Although weightlifting is a sport that can be traced back to the earliest of
the Olympic Games, it is only in the post World War II years that it has been
given prominence in the national press of this country. And this has mainly
come about because a certain aspect of weightlifting, weight training, has
received widespread publicity because of the beneficial effects that it has
produced in almost every branch of sport. [How interesting that last sentence is - already 40 years ago, there were coaches
who accepted that weight training could play an useful role in all sports training,
yet there are still some today who maintain that it is useless or dangerous! Mel Siff] Today it is recognized that the successful athlete must have strength as well
as skill and stamina. But it has taken our coaches a long time to appreciate that the quickest and surest way to strength in muscle and joint is to be found in applying principles similar to those used for many years by successful weightlifters.

In St Louis (1904), Greek weightlifting obtained its first gold medal with Periklis Kakoussis of Panellinios GS. The Greek athlete lifted 111,70kg in two-hand lift, overcoming American Oscar Osthoff who took second place with 84,73kg. Born in 1879, Periklis Kakoussis, after his victory, remained in United States. Although he had many propositions to join American athletic clubs, he chose not to give up Panellinios. He came back to Greece in 1906 to compete at Mid-Olympics, where he took 6 th place. Dimitris Tofalos made his debut in 1906. He won the gold medal in two-hand lift after a tough battle with Austrian Josef Steinbach. Both athletes lifted 136kg, and there had to be an additional round to determine the winner. Finally, Tofalos prevailed with 142,8kg. Born in 1877, Tofalos moved to the United States right after the games, where he became a professional wrestler. Founding member of greek-american club “Hermes”, he trained the legendary Greek wrestler Jim Londos. Every year the Greek Weightlifting Federation holds an international tournament dedicated to Dimitris Tofalos and Periklis Kakoussis.

Weightlifting is closely related to the Revival of the Olympic Games. In 1896, weightlifting was included in the Olympic Games in Athens as an official sport without weight categories and with different rules from the current ones. Weight had to be pressed with only one hand – left or right – and with both hands. Alexandros Nikolopoulos and Sotiris Versis, the first two Greek participants, although they were too close, did not manage to win, because they were unaware of the whole system. It did not take long for Greek athletes to show their appeal to weightlifting. In 1904, in Saint Louis, Periklis Kakousis took first place, lifting with both hands 111,670kg. However, Dimitris Tofalos became a national hero after taking first place at the 1906 Mid-Olympics in Athens. It was the first time that our country met such a success in weightlifting. At those Olympics, weightlifting competition lasted only 2 days, mainly because the sport was at its offset. The bar weighed too much, 136kg, and only three athletes, Tofalos, Hungarian Veis and Austrian Steinbach, were able to continue. Then, only Tofalos and Steinbach attempted at 142.800kg.

Subject: RT: Weightlifting East Timorese Makes History Weightlifting East Timorese Makes History Updated 4:35 AM ET September 16, 2000 SYDNEY (Reuters) - Weightlifter Martinho de Araujo made history Saturday by becoming the first East Timorese to compete as an independent athlete at the Olympic Games. "I have gone through a lot of difficulty at home today I lifted not only weights but my country as well," said de Araujo, who wore a plain white vest sporting the five Olympic rings as his team uniform. De Araujo, one of four East Timorese competitors in Sydney, came last in the men's 56 kg weight class, but his participation alone was hailed as a victory. The former schoolteacher's homeland was ravaged by pro-Indonesia militia last year after East Timor voted overwhelmingly for independence. De Araujo's Olympic teammate, boxer Victor Ramos, was forced to flee for his life into the territory's mountains as the militia launched a wave of killing and destruction. The weightlifter won hearts around the world Friday as he broke into a jig when he and his fellow East Timorese athletes entered Sydney's Olympic stadium to massive applause during the spectacular opening ceremony.

Weightlifting Renaissance By Mal Irwin Many years ago, I considered myself the up-and coming champion of the future. However, as is usually the case, sadly, study and work intervened to distract me from training. To be quite honest, I never forgot about my lifting career; just never had the time or often, the place. Bar and weights cannot be carried on aeroplanes. My full-time training effectively ended in 1974, at the age of twenty-one. I carried on whenever I had the chance, eventually selling my own Archer weights when I decided I would be too busy to ever train again. Bodyweight bloomed to 83kg, from trying to live the life of a professional geological consultant. My wife has a photo of me next to a bottle tree in the Domain at Sydney, forming parallel curves. However, life provide little opportunities to catch up on what was thought lost. I got a The end result, and the best, was a third at the 1986 States, with a 105+137.5 as a light 82.5kg (78kg, exactly). In the interim I had picked up a seventh Intervarsity Title at 75kg with 102.5 and 132.5 in Newcastle. One month later, my first son was born, weighing 4.7kg and restless. So the lifting went somewhat on hold, with squats in the garden shed, and power cleans on the lawn. It got so bad that I dislocated my elbow hanging nappies at 5 am one day after power jerks the night before. And as they say, the rest is history! Far from making 137.5 for the Master’s (that is the old 303lbs), I over did my overhead work to strain the supraspinatus tendon in my right shoulder. For nearly two months after achieving 130 at the 1994 States, I could not clean a weight, let alone do overhead work. Nonetheless after the lowly start in 1993, I consider that 100 and 130 were not bad weights at age 41. I had managed to do these lifts several times in "comebacks" through my twenties and early thirties. The question is can I repeat them in the late forties, let alone the fifties?

The Olympic Games as we know them have been around for over 100 years. But did you know that the Games go back to a tradition that began in the eighth century B.C.? This article picks up where Part I left off. Read on to find out about the end of the original Olympic Games, and how they came back, better than ever, after 1,500 years!
This week:
The Games Are Banned
After Rome conquered Greece in 146 B.C., the Olympics diminished in importance and religious significance. Many athletes became interested only in winning money. In A.D. 393, the Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games because they had declined in quality. Over time, people forgot about the Olympics, and no Games were held for more than 1,500 years. Then, in 1875, a group of German archaeologists came upon the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia. Seeing the ruins inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, to organize a modern international Olympics. He believed that individuals needed to test their athletic skills against others.

OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING
History It's almost impossible to trace an exact date of the first weightlifting championship. Tests of human strength, in one form or another, are probably older than civilization itself. Images of athletes lifting heavy objects, apparently for sport, appear in ancient Egyptian records, in Chinese texts and in Greek carvings. The first organized weightlifting competitions began in Europe in the late 1800's, and the sport's first world champion was crowned in 1891. In those unsophisticated days there were no divisions, the world crown went to the man able to lift the most weight, regardless of his own size. Weightlifting was on the program for the first Games in 1896, as part of athletics, but was left out of the 1900 Games. It reappeared in 1904 but didn't return to the Olympic fold again until 1920 when it was admitted in its own right. In those early days, Olympic weightlifting incorporated some events which would seem strange today. The first competitions consisted of one and two-handed lifts with no weight divisions. But by 1932 five weight divisions had been established and three disciplines made up the competition press snatch and clean-and-jerk . In 1972 the press was abolished, leaving the snatch and clean and jerk as the sport's two Olympic disciplines. The women's competition made its Olympics debut in 2000 in Sydney.
