Bibliography of Indian Boarding Schools: Approximately 1875 TO 1940 Labriola Center
The following bibliography lists reference material dealing with Indian boarding schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These resources include material found in the Labriola National American Indian Data Center in the University Libraries at Arizona State University, websites, and other research facilities. This subject guide is also located on the Labriola Center website at www.asu.edu/lib/archives/labriola.htm
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

Looking at Boarding Schools Only if you are happy in your school will you make the most of the wonderful opportunity a United States education has to offer you. Do you like large schools or small schools? Are you most comfortable in a city, small town or countryside? Are you interested in attending a school which has a religious or military emphasis? Would you like to attend a school that is only for boys or girls? These are the questions you must ask yourself before you begin your search for the right school for you! To help you understand what is available in U.S. boarding schools, here is a description of what types of programs are available.
Single-Sex Schools
Single-sex schools, those for boys only or girls only, are some of the oldest boarding schools in the country. They offer boys and girls an opportunity to study without the distractions of a more social setting. For girls, it creates a greater chance to have a leadership role in the academic or extracurricular life of your school.
Military Schools
Military secondary schools have the same advantages as other private schools and also instill the value and importance of teamwork, dedication and discipline. Uniforms and drilling are often required.

The words conjure up images of dapperly dressed kids, brainy students andperhaps most of allmoney. However, as parents seek educational alternatives that will prepare their children for the 21st century, boarding schools are noticing an increase in their enrollment. No longer are these schools a haven for only legacies or the super-wealthy. In most cases, between one-quarter and one-half of the students are receiving financial aid of some sort, whether based on merit or financial need. Likewise, to end another myth, all of the children are not in "the gifted and talented" category; many are average kids who felt lost in large classrooms and highly competitive public schools. "One of the best descriptions of our school," says La Lumiere School's director of institutional advancement Marian Quirk, "comes from an alum who attended a large school prior to coming here. He described La Lumiere as a family versus a school." La Lumiere, located in LaPorte, Indiana, is a coeducational college preparatory school with a total enrollment of 100. Its teacher-to-student ratio is 6 to 1, and it has an average class size of 10.

    By Suzanne Westerly
    December 30, 2002
Like branches weighed down by a heavy snowfall, the 12 Indian nations of Wisconsin have been burdened with the weight of almost 200 winters of traumatic events. But like branches after a spring thaw, these nations are again standing strong today.
Author Patty Loew, Ph.D., an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe, has written a powerful and important new book, “Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal.” In her book, Loew weaves together origin stories, ancient songs, art, and symbolism with the historical perspectives of Wisconsin’s first people. She also discusses the critical Native issues of today: the economic and political developments along with the ongoing struggles over the environment, treaty rights, and sovereignty.
Lowe has long been frustrated by books about Wisconsin’s Natives based on “white” sources: missionary accounts, traders’ journals, and government documents. When asked to write the text for a large exhibit on Indian nations for Wisconsin’s sesquicentennial, Loew enthusiastically accepted. It was an opportunity to educate the state’s residents about the Natives’ triumphs over centuries of injustice.
