Channing Laboratory, Brigham and Women's Hospital. Boston, MA This project will analyze data from a longitudinal survey of nearly 17,000 adolescents, now 14 to 18 years old, who have been tracked since 1996 with annual assessment of diet, activity, weight control practices, and height and weight. The data from 1996-2000 will be used to describe changes in dietary patterns and diet quality during adolescence and the association of those changes with overall diet quality and the development of obesity. Specific aspects of diet quality that will be examined include: (1) intake of calories from fat, soft drinks, and other sources of added sugar; (2) breakfast consumption; and (3) a glycemic index based on intake of saturated fat and low-fat foods, added sugar, and fiber. Results will be useful for the design of obesity prevention programs for children and adolescents.

    Junk Food in Schools
Summer 2001 Good nutrition helps young people grow, develop and do well in school. Research suggests that skipping breakfast can hurt children's intellectual performance. Hungry children are more likely to have behavioral, emotional and academic problems at school. In 1946, Congress enacted the National School Lunch Act, which was later expanded to include breakfast, snacks and summer food service, as a way to alleviate problems due to hunger. Today, many schools provide food through vending machines, school stores and snack bars.
    What Are Competitive Foods?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines a competitive food as one that is not part of a reimbursable school lunch or breakfast. The USDA divides competitive foods into two categories: those with "minimal nutritional value" and "all other foods offered for individual sale." Foods of minimal nutritional value, such as carbonated beverages, provide less than 5 percent of the recommended dietary allowance for key nutrients. National School Lunch and Breakfast Program regulations require state agencies and local school food authorities to establish rules to control the sale of competitive foods. All other foods offered for individual sale

Since 1977, the Family Practice Residency at Palmetto Health Richland has taken pride in training more than 200 successful family practice physicians for South Carolina and the nation. About half of our residents are from South Carolina. Others come from across the country, attracted by our urban community practice, affiliations with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, our multi-skilled faculty and an excellent geographic location.
    Family Practice Center
Our venerable family practice center is located in its own facility adjacent to Palmetto Health Richland. We are very excited by fast-track construction of a gorgeous state-of-the-art 33,000 square foot facility located on the corner of the hospital campus and scheduled for completion in January 2003. We aim to function as a large private group practice, as we combine quality healthcare delivery and state-of-the-art equipment with modern management procedures. We serve as a major healthcare provider to the community in a great setting for primary care education. An integrated computerized network is used for appointment scheduling and medical record documentation. All patient rooms, resident offices, nursing areas and study areas are fully equipped with computers for instant access to patient records, prescription writing and lab results. We boast great online teaching resources through Palmetto Health Richland's excellent infomatics service. Telemedicine capabilities are also available with our rural office in Winnsboro, S.C.

The Link Index The Link Volume 18 Number 3 Fall 999 "Increasingly, our schools are critical to bringing our communities together. We want them to serve the public not just during schools hours but after hours: to function as vital community centers; places for recreation and learning; positive places where children can be when they can't be at home and school is no longer going on; gathering places for young people and adults alike. Bringing our schools into the 21st century is a national challenge that deserves a national commitment." President Bill Clinton, July 11, 1996 Building Vital Community Centers When Congress established the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program, it envisioned rural and inner-city schools collaborating with community members; public and nonprofit agencies and organizations; local businesses; other educational entities; and community recreational, cultural, and human service groups. By focusing some part of their energies and resources on joint projects to benefit the educational, health, social services, cultural, and recreational needs of local families, they might power a new sense of community that could support lifelong learning for children and adults alike. To be funded, a Community Learning Center must operate within a public elementary, middle, or secondary school building and it must provide programs for residents of all ages. Its priority must be to offer activities that expand learning opportunities for the children and youth of the community.
