Part I: The Reconstruction of American Society, 1865-1917 Lecture 01
Reconstructing the Nation

America has been split apart by three major wars: in the 1770's the American Revolution; in the 1970's the Vietnam War; and, in the middle of this period, the Civil War. Each war has dramatically changed the generation engaged in battles as well as the generations that followed. Lecture #01 will examine the repercussions of the Civil War, its effects on the American people, and the agreements and disagreements within the nation over the meanings of "Reconstruction."
See Calendar for course outline and lecture topics

Lecture 02

The "New South"
By the late 1860s, some Southerners were already calling for a more diversified economy cotton was no longer "king." Increasingly there was a move from farm to factory, and many people encouraged industrialization in the South and an increased capital investment in the Southern economy from outside sources. This lecture explores the economic transformation and the racial politics of the "New" South after the Civil War.

From the Other Side

American Involvement 1954-1975: The 21 year-long Vietnam War was the longest in our Nation's history, beginning in 1954 when the Geneva Accords divided the Southeast Asian country into North and South Vietnam. Soon thereafter, the Communist North started a guerrilla war and the Republic of South Vietnam sought assistance from the U.S. with the first Americans dying there in 1954.
The "advisory effort" grew rapidly and in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered a full-scale deployment of U.S. armed forces. Eventually, 2.7 million Americans served in that "limited conventional war" that was never officially declared a WARresulting in uncertainty at home as well as in Vietnamwhile more than 58,215 lost their lives; 80,000 were severely wounded; 220,000 were wounded; and some 2,400 remain missing and unaccounted for!
During the war, soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines fought with heroism and determination under some of the most difficult circumstances ever encountered by American military personnel. Tragically, upon their return home, they received virtually no recognition for the service and sacrifice because of the raging domestic controversy over U.S. war policy.

This page is a study guide for those interested in learning about the Vietnam War, using the best resource available: books. This guide is designed so that readers of any interest level can pick a prioritized list of books which will give them the most information for whatever effort they wish to make. An unusual and desirable feature are word counts and estimated study time for each book, the only good way to measure study workload. Also included are some fascinating author interviews from Booknotes Most of these books are in print; others can be acquired through an online used book finder like BookFinder or Alibris The guide's goal is stated in my Philosophy of Study . Also see why you should study the Vietnam War . If you prefer studying using online resources (which is far less effective), see my Studying the Vietnam War Online . To find out who I am, see About the Author , or look at Author's Visit to Vietnam
Recommended Study Track Read the first (or only) selection from each of the following sections, and read them in that order. You might want to pick Sections 7 and 8 early in your study to use as companion guides.

The Vietnam War Internet Project is an educational organization dedicated to providing information and documents about the various Indochina Wars and to the collection and electronic publication on the web of oral histories and memoirs of both those who served in and those who opposed those conflicts.
"No 'healing', no apologies, no memorials, nothing can possibly compensate for the damage done and the pain inflicted....The only thing we can possibly do, twenty years too late, is to try and tell the truth." Historian Eric Bergerud (UC Berkeley) wrote the above passage in his second book, "Red Thunder, Tropic Lightning". His first, based on his dissertation, was a scathing indictment of the American war in Vietnam. But as he began to collect oral histories from members of the 25th Infantry Division for "Red Thunder", he began to doubt the accepted "conventional wisdom" regarding US combat troops. The problem, of course, is that there is no one TRUTH about the Indochina Wars. Instead, many different truths coexist and compete. To be sure, there are facts, a myriad of them - the tonnage of bombs dropped by the US during the war, for example. But facts, while useful and necessary, do not lead to understanding without a framework, a matrix, upon which to place them. And there is the rub. In analyzing and making sense of fact, cultural and social reality is constructed. By this process, past events and actions become part of the historical sense of self of a society. In the case of the Indochina Wars, there are many such realities, each with its own truth, each with its own understanding. The sense of self connected with these wars is still very much a contested issue in many of the countries that participated in them.

The Vietnam War A History in Documents MARILYN B. YOUNG, New York University, JOHN J. FITZGERALD, and A. TOM GRUNFELD, Empire State College The Vietnam War tells the story of one of the most divisive episodes in modern American history through primary sources, ranging from government documents, news reports, speeches, popular songs to memoirs, writings by Vietnam veterans (including coauthor John Fitzgerald), and poetry by Vietnamese and Americans on matching themes. The book begins in the 19th century when Vietnam became a French colony, and traces the insidious route by which the United States became involved in a war on the other side of the world. "Comprised of first- and second-hand accounts of American policy in Vietnam during the 1960s. Its primary sources are held together chronologically with narrative. Political cartoons, U.S. government files, Vietnamese iconography, and song lyrics by Bruce Springsteen are among the book's most compelling and evocative elements." Hampshire Gazette "Provides historials and students of history with a wealth of first-hand information missing from past conflicts. Those "primary sources"...provide the basis for a different way to teach history - allowing students to decide the meaning."

VIETNAM: THE IMPOSSIBLE WAR
Against the celebrated and glorious backdrop of American history, the Vietnam War stands ghastly out of place. The war was an exercise in economic, military, and political futility. The greatest tragedy of the Vietnam War, however, stems from the unnecessary deaths of 58 000 young American boys and the installment of terror, mistrust, and sorrow in those who found a way to survive in an inferno where the laws of man were obsolete. In all, I dedicate this page to the Vietnam veterans who saw more destruction in 365 days than mankind should ever see.

The Final Invasion: Plattsburgh, the War of 1812's Most Decisive Battle by David G. Fitz-Enz, John R. Elting (Editor), Christopher Prevost

American History National Geographic's Inside the White House (1995) The history of the most famous house in the United States is a fascinating one, and this video seamlessly blends aspects of that monumental past with present-day behind-the-scenes access. The filmmakers were allowed to shoot preparations for a state dinner hosted by President and Mrs. Clinton for Boris and Mrs. Yeltsin from the setting of 1,500 pieces of White House china to the intricate choreographing of the meal service, as well as security checks and final briefings for the President. Intercut with these scenes are segments discussing the White House's history, architecture, and high-profile residents, as well as anecdotes from all surviving former residents. U.S. Constitution/Bill of
Rights (1999)

Teachers and parents alike can use this to make the Constitution accessible on many levels. The program is targeted at junior high students and high school freshmen and sophomores and is divided into sections corresponding to the articles of the Constitution. The American Revolution (1994)
This six-tape set provides a clear and complete narrative of the events surrounding the birth of America. Unfortunately, it is a bit dry, as the repetitive music is distracting and certain images are shown far too frequently. However, the varied materials used to tell this tale will please history buffs.
