Janet Curtis Canyon High School English 9 and English Language Development 9-12 Dear parents and guardians, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with your son/daughter this year. So far I have observed lots of creativity and enthusiasm in my classes. I enjoy working with these students, and I try to provide a positive learning environment so that every student has the opportunity to have a successful learning experience at Canyon HIgh School. My teaching philosophy is that students learn most in an environment of mutual respect, and I work diligently to ensure that every student who expends effort has the chance to be successful. Please let me know if there is a particular concern you have about your son/daughter. I care about the progress of each student, and I welcome your input. This time in a teenager's life is filled with change and challenges, and the combined support and encouragement of both teachers and parents can make a significant difference in their lives. How students are graded If a student is absent Homework Extra Credit ... Tips for academic success How are students graded? Students work cooperatively and non-competitively on most occasions. Much of a student's grade is based on effort extended. Everything a student does counts towards his grade. Daily participation points may be earned in a variety of ways: coming to class with required materials, paying attention when the teacher or another student is talking, reading silently or following in the book as the teacher reads and explains, watching a film, taking notes or completing follow-up exercises, copying material from the board, or staying on task as specified by the teacher. Sometimes part of the participation grade will be earned by the quality of the work; many times credit is earned by effort and/or completion of the work to the student's best ability. Students who violate classroom rules disrupt the learning process, and may forfeit participation points.

The Parents Guide to the Internet (November 1997) is intended to help parentsregardless of their level of technological know-howmake use of the on-line world as an important educational tool. The guide gives parents an introduction to the Internet and suggests how parents can allow their children to tap into the wonders of the Internet while safeguarding them from its potential hazards. The Spanish version of this publication, La Guía del Internet para Padres de Familia , is also available. Education Resources on the Internet Just for Preschoolers -When the web was first getting underway, there weren't very many online games and activities. And those for pre-readers were even more scarce. Now, thankfully, we have an abundance of sites geared toward preschoolers. A few of them can even be managed without much adult help. I've included some of the best in this WebTopic (be sure to also see our list of books, CD-ROM's, videos, and kits just for preschoolers). The Discovery Channel Ben's Guide to the U.S. Government for Kids -Hello kids! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Benjamin Franklin. I will be your guide throughout this site. You probably know me best as a Founding Father and from my "shocking" kite experiment. Alphabet Superhighway -The Alphabet Superhighway is a resource for teachers to find materials and ideas for teaching almost any part of the elementary or secondary curriculum; it is a place for students to browse for ideas and materials for reports and for in depth information on topics of interest, for classes to build exhibits on problem based projects, for challenges, and for fun. And it is a place where students can improve their writing and information representation skills through writing for the Cyberzine and building exhibits.

The Origin of Musical Notation > Page Study Guide About This Article When You Know the Notes to Sing, You Can Sing Most Anything
The first phrase of the hymn begins on c and each of the other phrases begins one scale degree higher than its predecessor. Guido discovered that using syllables to teach chants made it possible for his singers to learn new chants more quickly (although he probably didn't expect Julie Andrews to know that either.) Those seven syllables sound remarkably similar to the Italian pronunciation of the same words. The Italian language also factors into musical notation in other ways. The sound of music is the domain of tempo or the relative speed of a composition. The words to describe tempo are traditionally in Italian and number into the hundreds. When the practice of specifying a particular tempo evolved during the Renaissance, Italy was the center of musical learning. As many musicians came to study the state of the art practices, they carried those advanced practices back to their own countries. Centuries later, Italian remains the universal musical language for tempo and dynamics, among other things.

Dateline: 09/20/99 Have some letters been taken out of the alphabet?
Why do the letters have names?
Answering the question of which letters are in the Spanish alphabet isn't as straightforward as it may seem. Look in a dozen reference works and you very likely will get three or four different versions of the composition of the Spanish alphabet. Some list K and W in the alphabet; others say that those letters are only in foreign derived words (such as kilowatt ).. And others differ on the combinations such as ch and ll that would be interpreted as two letters in most languages. A recent letter led me to find the "official" answer to the question. Following is that letter and another one I've received recently about the alphabet, along with the responses.

Are you just supposed to sit down with a dictionary and plow through from A to Z? Aardvark, abacus, abalone.... Nope. In fact, that's a terrible idea. There's a much easier way. The Princeton Review has put together a book that is extremely helpful, not only for high school students taking the SAT but for grad school hopefuls taking the GRE. It's called Word Smart , and it's helpful for two very specific reasons. First, it teaches the definitions for words that show up most often on the SAT exam. The book's authors studied old SAT exams and assembled the most commonly used vocabulary terms. How's that for targeted? Second, Word Smart provides several sample sentences for each vocabulary word so you can see how the word is used in different contexts. That's key.
