Product Reviews: COMMAND PERFORMANCE EMOTION RECOLLECTED IN TRANQUILITY All the world's great arrangers-most of whom got to work with Frank Sinatra (the rest wish they had)-are (or were) American. With one exception: Canadian-born Robert Farnon. At last report, Bob was still alive and well, and living at "La Falaise" on the Channel Island of Guernsey (a letter with only that address can reach him). Now 85, he still makes the occasional foray into London to do what he's always done best. Andre Previn, told the late, great lyricist Johnny Mercer that "Robert Farnon is the greatest living string arranger in the world." The great ones who admit to Farnon's influence have included Nelson Riddle, Don Costa, Quincy Jones, Neil Hefti, Torrie Zito and Johnny Mandel (just to name the best who worked with Frank Sinatra), plus, (among those who didn't, but wished they had) Henry Mancini, Roger Kellaway, and John ("Star Wars") Williams.

Britton J. Harwood Piers Plowman and the Problem of Belief (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1994). xii, 237. $14.00, $US 24.00, paper. The author, professor of English at Miami University, has published extensively on Middle English literature and critical theory. In this study, he considers Piers Plowman On this basis Professor Harwood suggests that Piers Plowman is the first Middle English poem to have been motivated by the deterioration in theological and philosophical foundations experienced by the fourteenth-century writer, as argued by Charles Muscatine and Anne Middleton. This is the first book on Piers Plowman to take the narrator seriously when he rejects moral instruction as a substitute for the knowledge of God, and to argue that the poem is authentically exploratory. Carolyne Larrington Women and Writing in Mediaeval Europe: A Sourcebook (New York: Routledge, 1995). xiv, 277. $12.95, $US 17.95, paper. This is a unique collection of writings by and about mediaeval women. The impressive selection of primary source material made by the author, who lectures in mediaeval English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, goes beyond existing stereotypes to raise vital questions of representation and autobiography. The range of material extends from Iceland to Byzantium, and spans one thousand years. The selections include literary, historical, theological, and other types of narrative and imaginative writing. The pieces explore the themes central to mediaeval women's lives and their relationship to cultural and social institutions.

From Queen Anne to the Napoleonic Wars Queen Anne, sister of Mary of Orange and another daughter of James II, ruled from 1702 until her own death in 1714. The last of the Stuarts, Anne marked her reign with the most significant event, the 1707 Act of Union with Scotland. She outlived all her children, leaving her throne without an heir. Upon the death of Anne, England looked for a Protestant prince to succeed her, and chose George of Hanover who reigned from 1714-1727. Chosen because he was the great-grandson of James I, the king spoke only German and spent as little time in England as possible. Beginning with this "distant cousin" to the throne, the reign of George I marked the beginning of the 174-year rule of the Hanoverians who preceded Victoria. George I left the running of the government to the English politicians and created the office of Prime Minister. Under the Hanoverians, the powers of Parliament were extended, and the constitutional monarchy developed into what it is today.

Richard III, Crookback
Plantagenet, Yorkist Line Reigned: 1483-1485 Richard III, the eleventh child of Richard, Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, was born in 1452. He was created third Duke of Gloucester at the coronation of his brother, Edward IV. Richard had three children: one each of an illegitimate son and daughter, and one son by his first wife, Anne Neville, widow of Henry IV's son Edward. Richard's reign gained an importance out of proportion to its length. He was the last of the Plantagenet dynasty, which had ruled England since 1154; he was the last English king to die on the battlefield; his death in 1485 is generally accepted between the medieval and modern ages in England; and he is credited with the responsibility for several murders: Henry VI, Henry's son Edward, his brother Clarence, and his nephews Edward and Richard. Richard's power was immense, and upon the death of Edward IV, he positioned himself to seize the throne from the young Edward V. He feared a continuance of internal feuding should Edward V, under the influence of his mother's Woodville relatives, remain on the throne (most of this feared conflict would have undoubtedly come from Richard). The old nobility, also fearful of a strengthened Woodville clan, assembled and declared the succession of Edward V as illegal, due to weak evidence suggesting that Edward IV's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was bigamous, thereby rendering his sons illegitimate and ineligible as heirs to the crown. Edward V and his younger brother, Richard of York, were imprisoned in the Tower of London, never to again emerge alive. Richard of Gloucester was crowned Richard III on July 6, 1483.

The Late Middle Ages
The Wars of the Roses 1453 - 85 The Wars of the Roses were a contest between two branches of the Plantagenet royal family. Henry VI was the great-grandson of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and Edward III's third son; his rival, Richard, Duke of York, was the grandson of Edward's fourth son Edmund. However, Richard's mother Anne Mortimer was great-granddaughter to Edward's second son, Lionel, Duke of Clarence; in this respect Richard's claim to the throne was stronger than Henry VI's own. That said, Henry VI's claim to the throne was only disputed in 1460, five years after the first battle between Yorkists and Lancastrians. Henry VI acceded as a child and was frequently paralysed by depression; even as a functioning adult he was unworldly and weak-willed. The resulting power vacuum was filled by avaricious noblemen, to the detriment of government and the royal finances. Outside the court, noblemen built up private armies; a 'bastard feudalism' developed, in which service to one baron was the only protection against the others. These conditions both caused and permitted Richard of York's quarrel with Henry. Had Henry VI been competent, the Yorkist claim to the throne might never have been advanced - let alone that of Henry Tudor, the distant relation who eventually prevailed.

Guide Picks - Top 10 Military History Books It sometimes seems that Britain has always been involved in some conflict or another, so British history and Military history are inevitably interlinked. It is also one of the most fascinating subjects to study. As a result, there have always been many books written on Britain at war. The major conflicts will be dealt with separately, but here are the top ten general military related British history books. The Oxford Companion to Military History by Richard Holmes
This book tells you everything you ever wanted to know about military history in an easily accessible A-Z format. It deals with major battles, weapons, technology, people, places, and causes from classical wars to modern day conflicts, and includes a range of maps and illustrations. It is a big book, and not exactly a riveting read from cover to cover, but as a reference book, it is invaluable.
