History
Weightlifting was on the program at the first modern Olympics in 1896 with two events: The one-hand lift and the two-hand lift. There were similar events in 1904 and 1906. Weight categories were established in 1920, with medal standings based on the aggregate of multiple types of lifts. There were three lifts in 1920: The one-hand snatch and the one-hand and two-hand clean and jerk. In 1924, there were five: The one- and two-hand snatch, one- and two-hand clean and jerk, and the two-hand press From 1928 through 1972, the three standard lifts were the press, the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Since 1976, there have been only two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is given three attempts at each type of lift. If there is a tie, it's decided in favor of the lifter with the lower body weight. Weight limits have changed several times over the years. Those shown are for the 2000 Olympics.

Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Olympic History: Weightlifting
No one can really pinpoint the origin of weightlifting. Its history can be traced back to the beginning of recorded history, where mankind's fascination with physical strength can be found among ancient writings. Weightlifting was among the first competitive sports to forge ahead as the 1800s saw athletics began a push toward organization during that time. However, the U.S. was a little slower to catch on. While America was still getting acquainted with the sport, the first European Championships were held across the pond in 1896. Suleymanoglu bombs out of Olympic weightlifting SportsLine.com wire reports
Sept. 17, 2000
SYDNEY, Australia Naim Suleymanoglu, the most successful weightlifter in history, lost at the Olympics the same way he won three times before. Big. Very big. Peshalov, who owns 10 world records, was the last lifter to beat Suleymanoglu before his retirement, upsetting him at the 1992 European championships, and the first man to beat him post-retirement. "I was very prepared, very confident," said Peshalov, an Olympic bronze medalist in 1996 and a silver medalist in 1992, both for Bulgaria. "It didn't make any difference whether he was in the competition or not." According to the president of the Turkish Olympic Committee, it mattered very much to people in high places whether Suleymanoglu returned or not.

Pocket Hercules fails in bid for fourth gold
Posted: Sunday September 17, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Thursday November 09, 2000 11:59 AM Naim Suleymanoglu retired after winning his third gold medal in 1996, but came out of retirement to pursue an fourth gold medal. Jed Jacobsohn/Allsport SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Naim Suleymanoglu, known as the Pocket Hercules and the most successful weightlifter in history, failed to win a fourth successful Olympic gold medal. Suleymanoglu's failure at 135 1/2 pounds (62 kg) following three years of retirement was as big as his successes at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Games. He missed all three attempts at 319 1/2 pounds in the snatch and thus did not move on to the clean and jerk.
