Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area, Ariz., June 3 It had been 50 years since the howl of the Mexican gray wolf last echoed in the canyons of Arizona's Blue River. Hunted to extinction even in this faraway place, the gray wolf "el lobo," in local parlance was just a memory for all but the old-timers here on the high, forested plateau called the Mogollon Rim. When that unmistakable howl rang out again on April 1 of this year, ancestral memory stirred the elk and deer of the high country to take flight. Something in that powerful ululation raised the hair on a few human necks, too. On March 30, eleven gray wolves three adult males, three adult females, three female pups and yearlings, and two male pups were released from three acclimation pens within the 7,000-square-mile, federally designated Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area. Although plenty of visitors had come to see the wolves in captivity, among them Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, the release itself was a quiet event. Letting the wolves loose The lobos, the rarest of the world's wolves, have not traveled far; most have stayed within a mile or two of their pens. Groebner and his colleagues from several agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, expect the wolves to range more freely as they become more accustomed to life in the wild. They hope that the population just released in the Blue Range will grow to 100 by the year 2002, and perhaps sooner, and that this expanded population will disperse throughout the neighboring Apache National Forest in Arizona and the Gila National Forest in New Mexico.

T-Wolves, Wild owners team up
ST. PAUL, Minn. Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad has agreed to sell his team to Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and Wild lead investor Robert Naegele Jr. for $120 million if a new stadium is built. "It's been a great ride," Pohlad said Friday, recalling the 1987 and 1991 World Series championships during his 16 years as team owner. "This is a day of high emotion for me." "We are very optimistic and very pleased that things worked out over in St. Paul," he said. However, he stressed that the sale doesn't become final until a stadium is built. The deal faces several formidable obstacles, but Pohlad said he's optimistic that it will be accomplished. St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman announced the proposed sale Thursday night and expressed gratitude to the Pohlad family. Coleman has sought the sale as part of a plan to build a new stadium along the city's riverfront and entice the Twins to leave Minneapolis. Under the agreement, Pohlad would hand over control of the team to Taylor, owner of Minnesota's NBA team, and Naegele, managing partner of the NHL expansion Wild once the new stadium is assured. Until then, the team will be under dual stewardship, said Twins President Jerry Bell. Plans for a new $325 million stadium, as now structured, are contingent on St. Paul voters approving a Nov. 2 referendum calling for a sales tax increase that would finance one-third of the facility.

Wolves are a very misunderstood animal. It has been said wolves are dangerous and they attack humans, when in fact, In the United States there has never been a documented case where a healthy wild wolf has attacked a human, It is very rare when a wolf even comes near a human.
Wolves are very social animals that depend on each other for food and protection.
Wolves travel in packs which can be as small as two wolves, or be as big as twenty wolves.
A normal wolf pack can have a range of territory that spreads up to 60 miles, maybe even larger in certain locations.
All adult wolves in the pack share the responsibility of raising and caring for the pups. Wolves are normally afraid of people, and try to avoid them at all times.
Wolves have no natural predators, except for humans. Wolves howl to communicate with each other. Wolves know each members howl and use them to locate each other, and wolves enjoy howling.
Adult wolves have the ability to regulate their body temperatures to adapt to changes in the weather. Puppies can't, so they must stay close to the warmth of their mothers.

Having been virtually eliminated in the lower 48 states by 1965, most people now recognize the error of persecuting wolves and understand the value of large predators in suitable habitats for the health and proper functioning of an ecosystem. For more than two decades, the National Wildlife Federation has worked to restore wolves to their proper place in public understanding and on suitable wild landscapes. Our Focus Wolves in the Southern Rockies
Learn about the pros and cons of reintroducing gray wolves into this region.
  • Wolves are very shy of humans, and avoid them whenever possible. There has never been a documented fatal attack of a human by a healthy, wild wolf in North America.
  • Wolves are the top predator in their ecosystems, and as such perform a vital role in keeping those ecosystems healthy, balanced and diverse.
  • The greatest threat to the wolf is people's misconceptions about the threats these animals pose to them and their livestock, and the resultant poaching that still occurs.

Regurgitative Food Transfer Among Wild Wolves
By L. David Mech , Paul C. Wolf , and Jane M. Packard
Abstract : Few studies of monogamous canids have addressed regurgitation in the context of extended parental care and alloparental care within family groups. We studied food transfer by regurgitation in a pack of wolves on Ellesmere Island, North West Territories, Canada during six summers from 1988 through 1996. All adult wolves, including yearlings and a post-reproductive female, regurgitated food. Although individuals regurgitated up to five times per bout, the overall ratio of regurgitations per bout was 1.5. Pups were more likely to receive regurgitations (81%) than the breeding female (14%) or auxiliaries (6%). The breeding male regurgitated mostly to the breeding female and pups, and the breeding female regurgitated primarily to pups. The relative effort of the breeding female was correlated with litter size ( de Kendall = 0.93, P This resource is based on the following source (Northern Prairie Publication 1076): Mech, L. THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
In the real world, wolves are famous for eluding humans.
In the human imagination, though, Canis lupus looms large. Everywhere. Over centuries.
Gluttons wolf down their food. Those who cry wolf are soon ignored. The damned are thrown to the wolves. The indebted have a wolf at their door. Wolf whistles transform women into prey.
We have wolves in sheep's clothing to suggest sinister deceit. We have men who danced with wolves and women who run with them getting in touch with their wilder selves. We have wolves who have suckled the sons of the war god, Ares, and ordinary people who morphed into cannibalistic werewolves.
Onto wolves, humans have heaped our deepest fears and wishes in myth, folk tale and legend.

Wild Dog. What does that mean? Well, for some, Wild Dog is often used negatively. Wild Dog is not someone's pet gone wild but a legitimate term used to describe two of the most endangered carnivores in the world. The Wild Dog Foundation was formed with the intention of bringing notice to two greatly neglected carnivores. This will be done by education and with the hopes of raising funds for research projects. The Wild Dog of Africa (Lycaon Pictus) and the Dhole (Cuon Alpinus) of Asia are two forgotten carnivores in the popular world of conservation. They are often ignored along with other misunderstood Wild Dogs of the world.
The African Wild Dog is the most endangered carnivore in the world. They are also the most social member of the dog family. The African Wild Dog is one of the few mammals who takes care of its old, sick and disabled. They have colorful calico coats of black, yellow and white. Their numbers have severely declined due to disease, loss of habitat and human persecution.
Wild Dogs weigh between 35-70 lbs. As many as 40 dogs may be in a pack, but 8-15 is average.

Wolves in the Wild Rockies Downlisting
Listed as endangered in 1974, wolves were one of the first species to be placed on the Endangered Species Act. Recently, the US Fish and Wildlife Service put the finishing touches on a plan decreasing the protections of gray wolves in the lower 48 states. With this comes a new status for wolves, in most of the Unites States they are now listed as threatened, rather than endangered. The agency's premature downlisting is likely to reverse the wolf's recovery progress and push it back to the edge of extinction.
