2. Domestic Violence Against Men
About domestic violence against men Revised December 04, 2002 domestic violence Is against The Law In Oregon Statistics About domestic Abuse And violence against men
http://www.oregoncounseling.org/Handouts/DomesticViolenceMen.htm
About Domestic Violence Against Men Revised: April 04, 2003 Domestic Violence Is Against The Law In Oregon Statistics About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men Very little in known about the actual number of men who are in a domestic relationship in which they are abused or treated violently by women. In 100 domestic violence situations approximately 40 cases involve violence by women against men. An estimated 400,000 women per year are abused or treated violently in the United States by their spouse or intimate partner. This means that roughly 300,000 to 400,000 men are treated violently by their wife or girl friend. For more information see www.dvmen.org Why Do We Know So Little About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men There are many reasons why we don't know more about domestic abuse and violence against men. First of all, the incidence of domestic violence reported men appears to be so low that it is hard to get reliable estimates. In addition, it has taken years of advocacy and support to encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been done to encourage men to report abuse. The idea that men could be victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable that many men will not even attempt to report the situation. The dynamic of domestic abuse and violence is also different between men and women. The reasons, purposes and motivations are often very different between sexes. Although the counseling and psychological community have responded to domestic abuse and violence against women, there has been very little investment in resources to address and understand the issues of domestic abuse and violence against men. In most cases, the actual physical damage inflicted by men is so much greater than the actual physical harm inflected by women. The impact of domestic violence is less apparent and less likely to come to the attention of others when men are abused. For example, it is assumed than a man with a bruise or black eye was in a fight with another man or was injured on the job or playing contact sports. Even when men do report domestic abuse and violence, most people are so astonished men usually end up feeling like nobody believes them.

Introduction
We make no claim that men do not participate in violence and abuse of their intimate partners. We do claim that current views and laws present a totally unbalanced picture of domestic violence and abuse and that the patriarchal basis used by feminists to justify these draconian laws are false. Studies clearly show that women are as violent as men, and as frequently in domestic situations. Thus, blaming men for the problem is irrational, and does nothing to solve the problem. Our approach is to fix the problem, not the blame. In their 2000 report on family violence, the Revs. Sam and Bunny Sewell point out that: 1. Women are three times more likely than men to use weapons in spousal violence. 2. Women initiate most incidents of spousal violence. 3. Women commit most child abuse and most elder abuse. 4. Women hit their male children more frequently and more severely than they hit their female children. 5. Women

http://www.menstoppingviolence.org/
Men Stopping Violence was founded in 1982 based on the premise that men can work together, in alliance with the battered women's movement, to end men's violence against women.
We are a social change organization dedicated to ending men's violence against women. This violence is a manifestation of social norms that promote the subjection of women. While Men Stopping Violence works with individual men who batter, we know that substantive change involves shifting the norms that tacitly condone and promote violence against women. Men can work as allies to end violence against women-individual and institutional.
Men Stopping Violence is committed to ending all forms of oppression and creating a world that respects all forms of life.

An unaddressed problem
Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of men is something that doesn't get talked about very much. What's worse, when it does get talked about, discussion is almost always limited to the abuse that men do to men. Alot of people are very emotionally and politically invested in believing that violence isn't something that women do, and when the men who have been victims of women try to speak out they frequently encounter negative reactions ranging from outright denial to actual accusations that it's their own fault that they were abused. It's worse when those reactions come from self-identified feminists, who should just plain know better. There is no excuse for any feminist to deny female abusiveness or to attack any man for discussing their experiences of it. Male violence against women is adequately discussed elsewhere, and so I'm devoting some space to talk about this topic, which is not adequately discussed at all.

Myth
95% of the domestic violence is by men against women
Fact
The National Institute of Justice and the Center for Disease Control estimates that 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are the victims of domestic violence each year.
According to this NIJ/CDC National Violence Against Women Survey, 37% of the domestic violence is against men. 100% of the federal domestic violence funding under the Violence Against Women Act is to be used for domestic violence against women. 100% of the federal domestic violence research funds disbursed to several federal agencies is devoted to domestic violence by men against women.
Myth
Domestic violence by women against men is not serious
Fact
According to the NIJ/CDC National Violence Against Women survey, 10.8% of the women but only 4.1% of the men used a knife on the victim. 21.6% of the male victims were threatened with a knife, while only 12.7% of the women were so threatened. 43.2% of the male victims were hit with a hard object capable of causing serious injury, while this was true of only 22.6% of the female victims. When all serious forms of domestic assault were added together, as many assaulted men as women were seriously assaulted.
Myth
All or almost all domestic violence by women is in self-defense.

Other Chapters If Your Man Knew You Feared His Potential For Violence The Face Of Battering Controlling Domestic Violence Against Men The following stories are hearsay and have been gathered from many sources in a nearly random fashion. Sources include a number of men who have written us about their abuse or they are Equal Justice Foundation members. Such stories are used whenever available and there is reason to believe the tales are accurate. In Colorado, where the Equal Justice Foundation is headquartered, we estimate we hear of no better than 1 in 1,000 cases of abused men, and about 1 in 10 of those are coherent enough to present as a vignette. For the rest of the country our guess is that we hear of fewer than 1 in 10,000 cases of violent women and only a few of those are presented here. If you have suffered physical or mental abuse from a female partner and would like to have your summarized story included, please e-mail us at: comments@ejfi.org
