The Space Weather Environment
Particle populations and processes in the near-Earth space environment studied by TWINS can lead to damage of human systems, including
    • Radiation damage to and possible loss of satellites
    • Power outages at high latitudes
    • Pipeline corrosion
    • Radiation hazards to astronauts
By providing the first 3-D synoptic views of this critical region, TWINS will improve our understanding of and ability to forecast conditions in space which ultimately can be hazardous to humans and human systems.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) News
Weather Environment Simulation Technology (WEST) renders real time views of weather phenomena
Principal Investigator Bruce C. Montag, a manager in the SwRI Aerospace Electronics and Training Systems Division, and the other R&D 100 winners will be honored at the 34th Annual R&D 100 Awards Ceremony October 14 in Philadelphia. "WEST improves military training systems, flight simulators, and television broadcast weather graphics in several ways," says Montag. "It provides real-time, 30-frames-per-second video imagery, renders a viewpoint-independent flight path so that any viewing situation is possible, and creates photo-realistic views of hurricanes, windshear, and other weather phenomena." For example:
  • WEST could significantly improve military training systems, allowing flight crews to retain operational readiness. WEST can also enable mission rehearsal simulators to provide a more complete view of missions, allowing military commanders to exploit area weather conditions to their advantage. WEST simulation improvements can provide better simulation training to commercial airline pilots, preparing them for difficult weather situations and unforeseen circumstances such as windshear.

Funfunfun little Dune buggy! Front wheels have independent suspension (Why didn't they do this on the jeeps, like the VAMP s and Stinger ?!). Has one cannon (does not shoot!). Adding to the realism and fun is the engine. Yes, the engine is fun. Why you ask? Well, you can pop open the hood in the back, and have the Joes "fix" it. It's the small things like this that made the earlier vehicles better than the later series. The color of it is perfect. Would have been cool if they released a variant brown color, ala the Vamp II . Believe it or not, there is a military dune buggy that color, and it is tres cool. Holds four figures, came with Crankcase figure.
I finally got one of these in a big collection I bought not too long ago. Frankly I don't see the appeal. It's a thin skinned and very small little dune buggy. It holds four with two on the runner boards but I can't really see anyone riding on them for an extended period of time. It has one small little cannon and that's it for offensive capabilities! It'd be good teamed with Recon sleds for recon missions and little else. Besides the drivers have no protection what-so-ever. It's also a royal pain to get the figures in and out without tyring to turn them into contortionists. It's a neat little thing, but I wouldn't consider it an asset.

SEVERE WEATHER ENVIRONMENT
METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY
Here are some conditions favorable to severe weather and an explanation of each
DRY AIR IN THE MID-LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE:
1) Produces convective instability
2) Produces a large negative buoyancy in association with thunderstorm downdrafts. The dry air entrains into the moist air of the cloud causing intense evaporation, negative buoyancy, and a strong downdraft.
3) Evaporational cooling reduces the amount of melting hail experiences as it falls.
HIGH INSTABILITY: High CAPE, Low LI; Strength of updraft is determined by amount of positive buoyancy in the atmosphere. Large instability produces large updrafts. A main determinate of hail size is the strength of the updraft. High CAPE also causes the stretching necessary to produce tornadogenesis (wind shear must also be present).
PBL WIND SHEAR: Speed shear (wind speed increasing with height in the PBL); directional shear (wind veering, turning clockwise more than 45 degrees in the PBL); Average PBL wind greater than 20 knots (It has been found that for tornadoes to develop the PBL inflow needs to be greater than 20 knots, the higher the better)
STRONG UPPER LEVEL WINDS: Causes tilting of storms, displaces updraft from downdraft; Creates a vacuum affect at the top of storms; helps sustains the intensity and verticality of the updraft.
