Thomas Jeffersonís importance to the cultural heritage of the Charlottesville area is so well known that the region is often called "Jeffersonís country."
A new University of Virginia study shows that Monticello, Jeffersonís famous home in Albemarle County, also wields a significant economic impact. This is partly due to the high income-level of the many history- and architecture-lovers drawn to the areaís premier tourist attraction.
The typical household income of Monticelloís approximately half-million visitors last year was $72,115, or almost twice the national median figure, according to the study by economist John L. Knapp and research assistant Catherine E. Barchers of U.Va.ís Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. More than a quarter of Monticelloís visitors reported incomes above $100,000 and 94 percent had at least some college education.

"It's just a lot of fun," says the former Huntington resident. "Charlotte is an old town, but it's a very young city." Published Monday, April 29, 2002 By JIM ROSS The Herald-Dispatch Real estate agents and the local politicians in Huntington have known for years that people are crossing the Ohio River to find new places to live. But even they are surprised when confronted with the numbers. Nearly 1,000 people have left Cabell and Wayne counties in the last five years to live in Lawrence County, Ohio, where new subdivisions along the river and open land on the back roads offer newer housing and more room, not to mention one of the best public school districts in Ohio.

"Maybe I'll move back (to West Virginia) when I'm older, but as long as I'm working, I can't see myself going back," she says. Published Monday, April 29, 2002 By BETH GORCZYCA The Herald-Dispatch Even the highways seem to know our young are leaving. Midway between Beckley and Bluefield, just north of the Interstate 64-77 split, a large green sign stretches across the West Virginia Turnpike. One half of the sign points east to Richmond, Va. The other half points south to Charlotte, N.C. It is a giant metal banner pointing the way out of state. And for many young West Virginians, it is a sign pointing to opportunities.
