Wolves Take Back the Wild By Pamela Parker One chilly early morning in late October of 1998, as the sun rose over Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley, biologist Robin Silverstein and the rest of his team of field technicians clambered up a rocky hillside and set up shop for a day of work. After assembling their telescope, booting up their handheld Hewlett Packard computer and unfolding their Crazy Creek camp chairs, the members of the Yellowstone Ecological Studies (YES) group scanned the verdant valley that has been called the"little Serengeti of North America" because of its abundant wildlife population. Elk, bison, and other big game range the meadow on the valley floor as they have for decades, but now things are changing in

Hearing Wolves in the Wild
Where to Go to Howl With the Pack By Marcus Wohlsen Hearing wolves in the wild is not as easy as it once was. Wolves in North America have been eliminated from 95 percent of their original habitat, mostly owing to human encroachment. Until the 1930s, the US government actively organized wolf extermination campaigns and offered bounties to hunters who killed wolves. The haunting cry of a wild wolf pack howling in the night was once ubiquitous on every continent. To hear it today, you'll need to brave some of the world's most rugged wildernesses. Grey wolf raises the cry.

Teenagers:
Wolves, Wild Dogs and Dingos
Breedlines article from Dogs in Canada October Issue: Teenagers- the reaction to this word is as multifaceted as the age group; extremes of mood, personality and physical development seem to be the earmark of this group, not to mention multicoloured hair, body piercing, new hobbies, friends and changing interests o ften... so to with the Shiba. Somewhere between the 6th and 8th month your cute little girl or boy, who up until now was a sweet cuddly little teddy bear suddenly begins to act like a.... like a teenager. Not able to run down to the tattoo parlour or piercing studio, your Shiba, who has endeared himself to you by bringing you his favourite toy as a gift, complete with ears laid back flat against his head and lips curled in a smile, now bears his teeth, hisses and growls at you as you perform routine household chores such as changing the water in HIS water dish or picking up HIS toys as you straighten up the house. The battle for the alpha position has begun! Like an ongoing game of chess, your Shiba teenager will test for the limits. "Loss of hearing" is a favourite ploy as is forgetfulness (oh, did I already learn not to jump on the furniture?)

http://secondchanceranch.org/mikeferreira.htm
Wolves (wild or captive-born) and Wolfdogs need a lot of protein to remain healthy. Even young wolf pups need "easily digestible proteins." Unfortunately, unprepared raw meat is not easily digestible for a young pup, whether a pure wolf or not. The raw meat controversy will go on for years - "Is what is available in the wild, just as good for my domestic dog?" Having dealt with Northern Breeds, Working Dogs, Wolves, Wolfdogs, Coyotes and Coydogs for most my life ... I can honestly say that this so-called new-found "BARF Diet" craze ... is just that. It is being recommended in ignorance and applied with tragic results. I had many friends who have grieved at the loss of their 4-leggeds because of a wrongly applied "idea." Let me share a little background on what wild Wolves really eat in the wild. Their main diet is meat from prey animals. This meat may be fresh and/or not fresh (carrion). When they eat an animal, they eat more than just the meat and bones. (I'll come back to this.)

The Wolf, Wolverine and Lynx Make a Comeback In Oregon
By Regna Merrit We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes - something known only to her and the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agree with such a view. -Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac

Wolves and Other Canids
Wolves have been a special interest of mine for many years, and I have a lot of books about them. Being interested in wolves leads naturally to being interested in other canids, so I have more than a few books about other members of the canid family too.
Books about wolves
There's probably been more written about wolves than about any other single living animal. I'm mainly interested in the science of wolves, so that's what my wolf books are mainly about. My books about wolves include: THE COMPANY OF WOLVES
Steinhart, Peter
c.1995, Alfred A. Knopf
ISBN: 0-679-41881-4
In-depth look at wolves and knowledge about wolves over roughly the last century. Includes detailed looks at red wolves, the wolves of Isle Royale, and the wolves that were recently reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park. The Company of Wolves is like a complement or update to Barry Lopez's book Of Wolves and Men . Steinhart more or less updates Lopez's view of wolves with the fruits of an additional twenty years of wolf research. FOLLOWING THE PACK: THE WORLD OF WOLF RESEARCH*

Tor Books $23.95/$34.95 Canada Hardcover, August 2000 ISBN 0-312-86626-7 Review by Curt Wohleber t's 1850 and thousands of pioneers are headed west. Among them is the McKensie family. Their dream of a new life in California ends suddenly when a stranger walks into their camp and shoots Rachel and William McKensie. Several days later, gold prospector Max Phillips discovers the bodies, along with an unfinished letter from Rachel McKensie to her sister back east. The letter mentions Rachel's three-year-old daughter, but there is no sign of the child's body at the campsite. Max and a motley band of miners search in vain for the little girl. Alone in the wilderness, Sarah would surely die if not for a she-wolf named Wauna, whose newborn pups have been slaughtered by the same man who killed Sarah's parents. The grieving wolf adopts Sarah, who is accepted as an equal, if decidedly odd, member of Wauna's pack. Though Sarah lacks the speed, fangs and keen sense of smell of her packmates, she more than makes up for it with her intelligence. Armed with a scavenged hunting knife, Sarah becomes a formidable hunter. Over the years a legend emerges about a savage child often seen in the company of wolves. Max wonders if this semi-mythical "wild angel" could be the long-lost Sarah McKensie. Max mounts a new search for the girl, hoping to rescue Sarah and reunite her with relatives. He's aided by a prosperous local businessman named Jasper Davis, whose motives are entirely different. Jasper is concerned that there may yet be a living eyewitness to his past crimes.

Judge Rules North Carolina Red Wolves Can Stay Wild
WASHINGTON, DC, December 31, 1998 (ENS) - Nearly 200 North Carolina red wolves will remain in the wild due to U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle's rejection last week of a challenge to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) red wolf reintroduction program.
Two landowners and two North Carolina counties filed a lawsuit to overturn the FWS regulation that governs the killing or trapping of endangered red wolves on private property. The plaintiffs alleged that the federal regulation to protect endangered red wolves on private property was unconstitutional, but the court disagreed.
Intervening on behalf of FWS, Washington based environmental group Defenders of Wildlife began the court battle nearly a year ago to protect the reintroduction program.
"The reintroduction of the red wolf is one of the Endangered Species Act's greatest success stories and the first recovery program in the United States of any species that was officially extinct in the wild," explains Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife. "This decision represents a significant victory for the endangered red wolf and the Endangered Species Act itself."

Wild Sentry for Wolves

By Amy Gulick When Wild Sentry, the Northern Rockies Ambassador Wolf Program, traveled to Silver City, New Mexico last year, more than 450 people attended for what was expected to be a shouting, gun-slinging, heated debate. Instead, people listened, and many changed their minds about wolves. Started by Patricia Tucker and Bruce Weide in 1991, the Wild Sentry "pack" is comprised of Koani, a female gray wolf; Indy, her dog companion; Tucker, a wildlife biologist; and Weide, the storyteller. Together, they travel to regions where wolf populations are slowly recovering to challenge stereotypes about wolves. They make 150 presentations to more than 20,000 people annually. "Wild Sentry presents information that lets people make their own assessments of wolves based on science, natural history and biological fact," says Cynthia Wayburn, a New Mexico audience member. Wild Sentry's main audience is children because, says Tucker, "This generation will ultimately decide future wolf recovery." As part of her presentation, Tucker stresses that wolves don't eat little girls in red hoodsor their grandmothers. "`Little Red Riding Hood' has really influenced peoples' attitudes toward wolves," says Tucker. "We need to teach a different meaning of the story, so we don't raise more generations afraid of wolves."

WESTERN ROUNDUP - February 16, 1998
Wolves go wild in the Southwest
by Michael J. Robinson
WAITING FOR FREEDOM: Mexican wolf. Jim Clark, USFWS In the fall of 1917, Stanley P. Young rode into the Canello Hills in southern Arizona, saddlebags packed with the tools of his trade: steel-jawed traps, metal stakes and chains, leather gloves and a bottle of odiferous wolf lure. The hired gun for the Bureau of Biological Survey was following a pair of wolves whose tracks wandered back and forth across the Mexican border.
According to Young, she was the first Mexican wolf in Arizona killed by federal trappers in a campaign that, by the 1930s, had eliminated breeding populations of the wolf from the Southwest. Wolves continued to cross the border from Mexico into the 1970s, but by 1980 they were thought to have disappeared from the wild.
It almost never happened The wolves will acclimate for six to eight weeks before being released into a 7,000 square-mile "recovery zone" straddling the Arizona-New Mexico border on the Apache and Gila national forests. The area is a world of rocky red bluffs, precipitous canyons, juniper-scented mesas and upland forests of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir - sort of like southern Utah with clothes on. The Fish and Wildlife Service hopes the wolves will increase to 100, at which point they can be taken off the endangered species list.

I'm in 5th Grade and I live in Bryan Texas. I like surfing the net and I like these animals! Armadillo Online! The pictures are really neat...........and funny. The other thing about this page is it has good points on the fact page. I know more about armadillos because I live in Texas. Did you know armadillos always have identical quadruplets? I have a stuffed armadillo that I named Army! Beavers The thing I like about this page is it makes a good point about some stupid human mistakes. And also the things beavers are good for. It's made by The University of Nebraska and they have lots of pages about other beasties. I've seen a cool film about beavers it showed the beavers making their home and the inside of it. Holy Bat Box Batman! it's The Buzbee Bat House Temperature Plot ! The Coolest thing about this page is that it has so many links that it took me days to read them!!!!!!!! The guy has gone batty over bats! I like bats a whole lot, because bats are definitely some of the most amazing animals in the world!!!!! The coolest thing about bats are the way they have their babys. wolfsite There are 3 reasons I chose this page...................
