    Early Welsh Literature
    Dear Data Wales,
Thank you for your site on Wales. I am a writer (mostly fantasy fiction at this point) and I have been searching the net for sites on Wales. You can get all you want of Irish Celts...but I want WALES!! The Welsh culture and language fascinate me. My hero is Welsh.
What I have not been able to find (and perhaps no one knows) is more about Welsh Bards (of the old tradition, not those of the Eisteddfod) and Bardic tradition in Wales. I can find plenty about that hierarchy in Ireland, but I understand the tradition fell into disuse in favor of more Anglo-centric traditions in Wales. If you have any suggestions, I'd be obliged. Thank you, Scribe Dear Scribe, You might be surprised to know that the earliest known literature in Welsh dates from the late sixth century, but was not necessarily written in Wales. By this date, the Roman occupation of much of Britain was a distant memory and Germanic invaders were pushing westwards across the country. The native tongue, an early form of Welsh, was in use over the western part of the country all the way from southern Scotland, through Wales to modern Cornwall. The Romans had never attempted to conquer Ireland and the relative isolation of that country no doubt accounts for the more widespread survival of early literature. Wales, despite Roman, Anglo Saxon, Irish and Norman French incursions, does have a body of early literature and an ideal introduction to this is to be found within

    Welsh Studies
Welsh language and literature have been taught at Lampeter since 1827 and it is manifest that we do it rather well. At the moment you may have little Welsh or indeed none at all, but if you have a desire to study a mature and modern Celtic culture - which may or may not be your own - then our Welsh Studies degree scheme is specifically intended for you. Our Welsh Studies degree scheme is unique within the university system. It offers an opportunity to study a linguistic and literary heritage which extends over 1,500 years. Wales, together with Ireland, has the oldest surviving European literary tradition and, the broad Celtic dimension of Welsh Studies is evident in the optional modular courses in Irish and Breton accommodated by the degree scheme.
    The Demand for Welsh
Our graduates in Welsh Studies normally enter the professions: banking, accountancy, law, publishing, journalism, marketing, radio and television, as well as the more traditionally defined areas for arts graduates within the civil service local government and education.

    58. WELSH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
However, there's a lot more to it than that! welsh literature dates backto the 6th century, making Welsh Europe's oldest living language.
    http://westwales.co.uk/lang.htm
Welsh culture is popularly associated with singing - particularly male voice choirs - and with harp music. However, there's a lot more to it than that! Welsh literature dates back to the 6th century, making Welsh Europe's oldest living language. Welsh is a Celtic language, closely related to Breton and more distantly related to Scottish and Irish Gaelic. It is still the mother-tongue of a large number of people, and is taught either as a first or second language in all schools in Wales. Courses in Welsh for adults are held all over the country; one special location for residential courses is the Nant Gwrtheyrn centre (details of this site are also available in Welsh ). A Web-based Welsh course is also available. Modern Welsh literature has been written in both English and Welsh in all the standard literary forms - poetry, drama, novels, short stories etc; one of the leading modern Welsh publishers is Y Lolfa, whose catalogue is now available on the Web. A useful site containing information about many aspects of the poetry of Wales in both Welsh and English is available on the Web.
