An Elevation Profile Of Virginia
by James W. Fonseca and William Vaughan
This is a description of a project in which an elevation profile (topographic profile) of Virginia was constructed along a transect line from the Atlantic Ocean to the western edge of the state along the Kentucky border. We are detailing the steps in the construction of the profile to encourage geography students to create their own profiles. Then we will analyze the profile and discuss how it relates to Virginia's physical geography. This article was first published in the Virginia Geographer (Fall-Winter, 1991 issue).
Constructing the Profile
When the project was in its planning stage, the first consideration was where the topographic profile should be placed. The aim was to include as many well-known landmarks as possible while giving a reasonably accurate representation of the topography of the state. A line oriented roughly east-west was preferred as it would cut across the greatest variety of physiographic regions. It would also follow the natural shape of the state and correspond with the reader's inclination to view a profile oriented with east on the right. A more than suitable line was found that ran from Metompkin Island, off Accomack County on the east, to Appalachia, near Big Stone Gap in Wise County on the Kentucky border. The advantage of this line is that it intersects the cities of Richmond, Lynchburg, Bedford, Roanoke, Salem, and Norton and the towns of Appomattox and Blacksburg.

Can you imagine what that might do to commuter patterns and property values in the two cities? Transportation as we know it will change in the future, bringing some radical changes in the fortunes of some places, according to a new book co-authored by Paul Knox, Distinguished Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech and Sallie Marston, professor of geography at the Universeity of Arizona ( Places and Regions in Global Context , Prentice Hall in 1997). "The first generation of smart cars and trucks, with onboard microprocessor-based electronics, is already on the road," Knox says. High-speed rail systems are already in place in parts of Europe, and are expanding rapidly. Plans for a new Japanese "rocket plane" are on the drawing board. Over the long term, regions having access to the new modes of transportation will prosper, while those without access will be passed by.

Kennedy Instructor: J. D. Boyer Career Advisors: L. W. Carstensen; R. W. Morrill (231-6886) Geography is the science of place and space. Geographers examine the significance of where things are located on the surface of the earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with their environments. At Virginia Tech, students pursue courses in human geography (including social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions), physical geography (such as the study of landscapes and climate), and the preparation and interpretation of maps and images of the earth (using Geographic Information Systems). Students learn both qualitative and computer-based skills that are much in demand in the workplace. Geographers describe, analyze, interpret, and forecast human and biophysical patterns at local, regional, and global scales. Their frame of reference includes the past, present, and future. Geographers study why things are where they are, when and how they got there, and the processes and forces that shape these patterns. The bachelor's curriculum provides undergraduates with a sense of value of geography in liberal education, balanced with preparation for more advanced study and for careers that the discipline offers. While emphasis is placed upon the acquisition of a sound and flexible generalist degree, juniors and seniors are also encouraged to select an area of concentration such as urban, historical, medical, or physical geography and resource analysis, or GIS and remote sensing.

World Geography The focus of this course is the study of the world's peoples, places, and environments, with an emphasis on world regions. The knowledge, skills, and perspectives of the course are centered on the world's population and cultural characteristics, landforms and climates, economic development, and migration and settlement patterns. Spatial concepts of geography will be used as a framework for studying interactions between humans and their environments. Using geographic resources, students will employ inquiry, research, and technology skills to ask and answer geographic questions. Particular emphasis is placed on students' understanding and applying geographic concepts and skills to their daily lives. Geographic skills provide the necessary tools and technologies for thinking geographically. These skills help people make important decisions in their daily lives, such as how to get to work and where to shop, vacation, or go to school. They also help people make reasoned political decisions and aid in the development and presentation of effective, persuasive arguments for and against matters of public policy. All of these decisions involve the ability to acquire, arrange, and use geographic information. Maps, as well as graphs, sketches, diagrams, photographs, and satellite-produced images, are essential tools of geography. Geographic skills include

Criminal Geography of Fredericksburg, Virginia
By Kimberly Blizzard and Katie Henderson November 26, 2001 Violent crime in Fredericksburg, Virginia and its surrounding counties, Stafford and Spotsylvania, has decreased since its increase in the mid 1990s as a result of an increase in non-violent crimes, such as property crimes and drug abuse, and increase in population. Fredericksburg holds higher total crime status in the medium rate in comparison to its surrounding because of the higher density of population in the city. The population from the major cities, such as Washington, D.C., has sent a wave of migration from the city to the less populated areas in the lower counties, such as Stafford and Spotsylvania.
Criminal History of Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg, a city located to the south of Washington, D.C. and north of Virginiaís capital city, Richmond, has been said to hold the oldest history in the country. When explorerís came up the Rappahannock River in the late 1600s they strategically placed a port up river. A photograph of a port town similar to the strategic port of Fredericksburg.
