Teachers and Media Specialists MultiMedia Schools , January/February 1997 Let's work hard on finding ways for teachers and media specialists to combine their skills so the students benefit most. I am always amazed when I talk with teachers who are doing wonderful telecommunications projects with their students. These teachers are striking out on their own, fearless of the unknown, finding wonderful resources to use in science, math, language arts, and social studies. They are creative in using these resources. They are challenging their students to explore and learn, to inquire about the content, to digest and understand its significance. The kids gobble this up. Like all of us, they like to be involved. And, involved they are in their own learning! Classroom practitioners call this "discovery-based learning." More often than not, the library or media center is not mentioned in this spontaneous burst of energy from classroom teachers. Why do you suppose this is? Do teachers think of the library as simply "a place" where kids go to look something up? Or to do "homework"? Do teachers think of the media specialist as someone in charge of this place, rather than as a partner in the learning process? Do these enthusiastic and exemplary teachers understand that part of what they are doing, media specialists have been quietly doing for years. In libraryland, this is sometimes called "resource-based learning."
