medicine, and the deep satisfaction and personal rewards of service
by Arlene Bouras "I’m looking at alternatives for doing something different with the remainder of my life in medicine,” says William Colaiace, M.D. Although he still has a child in graduate school, Dr. Colaiace is already beginning to make plans: After more than 35 years in radiology, he expects to retrain as a general practitioner, mainly so he’ll have more opportunities to volunteer his services when the time comes.
Dr. Colaiace was among 150 members of the health care professions who, along with clergymen and educators, attended a remarkable four-day conference in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The meeting was titled The Art and the Calling, and its purpose was to consider the interaction of ethics, the arts, and medicine. Many attendees were returning for a third year and knew what they were in for, which explains the air of camaraderie and anticipation that I felt as I took my seat for the opening remarks.
