The wolf, to me is a symbol of family unity. It has a mystical, somewhat magical quality about it. The wolf is a proud creature that is misunderstood and often feared. It is a predator that mainly lives out in the wilderness areas of the world. But with the growing population of mankind, they are being pushed closer and closer to extinction. The fairy tales make the wolf out to be a vicious killer of man and beast, when if the truth be known, a wolf will only attack when it is backed into a corner with nowhere to go.(I would do the same, wouldn't you?) On these pages you will see and learn about, one of the most hauntingly beautiful

Environmental Issues
Dangers of Wolves in the Wild
  • Only 300 wolves in parts of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming including 100 in Yellowstone would yield a population large enough to warrant removing the gray wolf from the endangered species list, says the USFWS.
  • However, an inquiry under the Freedom of Information Act revealed that the USFWS had failed to conduct or review the appropriate studies.
  • According to published studies on minimum viable population size, 1,500 to 2,000 wolves would be needed to ensure sufficient genetic diversity.
Because wolves can reproduce quickly and disperse widely by more than 200 miles this size population would soon spill out into areas populated by humans. Sound conservation requires facing inevitable trade-offs among alternative environmental values says Kay.
  • Critics, including a growing number of conservationists, charge that wolf recovery could endanger other wildlife and livestock in the region.
  • In Canada, for example, by reducing game hunting wolf recovery reduced public support for habitat preservation.
  • Consequently, although Canada now has an estimated 60,000 wolves, less land is available to support other fauna and flora.

http://www.cosmosmith.com/european_wolves.html
European Wolves
European wolves, as most all others, live and hunt in packs which are extended families of an alpha (the dominant male), his mate, and their offspring. They usually stay within a home range, but may wander far outside their territory to hunt. They hunt and kill game up to 10 times heavier than their own weight. Wild reindeer, elk, and red deer are their favorite prey. European wolves will also eat much smaller animals such as mice and frogs. Because of the decline in the number of wild game, they have begun to prey on domestic horses, cattle, and dogs. Starving wolves will even eat potatoes, fruits, buds, and lichen.
The alpha male and female mate between January and March. The cubs are born seven weeks later in a den dug among bushes or rocks. The male brings food back to the den, either by carrying it whole or by swallowing and then regurgitating it for the others to eat. As the cubs grow, the mother and other members of the pack help to feed them.
Few European countries still have substantial numbers of wolves. Wild wolves are hard to count, so exact numbers are not known. Sometimes radio-tracking is used to determine their numbers. European wolves have managed to survive only in the most remote, mountainous, or densely forested regions. Areas in which these wolves can live without coming into conflict with humans are decreasing. There is little effective international agreement about the wolf's conservation. All efforts to preserve the wolf are conducted locally.

Many ranchers oppose the return to the wild of the Mexican gray wolf. (CBS)
It seemed simple enough. Eleven Mexican gray wolves, raised in captivity, would be released into the Arizona woods, multiply and live on their own for the first time in more than half a century. But the animals quickly got into trouble.
(CBS) There's a war over wild wolves in the American West. It pits traditional enemies against each other in a feud that has already claimed casualties. As Correspondent Jim Stewart reports, the conflict has become extremely heated. Since the program to reintroduce the Mexican gray wolf began, five wolves have been shot dead, and others have simply disappeared. Locals blame the government for caving into the environmental movement. Environmentalists, in turn, blame the government for the program's failures.

Wild wolves may have had pups
Biologists say newly released lobos in Arizona appear to have given birth to the first litter born in the wild in decades.
By John Hill TRIBUNE REPORTER Two Mexican gray wolves released into the wild in eastern Arizona six weeks ago appear to have given birth. The pups would be the first lobos born in the wild in decades, an auspicious beginning to the effort to re-establish the endangered animals. "That would be a tremendous start to the program," said Dave Parsons, Mexican wolf recovery leader for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Biologists are concluding pups may have been born because it's the right time of year and the two wolf packs in recent days have started to localize their movements around certain spots, indicating the females may have denned. But there have been other, less-encouraging developments among the nine wolves roaming the wild. Two young female wolves have broken away from their packs and have been spotted close to towns.

Question #12 Reminder: The selected responses presented below are a reflection of the collaborative effort of Hybrid Wolf Mailing List aka. Some responses have been edited for brevity.
Wolfdog FAQ - Question # 11
Do people take wolves from the wild to keep as pets ? Is that where wolfdogs come from?
The answer to this question is NO or almost never. It is too hard to locate a den and get the pups before they are too old to socialize (10 to 14 days). For the amount of time and effort involved it is much less expensive to raise them. Nearly all wolves and wolfdogs are from animals that have been raised in captivity for many, many generations. Wolfdogs (F1 wolfdogs anyway) are normally produced by breeding captive wolves to dogs. Two common lies often told by disreputable breeders are that they dug wolf pups from a den and the other common lie is that they tied a female dog in heat out where she was bred by a wolf or that a wild wolf just happened to breed with her. While this is possible it is extremely unlikely, nearly all wild wolves would kill any dog they found or even sometimes other wolves not belonging to their pack. The normal reason for them to tell you a story like this would be to avoid telling the the truth, normally because you could then find out that the animal isn't what they claim it to be.
