Vietnam Time and Date Vietnam History Back to Top TArchaeological findings indicate that settlers in the Red River Delta may have been among the first peoples in East and Southeast Asia to practice agriculture. By the end of the 2nd millennium bc, Vietnamese civilization had begun to enter the Bronze Age. The ancestors of the modern Vietnamese were one of many scattered communities that lived in what are now South China and northern Vietnam during the 1st millennium BC. According to local tradition, a line of hereditary kings ruled over the ancient kingdom of Van Lang in the Red River Delta for thousands of years. Van Lang was conquered by Thuc Phan, who founded a small Vietnamese kingdom called Au Lac. Relatively little is known about the origins of the Vietnamese. They first appeared in history as the so-called “Lac” peoples, who lived in the Red River delta region, in what is now northern Vietnam. Some scholars have suggested that the Lac were closely related to other peoples, known as the Viet (called the Yüeh by the Chinese), who inhabited the coastal region of East Asia from the Yangtze River to the Red River delta during the 1st millennium BC. Others have expressed doubt about this supposition, noting that modern-day Vietnamese share many cultural and linguistic traits with other non-Chinese peoples living in neighbouring areas of Southeast Asia. It is now generally believed that the Lac peoples were the result of a mixture between Australo-Melanesian inhabitants who had lived in the area since Paleolithic times and Asiatic peoples who later migrated into the area from China.

Vietnam's History/Background Legend has it that Vietnam began with a mountain fairy, Au Co, and the dragon king, Lac Long Quan. Mother Au Co had 100 eggs, all of which hatched and were sons. The dragon king left his mountain fairy and took with him 50 sons back to the sea, while Au Co took the other 50 sons and returned to the mountains. Until 1945, a dragon was symbolic of the ruler and with kings having a dragon tattooed to their upper thighs until 1293. Since the sons were hatched, the mountain tribe Muong is linked to them, especially since their totem is a bird, while the dragon totem is supposed to protect the Kinh from water dangers. Vietnam's early history includes Chinese takeover, and the Vietnamese responded to it by resisting Chinese rule. Incredibly, the first serious revolt was started by the widow of a killed Chieftain and her sister, the Trung Sisters in A.D. 39. Although their uprising was initially successful , four years later the Chinese re-entered the Red River Delta and recaptured the Vietnamese. Although the following uprisings were for the most part unsuccessful, by the year 939, when the situation in China was chaotic, Ngo Quyen led a Vietnamese rebellion that was successful against the forces occupying his local area. With the Chinese defeat, Ngo Quyen established the Ngo Dynasty which didn't have a long existence. When Quyen died five years later in 944, the dynasty collapsed and a lot of civil unrest followed.

History: For many years, Vietnam formed part of the French colony of Indochina, along with Cambodia and Laos. With Vichy French agreement, in 1941, the Japanese occupied Vietnam during their World War II sweep through South East Asia. The resistance to the Japanese was led by the Indochinese Communist Party, formed by Ho Chi Minh in 1930, and its armed wing, the Viet Minh. Following the Japanese defeat in 1945, the Communists proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In 1946, France sent a large expeditionary force to re-establish their control. After eight years of fierce fighting, the struggle ended in the defeat of the French garrison at Dien Bien Phu (1954).
Vietnamese troops finally withdrew from Cambodia in September 1989. Freed of this burden, Vietnam was able to concentrate on rebuilding its own economy, having introduced a home-grown version of

The Kingdom of Funan
In the 1st century of Christian reckoning the kingdom of Funan establishes itself in the Mekong delta , which today is Vietnamese territory. The founders of this kingdom have probably been Indian immigrants . In subsequent centuries Funan develops into a seafaring merchant power without expanding into a state with a large land area. It is strategically well located to become a trading power as in those days ships travelled almost exclusively close to the coastline and the land tip of the Mekong delta was an important stopover on the sea route between China and the Malay realms on the Malay Peninsula, on Sumatra and on Java. In the 6th century the kingdom of Funan dissolves. An important reason for the decline of Funan is the improved seafaring technology allowing ships to stray farther from the coasts. Funan is conquered by the kingdom of Champa, which has established itself to the North of Funan.
The Kingdom of Champa
In the 2nd century of Christian reckoning, the kingdom of Champa establishes itself in the area modern-day Danang . It is founded by the people of the Chams, who are ethnically not related to the Vietnamese but probably have immigrated from an area today belonging to

Welcome! Now is the time to visit Vietnam as the country slowly opens its doors to visitors from all over the world. This gracious land long synonymous with conflict and revolution, has much to offer visitors: ancient Cham ruins, majestic pagodas, verdant landscapes, hideaway resorts and mind-blowing adventure trips. Then there are the people, who, after a thousand years of Chinese rule, a century of French colonialism, and a troubled few decades of American influence, have remained indomitably Vietnamese in spirit and character. We have sometimes been weak and sometimes powerful, but at no time have we suffered from a lack of heroes, declaimed Vietnamese scholar Nguyen Trai in the 15th century. Vietnam's history is one of heroic struggle against foreign menaces. Also, it is the history of several cultures. The differences that came to a head between North and South Vietnam this century stemmed in part from historic regional disparities and rivalries. The present-day term 'Vietnamese' does not accurately describe the country's cultural diversity, for the term embraces 54 ethnic groups, as well as the Viet Kieu - Vietnamese living abroad. Origins Legend has it that Vietnam emerged from the union between the King of the Sea, Lac Long Quan, and the Goddess Au Co. Half of their 100 sons lived with the father in the sea while the others lived with the mother in the mountains. From the latter group sprang the An Lac nation and its people, the Lac Viets - the fusion point of legend and history.

Essay of the Month The Bronze Age
Towards the end of the second millenary B.C., copper and especially bronze made their appearance. Vietnamese soil contains many deposits of copper, tin, lead and zinc, and bronze industry underwent remarkable development. Western archaeologists whose excavations were followed by veritable plunder have given the civilization in Vietnam the name of DONG SON civilization, the first important site having been discovered in Dong son, Thanh hoa province. In fact, Dong son represents an advanced stage of the Bronze Age, and many sites have been discovered in recent years all over the territory of Vietnam, with large quantities of artifacts; all told, about thirty sites with tens of thousands of artifacts. The first copper, then bronze objects appeared beside polished stone implements and earthenware with a still Neolithic character. Sandstone moulds for manufacturing axes, spears, and knives have been found in many places. The quality of the bronze and the shapes improved little by little, eventually ending up with the remarkable creations of Dong son. This evolution took many centuries. While it was marked by external elements, these were not decisive, as claimed by Western archaeologists.

Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding travel destination. S haped like an elongated S , Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square milesmaking it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly waterfalls and beaches.
