The department has several divisions and programs that deal with water issues. The Missouri Forest Products Association (MFPA) has initiated a hotline for citizens who have observed possible improper timber harvesting practices, according to Cory Ridenhour, MFPA executive director. The purpose of the Forestry Inconsistent Practices Program hotline - (573) 681-9358 - is to give people the opportunity to report suspected cases of timber harvesting that do not follow the association's best management practices, Ridenhour said.

to address How does water pollution affect people and animals? Whatare some major causes of water pollution? Are you suprised
http://www.lfelem.lfc.edu/tech/DuBose/webquest/Toni/OCEANIC.HTM
Splish Splash! Splish Splash you were taking a bath... Uh-Oh! Where's the water? You live in a small town on the coast of sunny California and there is a serious problem. You have no more running water. You call the water plant and the news is not good. Due to high bacteria levels in the water supply, the Pacific Ocean, the plant had to temporarily shut down. You now begin to think about all the damage that has probably been done to this huge body of water to cause such a predicament. Even though you just missed a shower, you wonder about the thousands of species of life that actually have to live in that dirty mess! You decide that something must be done. But what? In this three day activity, you are going to make a difference! The Task You find a neighbor who was equally suprised this morning about the town's running water problem. In this case, your neighbor is a partner from this class. You two decide to start your own organization. Your goal is to educate others on why we need to protect the ocean and how we can do it. You also need to choose one marine animal as a mascot for your organization. The first step you must take is to incorporate these ideas into a brochure within the next two days. You will research specific sites on the intenet. The information that you pull from the sites should be compiled into a four page brochure (the four sides of a folded piece of paper). Remember, you are trying to help people help the world!

Wastewater Pollution in China by Kris Min ABSTRACT Wastewater pollution has always been a major problem throughout the world. The lack of suitable water used for drinking, agriculture, farming, etc. has declined through the years. With a shortage of water throughout the world, proper methods of treating and recycling water is the key goal in sustaining our limited water resource supply. Geographically speaking, the wastewater pollution within China has affected the environment, society, and agriculture. The water pollution crisis in China has brought up an issue of efficient wastewater treatment methods to help alleviate their problems. Throughout this paper, we will discuss the topics on the effects of wastewater pollution towards the environment and the society (health factors, agriculture, economic impacts, etc). At the same time, proposals for wastewater treatment procedures and facilities to help the water crisis in China will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The lack of clean water has always been an issue of environmental concern all over the world. This environmental issue is mainly stressed in developing countries today. The main sources of water pollution are: industrial (chemical, organic, and thermal wastes), municipal (largely sewage consisting of human wastes, other organic wastes, and detergents), and agricultural (animal wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers) (Brower et.al, 1990). For the past several years, China has been affected with the water pollution crisis. Three examples of wastewater pollution crisis in China are the City of Tianjin, the Chao Lakes and Xian City.

OVERVIEW Water pollution degrades surface waters making them unsafe for drinking, fishing, swimming, and other activities. As authorized by the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States. Point sources are discrete conveyances such as pipes or man-made ditches. Individual homes that are connected to a municipal system, use a septic system, or do not have a surface discharge do not need an NPDES permit; however, industrial, municipal, and other facilities must obtain permits if their discharges go directly to surface waters. In most cases, the NPDES permit program is administered by authorized states . Since its introduction in 1972, the NPDES permit program is responsible for significant improvements to our Nation's water quality.

Water Pollution and the Sierra Club's
Water Quality Protection Campaign
Clean water is a basic right and a necessity for all life. It keeps people healthy, supports fish and wildlife, and provides recreational opportunities. Despite progress made in the last 30 years to restore the health of our nation's waters by passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, 218 million Americans live within ten miles of polluted water, and 40% of the nation's assessed waters are still unsafe for fishing, swimming, or supporting aquatic life. Hot Issues - Act Now
  • The Bush Administration is in the process of removing federal protection from so called "isolated" streams, ponds, and wetlands. This leaves these waters more vulnerable to being filled and polluted. Plus, it places a greater burden on states and local communities to clean up water pollution that escapes federal regulation.

Website offers beach water pollution information
7/3/2002 9:51 AM
By: News 14 Carolina Web Staff
Oceana and Earth 911 offer information on how to protect coastal waters and which beach waters are clean. Both of their websites, Oceana.org and Earth911.org post weekly Internet updates of pollution levels in waters off every coastal North Carolina county. Jackie Savitz, director of an anti-pollution campaign organized by Oceana, said the information is tied to fecal coliform bacteria levels detected by state inspectors. If the bacteria is found in the water, this means the waters have been polluted by human or animal waste. This waste can make people sick. Officials expect to use another method for testing enterococcus bacteria by the end of the summer. Federal officials feel this new test is more effective in telling about waste levels in the water. North Carolina doesn't close its beach waters if unhealthy bacteria levels are found but the state will post warnings for swimmers.
