General Resources Earth's Water
Earth is the "watery planet". Viewed from space it is predominantly blue, as 74 % of its surface is covered by water. Oceans contain 97 % of the earth's water while the remaining 3 % is classified as freshwater. Seventy-seven percent of this surface freshwater is stored as ice and 22% as groundwater and soil moisture. The remaining freshwater, making up less than 1 % of the world total, is contained in lakes, rivers and wetlands.
Q and Answers About Water

We've put together a list of questions and answers about water that hopefully you will find interesting and amusing. Things like, "Is salt water used for anything in the U.S.?," and, "How can we have a 100-year flood two years in a row?"
Freshwater Ecology

Ecology is the study of plants, animals and their environments and how all of these affect each other. Glossary of Water Related Terms Use this glossary to look up words found on the Yarra Valley Water World Wide Web Site. The Water Cycle The Water Cycle You may be familiar with how water is always cycling around, through, and above the Earth, continually changing from liquid water to water vapor to ice. One way to envision the water cycle is to follow a drip of water around as it moves on its way. I could really begin this story anywhere along the cycle, but I think the ocean is the best place to start, since that is where most of Earth's water is.

Welcome
Did you know that there's no such thing as NEW water? That's right! Every drop of water that has ever been on this planet has been recycled from day one! In fact, you could be drinking the same water that dinosaurs drank millions of years ago! But the water YOU are drinking has been recycled and purified. Water is such an important natural resource that takes everyone's part to preserve, cleanse, and protect it so that we will have clean water now and forever. How important is it? VERY! No human, animal, insect, nor plant can survive without it! We invite you to become an active participant in the continuous and conscious fight for clean, safe waters in Indiana and around the globe. Water Pollution In Depth Report
Stormwater Strategies
Community Responses to Runoff Pollution
This May 1999 report from the Natural Resources Defense Council documents some of the most effective strategies being employed by communities around the country to control urban runoff pollution, which is among the top sources of water contamination in the country today. The collection of 100 case studies compiled and evaluated here is intended to serve as a guide for local decisionmakers, municipal officials, and environmental activists; it is also a resource for citizens concerned about the quality of their local environment. Added in October 2001 is a new chapter on low-impact development, which has emerged as a simple, effective and economical stormwater strategy that also carries a broader aesthetic appeal. For printed copies of the original report, or a CD ROM that includes color photographs and the new chapter on low-impact development, see our Publications List

NITRATE POLLUTION OF WATER BY AGRICULTURE
Stay informed - Sign up for our email alert service Nitrate levels in many English waters, both ground and surface waters, are increasing. Nitrate pollution is of concern because it has to be removed before water can be supplied to consumers, and it can harm the water environment. Over 70% of nitrate enters water from agricultural land. The following pages provide details of action to reduce agricultural nitrate pollution, which is one aspect of the broader problem of diffuse pollution from agriculture. We are also taking action to reduce similar pollution from other sources. For example, the Urban Waste Water Treatment Regulations 1994 aim to reduce pollution, including nitrate pollution, from sewage treatment works and industry.

Swarms Of Tiny Robots To Monitor Water Pollution The University of Southern California School of Engineering has received a $1.5 million research grant from the National Science Foundation to create swarms of microscopic robots to monitor potentially dangerous microorganisms in the ocean. "With increasing urban runoff, sewage spills and blooms of harmful algae off heavily populated coastal areas, it is very important to be able to sense, and then identify, particular ocean microorganisms quickly," said Ari Requicha, a USC professor of computer science and the project's principal investigator. "The quicker we learn that a pathogen is present in the water, the sooner we can warn people and begin action to correct the situation." The project spans the fields of nanotechnology, robotics, computer science and marine biology, but is centered on the development of the ultra-small robotic sensors and software systems to control them. Requicha directs the USC School of Engineering's Laboratory for Molecular Robotics where his team has been experimenting with nanometer-scale structures for nearly seven years. (One nanometer is one/one-billionth of a meter. A nanometer is to a meter what a small grape is to the entire Earth.)

Water Pollution (Overview) Water Pollution (General) Water Pollution in Hong Kong Endangered Species ... Bibliography Dickson Kent Chad Eri The web page is made by Dickson and Chad. Articles are by Kent and Eri. News Flash: (April 20th, 2002) Hello everyone! I'm back to reconstruct the web page! Yeah! This site has been up for 2 years! And it's so popular! Please come here frequently around June, where my summer holiday starts. I'm going to put a flash intro very soon!
I'm already a High School student! It's hard to have time to fix my site. Yes! It's almost done! Oh yeah. By the way. I don't know why the site loads so slow... dunno why. This is a project done by some 7th graders in Hong Kong, attending Hong Kong International School. This is a project we are giving to the world, because it is a subject that concerns all of us around the world. This is not only for our water pollution project, but for the world to know about. We have put this project together, to help animals, and the next generation, to have a better world. It is up to us students of this generation to look toward. This is a matter that has been going on for years. Why do people say, "A better environment starts at home, but no one is cooperating to help this matter." So as you go through our project we hope you will reflect and do things to help this world, to become a better environment.
