  • Albany Free School The Free School is a process which must be experienced to be fully appreciated. The kids themselves make the choice to join us, after a week's visit (we do not leave that decision to parents alone) and since the changes they may want and need to make occur only over time and the space to discover for themselves who they really are, we ask parents for a commitment to allow their children to stay in the school for at least a year, so that the value we have for them can be fully realized.

    - Based on the Sudbury Valley School (see below), Alpine Valley is a place dedicated to freedom, respect and the joy of learning. Here, learning occurs as that magical state of being fully engaged and freely exploring your interests, gifts and talents. True freedom and responsibility emerge from trust and respect. Every student is a part of all school decisions and stands on equal footing with the staff and each other. Australian Correspondance School - "Established in 1979, ACS has educated thousands of full and part-time students, many of whom have gone onto successful employment, both in industry or in their own businesses. Others have used their courses to develop a hobby, or simply broaden their general education. We currently have over 2500 students enrolled from Australia and around the world." Alternative Education
The Vocational Evaluation Center What is vocational evaluation?
Vocational evaluation is a process to assist special needs and at-risk students identify and explore their unique career interests, aptitudes and skills, and formulate immediate and long-term career goals. Students participate in a comprehensive vocational assessment that may include (but is not limited to) the following elements: psychometric testing, interest testing, aptitude testing, learning style assessment, work sampling, occupational information, and career counseling.
How is a student referred for vocational evaluation?
The Vocational Evaluation Center serves all Virginia Beach City Public Schools' high schools and is currently designed and staffed to provide a comprehensive vocational evaluation for up to two hundred and eighty students per school year. Vocational evaluation referral packets (including referral form, parent permission slip, medical card, and instructions for completing the referral information) are provided to each Virginia Beach high school at the beginning of the school year. Special education teachers obtain parental permission and submit the referral packets for their students. Students in the regular education program should contact their guidance counselors to begin the referral process. Schools are asked to prioritize their students. The students are scheduled on a school-by-school basis, rotating the high schools throughout the school year.
What happens during the vocational evaluation?

VIRGINIA BEACH SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROPOSAL At its March 17 meeting, the Virginia Beach School Board approved the proposed five-year alternative education plan as presented. The plan is a comprehensive proposal that covers all aspects of alternative education in Virginia Beach schools, K - 12. Virginia Beach City Public Schools defines "the purpose of alternative education as a means of restoring an identified student to a level of academic achievement and behavioral responsibility that supports the student’s educational and personal needs." This is accomplished through data-driven programs which address core subject areas, alternative programs, and technical and career education. According to Lindsay Shepheard, coordinator for alternative education, the plan is built on four goals that will drive the decisions relative to the program’s direction for the next five years. They are: GOAL 1: Improve the academic achievement of all Virginia Beach students; GOAL 2: Reduce the number of students needing alternative placements as a result of their behavior; GOAL 3: Reconceptualize and expand the focus of the existing alternative education sites; and

School Vouchers Expected To Survive Court Test
Prof. Vincent Blasi expressed doubts about the long-term effects of a publicly funded voucher system. Private schools that might teach forms of intolerance or aggression—values that run counter to traditionally American ideals of equality and diversity—could receive public funding if school vouchers prove to be a popular alternative to public schools, Law School Dean John C. Jeffries, Jr. said during a panel discussion at the Law School April 1. Jeffries joined professors Barbara Armacost, Vincent Blasi and John Harrison in debating the validity of school vouchers and the potential consequences of a publicly funded voucher system during the program, "The Constitutionality of School Vouchers and the Zelman v. Simmons-Harris Case," sponsored by the Virginia Law Democrats . "Imagine a series of private institutions that are saying illiberal things with public money," Jeffries said. In time, the potential drawbacks of school vouchers will show how committed or not Americans are to a common education rather than to a publicly funded private education, Jeffries said.
