Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Former coach Ann Koger founded the Haverford College volleyball program in 1980-81 when she pulled together the first-ever Fords volleyball squad with only one class of women to draw upon. Koger, a former star herself at Morgan State (Md.), remained the sole head coach of the volleyball team for 17 years, with one season off to finish her doctorate in education. The team soon gained respectability with Tamra Siegel '86 emerging as Haverford's first real volleyball ace. The Fords achieved an initial playoff berth in their Middle Atlantic Conference days and now hope to repeat that feat as the Centennial Conference has added playoffs. Alisa Bieber '97 helped the team make the transition to Centennial membership. Koger stepped down as volleyball head coach after the 1996 season to focus on her other duties as an athletic administrator and women's tennis head coach at Haverford. Under Jim Haney, Haverford improved each year by defeating several scholarship opponents and challenging many regionally and nationally ranked teams. In 1999 the Fords enjoyed their first winning season in a decade, then they exploded to a 30-6 mark in 2000 and a share of their first-ever regular season Centennial Conference title with an 8-2 record (21-12 overall) in 2001. The Fords hope to continue their rapid improvement and join the Division III elite in coming seasons.

No. 22 Recruiting Class Highest In OU Volleyball History OU class ranked fourth best in the Big 12. Feb. 12, 2003 NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball program received some good news by way of Student Sports Magazine, which ranked its incoming 2003 recruiting class as No. 22 in the country and fourth best in the Big 12. OU has signed three prep athletes and may sign three more spikers on April 16, which is the second national volleyball signing day. Leading the 2003 recruiting class is Laura Tomes, a 6-2 middle blocker/outside hitter from Sioux City, Iowa. Tomes was ranked as the 37th best prospect in the country by Student Sports Magazine and was also recruited by perennial powerhouses Nebraska, Long Beach State and Texas. Tomes is also the two-time defending state champion in high jump for Sioux City East High School. Tomes plays club volleyball for Nebraska Elite. "We are very excited about Laura committing to OU," said Mahi. "Anytime you steal a recruit away from schools like Nebraska and Long Beach State it is a major accomplishment. She is very fast, has outstanding leaping ability, is a hard worker and a tremendous all-around athlete. She will be ready to produce in the Big 12 immediately upon her arrival in Norman."

04/08/2002 - Updated 06:20 PM ET Museum documents volleyball history By Adam Gorlick, The Associated Press Nancy Palmieri, AP The Volleyball Hall of Fame houses an extensive history, trophies and uniforms from the sport. Now sharing space with a popular children's museum, the shrine boasts an extensive history, trophies and uniforms from the sport invented in this western Massachusetts city for out-of-shape men who thought basketball was too violent. The 44 names inducted into the Hall of Fame may be unfamiliar to the average American sports fan, but a chat with curator Ruth McCormick and a glance at some of the photos featured in the gallery turn up some more well-known personalities. Take actor Tom Selleck, for instance. The "Magnum P.I." star took up volleyball in Hawaii to kill time during an actors' strike that broke out just before he started filming the television show. He went on to be the honorary captain of the men's 1984 Olympic volleyball team. A huge photo reproduction of the ball he signed with the team members hangs in the Hall of Fame, just beyond a half sized volleyball court. The actual ball is archived in another building, along with about 100 other balls from historic matches and bearing important signatures.

... Wrestling Bruins Help Make Pro Beach Volleyball History Four former UCLA players earn gold on the same day. July 29, 2002 Los Angeles - For the first time in the history of U.S. professional beach volleyball, both a men's and women's team obtained gold on the same day at two different sites. Even more impressive is the fact that all four players are former UCLA standouts. On Sunday, former Bruin stars Holly McPeak (1990) and Elaine Youngs (1988-89, 1991-92), won the Greek Open in Rhodes, Greece. The duo defeated Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst 21-17 and 21-16. Also on Sunday, former UCLA players Stein Metzger (1993-96) and Kevin Wong (1992-95) achieved gold at the Portugal Open in Espinho, Portugal. Metzger and Wong defeated Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran 17-21, 24-22, 15-12, making for a big day in U.S. pro beach volleyball history. With her win on Sunday, McPeak stands with 63 career victories, just four behind the all-time leader Karolyn Kirby. Dec. 18, 2002 SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's volleyball standout Becky Potter made program history Wednesday morning as she was named AVCA Second Team All-America at a news conference in New Orleans, La. She becomes the first Bronco Volleyball player to earn All-American status after becoming only the second player in program history to earn All-Pacific Region honors last week. "When I heard about it I just started shaking," said Potter, who heard the news from Jon Wallace while she was at her parents' home in Clovis, Calif. "Becky has not only raised her play to a higher level, but this program as well," said Wallace. "She is not only a remarkable competitor, but a remarkable person as well. She embodies everything that we look for in student-athletes. No one is more deserving of all the accolades she is receiving." Potter, who came to the Mission Campus from Buchanan H.S., is re-writing much of the record books in the Bronco Volleyball media guide. This year alone she set new single-season mark in total kills (571) and kills per game (5.34), as well as setting a new record for kills in a three-game match with her 27 against Portland.

Volleyball was originally invented as a game called 'Mintonette' in 1895 by William G Morgan. He was the director of physical training at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusets. He wanted to try to introduce a non contact sport (unlike basketball). The number of players per side was fixed as 6 in 1918. It's first appearance at a multi sport event was at the 1913 Far Eastern Games in Manilla, Phillipines. The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was formed in 1947 and the first World Championships were held on an outdoor tennis court in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1949.
