1000 Friends second book, In My Neighborhood – Celebrating Wisconsin Cities is here!
This year, the 1000 Friends Land Use Institute initiated its Cities Project to evaluate the vital contribution healthy cities make toward a healthy overall environment, and to change the dialogue about our urban areas from criticism to celebration. Our second anthology, In My Neighborhood , looks at the cities of Wisconsin from this more optimistic point of view. Its essays celebrate the opportunities and experiences available to us only in our cities and villages while they also address the many challenges our cities face.
Review from the Milwaukee Magazine
"I’ve just been paging through In My Neighborhood - Celebrating Wisconsin Cities , a new book published by Prairie Oak Press and 1000 Friends of Wisconsin. Reading these short essays and poems is like opening a stack of letters from good friends who share their personal experiences of urban life ... Words that spark images, ignite memory, connect us to the fabric of life lived in cities. The book helps support this environmental and land use group, but you’ll find no preaching, just eloquent voices holding up a mirror to city life... "What makes the book so engaging is not one particular piece but an accumulation of insights. Like the streets urban dwellers share, there is power in the communal experience.

An important role of 1000 Friends’ Land Use Institute is to digest the often confusing statistics, graphs and charts about land use and translate this information into a format people can use and understand. And although statistics (How much farm land do we lose to irresponsible development each year? How many communities have written comprehensive plans?) are important to understanding the impact of our land use decisions, an individual’s experience and sense of place is equally so (How is my community unique? How do I feel when I am walking around my neighborhood or in one of Wisconsin’s parks?). We write our publications such that they resonate with the broader public and will not only educate, but may also encourage readers to become active in local land use planning. Below find a list of our publications with a brief description and a link to our order page. Abstract
The intent of the applied research reported in this paper is to examine the relationship between growth and the fiscal health of a subset of local governments (incorporated cities) over the last decade. While any number of researchers has raised this question, the literature has tended to focus on larger urban areas during economic downturns. Ladd's (1994) most recent research looking at the fiscal effects of growth has become perhaps the most influential in this line of work. Ladd's research, however, is limited in that she focused on per capita spending, a variable of interest in itself and because it can be conceptually linked to service quality and tax burden. While the data used in her analysis do not reflect a period of economic downturn, the data are for large counties from across the U.S.

March 17-21, 2003. The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library, a sub-unit of the Department of Geography, provides a comprehensive collection of cartographic materials to support teaching and research on the Madison campus. The Map Library is named for Arthur H. Robinson, the well-known cartographer who taught on the campus from 1945 until he retired in 1980. It is located in the north wing of the third floor of Science Hall in an area which was remodeled in 1982. HOLDINGS The primary materials in the Robinson Map Library are maps, approximately 276,000; aerial photographs, approximately 231,700; and air photo mosaic indexes, approximately 2,470. In contrast, the Map Library contains only about 900 books, chiefly gazetteers for the United States and foreign countries; and essential reference materials. Other materials include globes; plastic relief models; wall maps, slides, and videocassettes for classroom use; and examples of remote sensing imagery. MAPS The Robinson Map Library tries to maintain a comprehensive collection of general and political maps for all parts of the world, a selection of appropriate thematic (for example, population or soils) maps, and maps of major cities. Topographic map series at various scales are also collected; for example, the United States at 1:24,000; Canada and parts of Western Europe and Central America at 1:50,000; and other areas at 1:250,000, 1:1,000,000, or 1:2,500,000. Other groups of materials include Department of Transportation maps for Wisconsin cities; U.S. Bureau of the Census maps for Wisconsin cities and counties; maps for numerous cities in the United States and Canada (including many smaller communities); state and provincial highway and recreational area maps; and selected university and college campus maps.
