When they first arrived in the United States, Asian (usually Chinese) immigrants were welcomed, or at least tolerated. After the California gold rush brought thousands of Chinese to California, however, Asian immigrants faced restrictive laws and occasional violence.
In the late 1800s Chinese, and eventually other Asians, were excluded from citizenship . These laws were repealed during World War II , followed by further immigration-law changes, making it easier for Asians to enter the United States. Today, Asian immigrants have a high rate of assimilation and participation in the American mosaic. Gold Rush Boom
The Chinese were the first Asians to arrive in large numbers. By the 1830s Chinese were selling goods in New York City and toiling in Hawaiian sugarcane fields. Gold was discovered in California in 1848, eventually attracting thousands of Chinese miners and contract laborers. In 1850, just

Introductory Essay to Vietnam: A Television History by David McCullough The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular war in which Americans ever fought. And there is no reckoning the cost. The toll in suffering, sorrow, in rancorous national turmoil can never be tabulated. No one wants ever to see America so divided again. And for many of the more than two million American veterans of the war, the wounds of Vietnam will never heal. Fifty-eight thousand Americans lost their lives. The losses to the Vietnamese people were appalling. The financial cost to the United States comes to something over $150 billion dollars. Direct American involvement began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and we fought the war until the cease-fire of January 1973. To a whole new generation of young Americans today, it seems a story from the olden times. In 1983, the unfolding of the Vietnam tragedy was the focus of an extraordinary documentary series broadcast on public television.

http://vietnam.vassar.edu/
America's longest war ended more than two decades ago, yet a number of significant and important questions remain unanswered: What was the nature of the modern Vietnamese revolution? How can we explain the American intervention? Why did the war drag on so long? Critics of the American intervention claim that the war was unnecessary and immoral and that policymakers in Washington dragged the country into an unwanted war. In contrast, a small group of scholars and military leaders offer an emotional defense of American intervention. A careful examination of the myriad sources reveals that neither view is entirely accurate and that the interplay of events was far more complicated than most accounts suggest. This site, developed around the course materials for Robert Brigham's senior seminar on the Viet Nam War at Vassar College , offers students an opportunity to examine some of those sources, including numerous official documents. Brigham was the first American scholar given access to the Vietnamese archives on the war in Hanoi. Included here are his translations of some of the Hanoi documents, offered for examination and study. Overview Documents Links Credits Vassar College

REFERENCE LINKS - AMERICAN HISTORY

Welcome to The Alabama Legislature's Reference American History Links Page. The subheadings above are provided as chronological and topical eras in American history. As with all history, there is overlap. For example, specific subheadings of links are offered for "Cold War", "Civil Rights" and "The U.S. Space Program", all of which cover much the same time period. However, because of the impact of these subjects, it was deemed desirable to provide links specific to these. A subheading, entitled "1950's-1990's" provides a venue for links relating to post-World War II America, but which do not pertain to the aforementioned categories. All of the links on this site have been examined for content and will be routinely checked in order to isolate links that may no longer be operable. Previous Page Next Page Indochina was still another Cold War battlefield. France had controlled Vietnam since the middle of the 19th century, only to be supplanted by Japan during the Second World War. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese communist, sought to liberate his nation from colonial rule and took the American War for Independence as his model. After the Allies defeated the Japanese in 1945, they still had to deal with Ho Chi Minh. France, hoping to regain great-power status, insisted on returning to Vietnam. Ho refused to back down, and the war for liberation continued. The United States, eager to maintain French support for the policy of containment in Europe, provided France with economic aid that freed resources for the struggle in Vietnam. Even that assistance could not prevent French defeat in 1954. At an international conference in Geneva, Vietnam was divided, with Ho in power in the North and Ngo Dinh Diem, a Roman Catholic anti-communist in a largely Buddhist population, heading the government in the South. Elections were to be held two years later to unify the country. Persuaded that the fall of Vietnam could lead to the fall of Burma, Thailand and Indonesia, Eisenhower backed Diem's refusal to hold elections in 1956 and began to increase economic and military aid. Kennedy increased assistance, and sent small numbers of military advisors, but still the struggle between North and South continued. Diem's unpopularity culminated in his overthrow and death in 1963.

WELCOME TO
The Vietnam War: past and present
a resource for high school history teachers
Created and developed by Brian Sims. Last updated on May 26, 1998. INTRODUCTION: As a watershed event in modern American history, the Vietnam War is an integral part of America today. Indeed, its impact far transcended southeast Asia and the men, women, and nations that participated there it also altered the political, economic, social, cultural, and ideological landscapes of the United States. We still live within the shadows of its legacy. The Vietnam War, therefore, is an essential event to cover in the curriculum of a high school American history class. PURPOSE: It is with this idea in mind that "The Vietnam War: past and present" has been designed, for few events have had such a profound effect on America. In addition, as a former teacher, I understand the many challenges that instructors face in trying to cover recent US history at the end of the academic year. This web page, therefore, is meant to give teachers a fast and easy way to learn about the war, as well as ideas for how the internet can be used to teach it. It is my belief that the expanding nature of the world wide web, coupled with the fact that many Vietnam veterans are actively involved in developing their own war related sites, makes the internet a vital resource for understanding Vietnam both as it happened at the time, and as it lives on today. So, whether you are a new teacher looking for lesson plan ideas, or a wise old sage trying to enhance an already existing syllabus, this web page has been built with you in mind.
