At the Helen Woodward Animal Center, people help animals and animals help people. The Center serves the community by teaching and practicing humane behavior toward man and all living things. Our lives are more precious when trust, unconditional love, respect and care exist as the primary bond between animals and one another. Find out how to become a volunteer.
Eagle Scouts Volunteer Time at HWAC!
Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent and able to work with concrete! Eagle Scouts Troop #766 of Rancho Santa Fe answered the call of the Helen Woodward Animal Center recently when they spent several weekends building and installing our 3 new "poop stations". The project began off-site where the scouts built and painted large, wooden boxes that would cover the trash receptacles and posts that would hold a box of bags and the "pooper scoopers". Once that phase of the project was complete they dug the holes and anchored each post in a concrete base. Each of the 3 stations now includes a supply of plastic bags (courtesy of our new "bag lady"....Volunteer Supervisor Amy Bennett) because...as the scouts remind us at all times..."Be prepared".
How to become a Volunteer at HWAC
Volunteer FAQs For adults and juniors over 14 years of age, your first step is to find out about the Center on a volunteer orientation and tour. This is a good way to learn about our volunteer programs, and the commitment involved in each area. This orientation takes about three hours. Orientations are held periodically throughout the year.

MIGRANT AID ADULT TUTORING
NOTE: Because Migrant Aid is such a short but intense program, weekly attendance is MANDATORY! If you anticipate missing even one session, please seek volunteer opportunities elsewhere to allow other to volunteer. MISSION STATEMENT The Migrant Aid Program is designed to teach migrant workers and their children the necessary, basic linguistic skills to function in the United States. English as a Second Language (ESL) training is the main focus of the Adult Tutoring program. The students receive help in learning the English language through ESL instructional material. The migrant workers and their families also receive the knowledge vital to living in the United States, while participating in an enriching cultural exchange with volunteers. It is a wonderful opportunity for greater cultural understanding and outreach. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Four nights per week, a group of several volunteers visit the Covesville, Spring Valley, and Jarman Gap camps. The workers who are interested in taking lessons gather together in groups with one or two volunteers; tutoring usually proceeds on a 1-1 or 2-1 ratio. Because the migrant workers are only here for the short harvesting season, time is very limited. This is a short, intensive program where students are tutored using English as a Second Language materials and dictionaries provided by the Virginia Migrant Education offices of Albemarle County. Each volunteer’s time commitment is three hours per week.

These three unlikely partners are the key players in the drama Floods of Compassion, which has a supporting cast of hundreds of extras whom God called to take the stage. Mitch visited Honduras in 1998, devastating the country with torrential rains, monstrous mud slides, and raging floodwaters. Then compassionate Nazarenes and Chiquita banana entered stage right. This narrative begins with tragedy, suspense, and pathos. But when the curtain comes down, the story brims with good will, grace, and hope. ORDER HERE I mpact!
