As a non-profit institution, The Maritime Aquarium relies on the support of its dedicated volunteers. Most of our dozens of active volunteers work at Aquarium exhibits, interpreting displays and acting as the smiling face of The Maritime Aquarium to visitors. You'll find volunteers at the seal pool, Touch Tank, Ray Touch Pool, Open Ocean exhibit and Boat Shop. Look for them in their green shirts. Other volunteers work "behind-the-scenes," doing office work, helping with sleep-overs and other special events, and more.

Volunteers play a vital role in sustaining the treasure that is Washington state parks, providing more than 200,000 hours of service each year (the equivalent of 100 full-time employees). Helping hands are needed everywhere for a wide variety of short- and long-term projects, providing interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, couples, schools, families, corporations, citizen groups and service organizations. Read on to learn about specific volunteer opportunities, benefits, and who our outstanding volunteers for last year. To receive an application packet or other volunteer information, contact Sarah Oldfield at (360) 902-8583 or email your request to volunteers@parks.wa.gov . Remember to include your mailing address.
Volunteer Opportunities Host Programs
Volunteer hosts help park staff with routine visitor services such as greeting guests, answering questions, and dispensing information in exchange for free camping or boat moorage. (See "Volunteer Benefits" below.) Hosts are used in campgrounds, marine parks, interpretive centers and programs and Environmental Learning Centers. Annual Events
Extra hands are always needed at once-a-year maintenance events. Many parks celebrate Earth Day in April with cleanups and one-day projects. National Trails Day, the first Saturday in June, offers a chance to help with restoring and improving State Parks trails. All coastal parks take part in Operation Shore Patrol, an annual beach cleanup, the third weekend in September.

Volunteers at Golden Gate National Recreation Area help present the diverse resources of one of America's most popular National Parks to today's visitors, and help preserve these precious resource for future generations. Volunteers at Golden Gate play a vital role in almost all aspects of park operations:
  • Collecting data on birds of prey at the premier hawk watching site on the west coast. Designing and conducting information programs for the general public and school children. Removing non-native plants, growing native plants, and working in one of the park's nurseries. Restoring historic structures such as a World War II barracks or a mess hall. Working with park scientists to protect endangered species like the mission blue butterfly and peregrine falcon.
Volunteer opportunities at Golden Gate NRA are as diverse as the natural and cultural resources of the park. History buffs, amateur naturalists, artists, students, gardeners and many more people have found a place to share their skills at Golden Gate. Each volunteer's contribution makes a big difference! Tutor 1-3 limited English-speaking adults 1-2 times (3-10 hours) per week. Help students with basic English or prepararation for their INS interview by focusing on personal questions, history/civics questions, reading/writing or addressing problem areas in their English that need attention. Volunteers perform tasks to include data entry, filing, working with crime analysis and RSVP, as well as other duties that fit the individual volunteer and/or Department needs. INTERN PROGRAM
The Mount Vernon Police Department Intern Program is a partnership between the Police Department and Skagit Valley College. Intern duties and responsibilities vary from student to student, and may include clerical and other specified areas of need. Students are required to work 15 to 20 hours a week to satisfy the internship requirements. For additional information, call (360) 336-6224.
