders came in the 17th cent., at which time missionaries entered the area, winning many converts to Roman Catholicism. The persecution of missionaries and of their Vietnamese converts by the ruler of Vietnam was a factor prompting French conquest in the 19th cent. The French captured Saigon in 1859, and after a period of warfare, organized (1867) the colony of Cochin China. In 1884, France declared protectorates over Tonkin and Annam; in 1887 it merged Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China with Cambodia to form a union of Indochina , to which Laos was added in 1893.

Vietnam War
Leave Feedback View Feedback The second stage of U.S intervention came after the passing of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution giving president Johnson full war-making power in Vietnam. Immediately after the resolution was passed president Johnson ordered bombing of North Vietnam. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and National Security Adviser McGeorge Bundy declared that a full-scale air war against North Vietnam would depress the morale of the NLF. The bombing did just the opposite, however. The inability of the ARVN to protect U.S. air bases led Johnson’s senior planners to the consensus that U.S. combat forces would be required. On March 8, 1965, 3500 U.S. Marines landed at ðà Nang. By the end of April, 56,000 other combat troops had joined them; by June the number had risen to 74,000. Richard Nixon who was determined to end the war brought about Vietnamization, which was the final stage of U.S involvement in the conflict in Vietnam. During his campaign for the presidency, Nixon announced that he had a secret plan to end the war. In July 1969, after he had become president, he issued what came to be known as the Nixon doctrine, which stated that U.S. troops would no longer be directly involved in Asian wars. He ordered the withdrawal of 25,000 troops, to be followed by more, and he lowered draft calls. In the end Vietnamization would remove all U.S troops from Vietnam and the South Vietnamese military would assume all the fighting. U.S involvement in Vietnam was originally driven by anti-communist views, however towards the end of the battle the United States was just trying not to be humiliated in a war that seemed to be without a cause.
