http://www.bolivarwv.us/history/A_SHORT_HISTORY_OF_BOLIVAR.htm
WHO LIVED HERE FIRST? Our history begins over 1000 years ago. In Bolivar, Native American artifacts have been found from the 12 th Century—300 years before Columbus arrived in the New World. The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia was the home of tribes of the Iroquois Nation when European settlers first arrived. The Delaware and Shawnee tribes hunted in the area during spring and summer seasons. Explorer Louis Michel, looking for land for a Swiss settlement, reported Indians in the area during his 1706 travels along the west bank of the Potomac River. HOW WAS THE AREA GOVERNED? Soon after the 1607 establishment of Jamestown, Virginia, English settlers moved inland and grew in numbers to establish the Colony of Virginia for the Royal Crown. The Colony was divided into eight counties in 1634, and the land, which is now Bolivar, was part of the Indian District of Cickacoan. The Eastern Panhandle was part of Virginia until 1863 when the State of West Virginia was admitted to the Union during the Civil War. At varying times in history, we were part of Essex County (1691-1720), Spotsylvania (1720-34), Orange (1734-38), Frederick (1738-72) and Berkeley County.

One summer, she spent nearly eight hours a day at the pool. Mia goes to Washington International School, a private school in DC known for its rigorous curriculum. Her afternoons are filled with homework as well as piano and flute practice. Camp Friendship is popular with Washington families. In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is bordered by a lake and a river and features tennis courts, a barn, paddocks, and a gymnastics center. Campers have their pick of more than 50 activities, including canoeing, mountain boarding (the summer equivalent of snowboarding), jazz dance, lacrosse, and photography. Camp staff try to create a competition-free environment.

April, 2001 Coal Miners and Their Communities
in Southern Appalachia, 1925-1941 by
Rhonda Janney Coleman
(Part One of Two Parts)
(Ms. Coleman has a B.A. from WVU Tech and is a teacher in the Fayette County, WV School System) There is a popularly held image of coal towns; they are dirty, squalid, poverty- stricken, collections of hovels with the atmosphere of concentration camps. (1) These are pockets of poverty controlled by overbearing, manipulative and ruthless coal operators. Similarly, common imagery portrays coal miners as being dirty, poor, bereft of the opportunity, ability or desire to better themselves. They are seen at the mercy of coal operators and the company store; constantly in debt, down trodden and wretched. Allegedly, the coal operators are to blame for this situation. Some say that ruthless, powerful, rich men who were unconcerned about the miners, their wives and children who inhabited the hastily built and poorly constructed structures that comprised towns with names like Rock Lick, Kaymoor, Concho, Terry, Lookout and Dunglen Mountain. These apparently vicious men in the early years hired armed guards like the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency to prevent their workers from forming the unions that would later demand higher wages, better conditions and safety and health regulations.

PRATT, RICHARD HENRY (1840-1924). Richard Henry Pratt, army officer and founder of Carlisle Indian School, the oldest of three sons of Richard and Mary (Herrick) Pratt, was born on December 6, 1840, at Rushford, New York. He had smallpox as a child and carried the scars on his face for the rest of his life. In 1846 the family moved to Logansport, Indiana, where Richard grew up near the banks of the Wabash River. In 1849 his father successfully searched for California gold but was robbed and murdered by another prospector. Thus Richard, at age thirteen, left school in 1853 to help support his family. For five years he worked as a printer's devil and earned extra income by splitting rails. Then he apprenticed himself to a tinsmith in Delphi for three years. With the outbreak of the Civil War qv Pratt enlisted in the Ninth Indiana Infantry and was elected corporal. He took part in the early Union campaigns in West Virginia. After three months he reenlisted as a sergeant in the Second Indiana Cavalry, serving under generals William S. Rosecrans and George H. Thomas. qv Pratt thus saw action in several major engagements in the West. In the battle of Chickamauga, a stray cannonball missed killing him by inches when his horse, on seeing the missile, stopped in time. Back in Indiana on recruiting duty in the winter of 1863-64, Pratt met Anna Laura Mason of Jamestown, New York, whom he married on April 12, 1864. They eventually had a son and three daughters. Eight days after his marriage, Pratt was commissioned first lieutenant in the Eleventh Indiana Cavalry. After further wartime service in Alabama, including a stint as inspector and judge-advocate of the Fifth Division, he was mustered out of the army, on May 29, 1865, with the rank of captain of volunteers.
