Please use the submission form to suggest any sites that you would recommend for inclusion. Blatant advertising of your products or services is not acceptable nor will we consider anything that is not directly related to Web design.
It is also pointless submitting links to Web design services - the readers of WPDFD are your competitors, not potential clients. There are however, sections for designer's own sites and personal portfolios of a very high standard.

use it.com Alertbox May. 1996 Top Ten Design Mistakes Search Jakob Nielsen 's Alertbox for May 1996:
Top Ten Mistakes in Web Design
1. Using Frames
Splitting a page into frames is very confusing for users since frames break the fundamental user model of the web page . All of a sudden, you cannot bookmark the current page and return to it (the bookmark points to another version of the frameset), URLs stop working, and printouts become difficult. Even worse, the predictability of user actions goes out the door: who knows what information will appear where when you click on a link?
2. Gratuitous Use of Bleeding-Edge Technology
Don't try to attract users to your site by bragging about use of the latest web technology. You may attract a few nerds, but mainstream users will care more about useful content and your ability to offer good customer service. Using the latest and greatest before it is even out of beta is a sure way to discourage users: if their system crashes while visiting your site, you can bet that many of them will not be back. Unless you are in the business of selling Internet products or services, it is better to wait until some experience has been gained with respect to the appropriate ways of using new techniques. When desktop publishing was young, people put twenty fonts in their documents: let's avoid similar design bloat on the Web. As an example: Use VRML if you actually have information that maps naturally onto a three-dimensional space (e.g., architectural design, shoot-them-up games, surgery planning). Don't use VRML if your data is N-dimensional since it is usually better to produce 2-dimensional overviews that fit with the actual display and input hardware available to the user.

If you've spent much time exploring the Web, you've almost certainly encountered some badly designed Web sites. Since almost anyone can create Web pages, it's not surprising that many sites are confusing, overwhelming, ugly, or incredibly slo-o-o-ow. Tantalizing content can be hidden forever from the world when a site is poorly designed.
While it's not easy to create a well-designed site, following a few rules can help. These are not rigid commandments, but rather suggestions to assist you in the process of creating a site. If you're not a designer but have been put in charge of creating a site, there's still plenty you can learn to facilitate its design. And even if you aren't yet involved in creating a site, knowing something about Web design can help you to appreciate well-done sites. If you are a designer, you'll be glad to know that the same rules of design apply to the Web as to printor any other medium. Designing for the Web simply opens up a whole new range of possibilities. At the same time, though, Web technology imposes its own set of design limitationsin many ways more confusing than print.

20. Print Design Vs. Web Design (Alertbox Jan. 1999)
Anything that is a great print design is likely to be a lousy web design. The big canvas size and controlled layout make print visually superior; Web interaction is more engaging. Differences Between Print Design and web design. It is an astounding experience to walk the halls at the annual meeting

use it.com Alertbox Jan. 1999 Print vs. Web design Jakob Nielsen 's Alertbox, January 24, 1999:
Differences Between Print Design and Web Design
It is an astounding experience to walk the halls at the annual meeting of the Society for News Design (SND): every wall is covered with full-pages spreads from the best-designed newspapers around the world. The book reprinting the award-winning pages is a great design resource, but the physical presence of the full-size newsprint was utterly overwhelming. Newspaper designers have a huge canvas to play with. Their designs can be striking and yet intricate and pack much more impact than a web page; especially because the entire double-page spread is in-your-face in a fraction of a second. Wham, here's the news. The page in the figure is a great example of the possibilities in print: a large, high-resolution map sets the stage for a story about Chile and does double duty as an information graphic for several data nuggets. More data is visualized in smaller graphics around the page. And, of course, there is room for a large amount of text that is set in high-resolution type and nicely integrated with the headlines and graphics in a pleasing over-all layout that allows the eye to move from overview to details in a fraction of a second.
Gold medal: (Spanish newspaper) The above image does not do justice to the awards book which is printed in super-high resolution on heavy-duty glossy paper. In the book, it is possible to actually
