Native American Communities in West Virginia (as originally published in 1999) In West Virginia, the contemporary Native American population can best be described as a statewide community, consisting of a far-reaching network of individuals with Native American ancestry. There are approximately 3000 Native Americans in West Virginia. The community includes individuals from at least 43 different bloodlines and tribal associations. These are descendants from the regional Native Americans, including Cherokee and Shawnee, and individuals who more recently relocated to West Virginia from throughout North America. Many people in West Virginia have Native American blood, but do not have a historical tribal association, and many individuals have mixed blood, that is, ancestry of different tribes as well as different races in addition to Native American. The contemporary community reflects those who are finding new pride in their native heritage, and Native Americans who are newcomers to this area and who represent the pan-Indian community. The Native American community has struggled with oppression, imposed disruption, and insecurity since the arrival of European settlers in West Virginia. Individuals were being shipped away to Oklahoma reservations as late as the 1950s. As recently as 1964, it was illegal for a Native American to own property in West Virginia. In spite of these hardships, vestiges of communities survived and their heritage is re-emerging with renewed pride.

Ehrlich Jr. presented a legalized-gambling bill yesterday to the General Assembly that pledges that 64 percent of the profit will go toward public education. Top Stories      The state-regulated machines would operate in four Maryland racetracks that would stay open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day. Mr. Ehrlich expects the machines to generate about $1.2 billion a year, which would be split among the state, track operators, local governments and racing interests.      Mr. Ehrlich has staunchly opposed most proposed tax increases and warned that without revenue from slots the state will suffer drastic cuts in such vital services as aid to the poor and the disabled.      Delegate Peter Franchot, Montgomery Democrat, said that he had 71 sponsors — a House majority — for a bill that would impose a year-long moratorium on slots legislation. All the sponsors are Democrats, including most leaders in the Democrat-controlled House. The free music CDs are going to public schools and libraries. Partial refund payments will be mailed to consumers who submit valid claims to a court-appointed claims administrator. Details of the refund program will be announced later, once the court approves the settlement. Contrary to some news media reports appearing on this settlement, there are no free CDs being given to consumers at the retail stores. "Our antitrust investigation found illegal sales agreements being used to stifle competition and fix the prices of music CDs," Lockyer said.
