Hare Krishna Movement in Trouble (San Francisco Chronicle, 2-14-2001) In 1975, Swami Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the worldwide Hare Krishna movement, was visiting his Berkeley temple when a disciple asked him the $64, 000 question. "What will happen when you die?" His answer is enshrined on a plaque inside the ornate East Bay temple, between a life-size replica of Prabhupada and flower-bedecked statues of Hindu deities. "I will never die," the India-born guru replied. "I shall live through my books." Two years later, Prabhupada was dead. And while his books survive, the Hindu sect he built is foundering, mired in power struggles and legal troubles. One of the tests facing any spiritual cult or religious sect is surviving the death of its charismatic founder. For the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, the founding guru's decision to pass the flame to 11 separate disciples may have been a fatal error. Years of infighting among Prabhupada's successors - along with a huge sexual abuse lawsuit filed against them by the children of Hare Krishna parents - may soon bankrupt the movement.

I f natural beauty inspires learning, it is no wonder that the Blue Ridge is lined with some of the finest colleges and universities in Virginia. Shoot, why stop there? The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech have both been cited by national publications for their academic excellence. Tech, in the heart of the New River Valley, took a leading role in establishing one of the world's first electronic villages, while "Mr. Jefferson's University" in Charlottesville continues to turn out leaders in medicine, law and business. Every major city in the Shenandoah Valley has at least one college or university, and the area has several college preparatory, parochial and military boarding schools. The Roanoke Valley is home to Roanoke College and Hollins. Excellent prep schools include North Cross and Roanoke Catholic. Harrisonburg, the seat of Virginia's leading agricultural county of Rockingham, bustles with academic activity. James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University and Bridgewater College are within a few miles of each other. To the south, in historic Staunton, are Mary Baldwin College, a Presbyterian-affiliated school for women, and Stuart Hall, Virginia's oldest Episcopal preparatory school for girls. In addition to Mary Baldwin College, several esteemed private women's colleges are in the mountains and foothills of the Blue Ridge, including Hollins College in Roanoke, Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg and Sweet Briar College in Amherst.

Dumela! It is hard to believe that I've been in Botswana almost two months! I have passed through the Western Region and am now in the Northwest Region – the Okavango area. In the Western Region I stayed in the villages of Lokgwabe and Kang. In Lokgwabe, I lived with a teacher. That gave me the opportunity to learn more about Botswana's educational system. Education is organized on a couple of different levels. First is the primary level, which covers Standard One through Standard Seven. It is similar to our elementary schools and the beginning of our middle schools. After primary schooling comes secondary, but it is split into two levels junior secondary (Form One, Two and Three) and senior secondary (Forms Four and Five). As far as years go, both Botswana and the U.S. educate students for 12 years. However, most Botswanians don't complete the levels in succession. People here are surprised that I graduated from college when I was 21, turning 22. Schooling is mandatory only up through Form Three. If the student fails the Form Three comprehensive exams, he or she cannot continue. Most students are around 20 when they complete Form Five.

Posted on: 06/28/2001 You've Got Mail By Mark Bromann Thanks to the advent of electronic mail, I receive my share of interesting notices that sometimes turn into a little dialogue. Issue: 7/01 In December 2000, the following sequence of informative news and repartee found its way across my computer screen. 11/27/00, from gbcurtis@citynet.net to markbro@owc.net: I ran across your article posted at www.pmengineer.com. I have an interest in the fire safety standards at a West Virginia college that, because of lax state standards and college administration lassitude, is poor, especially with respect to concerns for the fire safety of students living in non-college-maintained (fraternity) housing. Because of your professional interest, you may be able to point me to what the current Fire Code Regulations regarding sprinklering fraternity houses read in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, where, in the case of this particular West Virginia college, 31% of the male students originate. My premise for this discussion is that when 31% of the males at a college have the potential to live in a fraternity house, and those male students come from states that, had they roomed at institutions of higher learning in that state, they would have been under the care of presumed more rigorous Fire Codes than a West Virginia college, especially one that is church affiliated, and has an obligation as it acts in loco parentis to strive to assure the same safety standards that the student could have reasonable expected in his home state. Any help you can provide with regard to basic information about Fire Codes in these states, particularly with respect to college fraternity houses, will be appreciated.

NORTH AMERICAN BOARDING SCHOOL Linda Houghton, 802-442-8407, CEO of a newly formed organization called North American Boarding Schools, announced she is lining up a 350 acre property in northern Vermont that seems perfect for their first school. The plans are for a boarding school with integrated emotional growth and academics. The school will be for children who have trouble making good decisions, but do not need a treatment center. Houghton says she specifically “does not want this to be a treatment center.” Instead, she sees this as a potential model for all boarding schools. Houghton is very excited about her progress and anticipates opening the school sometime this Spring.

Sat, 18 Dec 1999 17:12:25 +1000 Hi Alan,
It is our intention to provide home-like boarding accommodation for Students
and Staff on our 16.4ha (40 acres) campus. The approved plans for the
accommodation include that it will be in octagonal buildings, with kitchen,
lounge, 2 to 3 bedrooms with 2 to 3 Students in each or a separate bedroom
for Staff. We will have a low Staff to Student ratio, so that the
accommodation operates very much like family settings. Extensive research
has been undertaken into boarding fees, and what is charged by other
boarding Schools. We have a good idea about what we will charge. Depending
on demand, we hope that the first accommodation will be constructed in 2001. There is already a requirement for boarding for 4 Students and 2 Staff, with
