Infrasound is detectable from many geophysical events
By Christine McGourty
BBC science correspondent in Denver Infrasound - low-frequency sound beyond the scope of the human ear - is providing scientists with a new way of detecting tornadoes, incoming asteroids and erupting volcanoes. Some [volcanoes] are operatic. Others have no singing talent whatsoever,
Milton Garces, University of Hawaii
The researchers working in the field reviewed their progress at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in Denver. They have been the beneficiaries of a £20m global infrasound network that was originally intended to help verify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. But atom bombs are not the only things the soon-to-be-completed 60 monitoring stations of the network will listen in on.

Report of the 18th Session of the Committee Brief description:
Virunga National Park (covering an area of 790,000 ha) comprises an outstanding diversity of habitats, ranging from swamps and steppes to the snowfields of Rwenzori at an altitude of over 5,000 m, and from lava plains to the savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. Mountain gorillas are found in the park, some 20,000 hippopotamuses live in the rivers and birds from Siberia spend the winter there. Threats to the Site:
Virunga National Park was inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger at the 18th Session of the World Heritage Committee (1994) in the wake of the war in neighbouring Rwanda and the subsequent massive influx of refugees from that country which led to massive deforestation and poaching at the site. Many members of the Park staff had not been remunerated for almost a year. Poaching of wildlife has continued and the staff lacks the means of patrolling the Park's 650 km long boundary. The human population in the fishing village near Lake Edward has increased several fold, posing a serious threat to the integrity of the Park. The fuel wood requirements of almost one million refugees camping inside the Park is estimated at 600 metric tons/day and is leading to widespread depletion of forests in the lowlands. Fortunately, the mountain gorilla whose habitat is at a higher altitude, have been spared so far.

... Shop or Compare Prices Photo courtesy USGS The 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens, in Washington state. Whenever there is a major volcanic eruption in the world, you'll see a slew of newspaper articles and nightly news stories covering the catastrophe, all stressing a familiar set of words violent, raging, awesome. When faced with a spewing volcano, people today share many of the same feelings volcano-observers have had throughout human history: We are in awe of the destructive power of nature, and we are unsettled by the thought that a peaceful mountain can suddenly become an unstoppable destructive force! While scientists have cleared up much of the mystery surrounding volcanoes, our knowledge has not made volcanoes any less amazing. In this edition of How Stuff Works , we'll take a look at the powerful, violent forces that create eruptions, and see how these eruptions build volcanic structures like islands. The next time a big eruption is in the news, you'll know exactly where that destructive power is coming from!

This is a compilation of published and unpublished geochemical data from multiple sources, organized in a standardized format. The data are available by clicking on the island or volcano of interest below. The text files were created on a Macintosh, so you may need to modify the carriage returns or line feeds to match your system. The files are saved as text with tab-separated-values (.tsv). You may need to specify this in the Preferences for your browser: MIME type is 'text', sub-type is 'tab-separated-value', extension is 'tsv'. Please verify these settings.
Notes:
  • The data in this compilation are from a variety of labs and were produced by a variety of analytical methods. Because not all sources reported standards data, cross-calibration of the data were not possible. Be aware that interlaboratory differences may exist and use caution when comparing data, especially elemental ratios, as analytical errors may be propagated.

http://www.arc.govt.nz/volcanic/
Welcome to our Volcanic Hazards web site. This site has been specially designed for school pupils studying the volcanoes of Auckland but should be of interest to everyone. As you work through the pages you will be taken on a journey, from the past and into the future of these fascinating structures of ours.
The site has been set up as part of the Auckland Regional Council’s GIS in Schools project - one of the Council's many community education programmes. It focuses on assisting pupils and teachers to start using Geographic Information Systems in the school curriculum. We look forward to you sending us your comments about the web site, as we intend to continue developing it further as an information resource on Natural Hazards and their potential impacts on the way we live in Auckland. I wish to acknowledge the assistance of all of those people and organisations who have made their information available to us as we set up 'The Volcanoes of Auckland'. Jo Brosnahan, Chief Executive.

Introduction Have you ever seen a volcano erupt? Do you know the location of any volcanoes? Do you know how to make a volcano? Join me for a fun volcanic experience!! The Task Can you answer the following questions?:
  • What is a volcano? When and how do they erupt? Where are the active and inactive volcanoes located? How do I build a model volcano?

Resources
The Process
  • Find a partner to work with. Print out or obtain a sheet of the questions from your teacher or print them from this page. Explore the sites under resources and search for the answers. When you have completed researching all 4 questions, pick one volcano and report to the class your findings. As a final project you and your partner will click on projects and choose one of the volcanoes to build.
  • Evaluation When you have completed all research, your report, and the final project, your peers will complete a rubric on your findings.
Conclusion Although volcanoes are commonly considered natural disasters, they are bearers of new life. It is important to understand that we may not be able to prevent volcanic eruptions, we can study and learn from them in order to detect any future eruptions.

Although none are erupting now, at least 3 did in the last few hundred years and numerous others have the potential to erupt in the near future. Other countries' volcanoes also can affect Canadians: eruptions in Alaska or along the west coast of the U.S.A. can impact agriculture and air travel across western Canada. Mt. Baker in particular has the potential to affect the Fraser Valley. In addition, large-magnitude eruptions anywhere in the world may affect our weather. A vast area of primary tropical forest dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega, the park has a diverse and abundant fauna. One of the last groups of mountain gorillas (consisting of only some 250 individuals) lives at between 2,100 and 2,400 m above sea-level. Threats to the Site:
Grave concern that portions of the park had been deforested and that hunting had been reported there, as well as war and civil strife ravaging the country, led the World Heritage Committee to inscribe the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger The site has been much affected by the influx of refugees. Park facilities had been looted and destroyed, and most of the park staff have fled the area. The park may also be serving as a hideout for large militia groups, as well as for illegal settlers. This has led to fires, increased poaching and the illegal removal and burning of timber. IUCN has received several pleas from the staff of the Park for international aid to rebuild both park-infrastructure and staff morale. State of Conservation Reports: Natural site datasheet from WCMC
