History of Wrestling Origin:
The first recorded Olympic wrestling match occurred in the Olympics in 708 BC. Wrestling was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. There were two distinct versions of the game, differing according to the holds and the methods of deciding the victor.
Variations:
Orthia pale
Upright and Proper Wrestling
The object of this type of wrestling was simply to throw the opponent to the ground. Three falls constituted a loss for that opponent, and the winner was called the "triakter". The match continued without stops until one man emerged victorious.
Kato pale Ground Wrestling
Victory in this competition depended on one competitor acknowledging defeat. Defeat was indicated by raising one's right hand with the index finger pointed. Rules of the Game: Blows were not allowed.
Tripping was permitted.
No biting or gouging was allowed.
There was no weight distinction.
The wrestlers were anointed with olive oil then dusted with powder to make them easier to grasp. The competition took place in the "keroma", or beeswax, a muddy and sticky arena. Characteristics of a Good Wrestler: Since there was no weight provision in the Olympics, it is obvious that the sport required a strong and stout build. A special combination of agility, skill and craft were also necessary.

In the valley at Olympia in Elis, a short distance from the western coast of Greece, the first recorded Olympic Games were held. But, it is suspected that the games started 500 years earlier. So important were these contests that time was measured by the four-year interval between the Games; the term "Olympiad" describing this period. The Olympic Games were originally restricted to freeborn Greeks. The competitors, including those who came from the Greek colonies, were amateur in the sense that the only prize was a wreath or garland. In ancient times, four great games festivals were held in Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games in

That is why I consider myself extremely lucky. "
In our last issue of BCM Online, Olympic and World Champion Daniel Igali was not available to speak with BCM. Recently BCM caught up to Daniel and spoke with him about Nigeria, the Olympics, and the future. BCM How was your trip back to Nigeria to see your family as Olympic Champion? Daniel:
I had a great time in Nigeria. It was a completely different reception from the one I received in 1999 when I returned home after the World championship victory, for one, I think the reception was more grand because Nigeria as a country did not win any gold medals at the last Olympics She won three silver medals. My friends in the press had written quite a few articles about me and so people knew or my homecoming. I especially had a great reception in my home state, Bayelsa State, where the state government put me up and had security for me untill I came back to Canada. The Canadian embassy was also very helpful with regards to disseminating information about me and arranging a very successful reception for me on the 12th of December where all the media personnel were invited. I'd say I had a fabulous time without a doubt.
BCM: Does your family now believe that your choice not to return to Nigeria in 1994 was correct?

History of Wrestling. Wrestling is a fast growing sport in Australia. Many Australians know more about the modern Professional Wrestlemania, with all its theatre, public adoration, rich remuneration, and publicity stunts. However, the true sport of wrestling is rooted in antiquity, and is quite different and exciting. Archaeological finds depict wrestling in Egypt and Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago. Documentary evidence puts the sport in India and China well before the Christian era. In fact, virtually every society around the globe sports a long tradition of some form of wrestling. And the ancient Greeks were among the most fanatic of fans. The Greeks depicted wrestling on coins, pottery, and statuary. Most of the colonnade of the palaestra at Olympia still stands today, testimony to the site of the wrestling competition in the ancient Olympic Games. The complex included a roofed area for matches and side rooms for the competitors to wash, bathe, and oil down for their matches. Wrestling also figures prominently in classical Greek legend, myth, and epic. The rules were simple back then: Throw your opponent to the ground, making him land on his hip, shoulder, or back. Two of three falls takes the match. Don't punch, gouge, or bite. Unlike today's professional wrestling, there were no managers, ring girls, folding-chair attacks, or steel cages. No ridiculous costumes, either - matches were in the nude.

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Wrestling In The USA
By Bob Dellinger, Director Emeritus National Wrestling Hall of Fame
Note: RESTLING already was an established sport among the Native Americans in the 15th and 16th Centuries, when the first Europeans began arriving on the North American continent. Little has been handed down about the various styles practiced, but they are thought to have varied greatly from tribe to tribe. There was a common thread of savagery that typified the pursuits of warriors.
What's Here
The Oldest Sport Wrestling in the USA Changing of the Guard The English in the Colonies and the French in Canada made wrestling a popular sport at their social gatherings in early pioneer days. Before long, practically every settlement had its own champion, and there would be contests between various title-holders. The colonists started out with the Greco-Roman style, but it proved too dull and wrestling evolved into a more wide-open style. During the 18th Century, wrestling appeared to have mellowed from its early ferocity into a legitimate spectator sport, a bit on the rough-and-ready side, but legitimate. It was the major physical contact sport among men of all classes (boxing did not catch on until near the end of the 19th Century).

Wrestling , sport in which one contestant competes with another using various holds and techniques in an attempt to force the shoulders of the opponent against a mat, thus scoring a fall and winning the match. If a wrestler cannot score a fall within the time limit, a winner is determined based on a point-scoring system. All wrestling matches are supervised by officials, who impartially enforce the rules of the sport.
Two basic styles of amateur wrestling are generally employed around the world: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Other forms of wrestling are common within different cultures. Amateur wrestling is highly popular in the United States in colleges and universities, secondary schools, and athletic clubs. In addition to national championship matches, thousands of regional and local tournaments are held each year. Exhibition wrestling is also popular in the United States, although this professional type of wrestling is viewed as an entertainment spectacle rather than a sport.
Olympic Wrestling
Freestyle Wrestling
The rules of freestyle wrestling permit an athlete to use his entire body in competition, allowing a greater variety of holds than in the Greco-Roman style. Holds below the waist and the use of the legs are permitted. In the 1990s, the United States became one of the leading freestyle wrestling nations in the world, winning its first-ever team title at the 1993 Freestyle World Championships. Previously the sport was dominated for many years by the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Freestyle is the most popular style in the world, with more nations participating in this form of wrestling at the annual world championships than in Greco-Roman.

    History of the Olympics
The Olympics began in 776 B.C., in Olympia, to honor Zeus. Hippias of Elis, who wrote around 400 B.C., says that the first Games lasted only one day and had one event: the stade race. (Now, of course, the Olympics last five days and cover many events). The year 776 might not have been the first time the event was held, it could have been merely the first game held every fourth year after the peace treaty between Elis and Pisa. After all, the Eleans claim the Olympics were founded by their King Iphitos, after the Delphic Oracle told him to plant an olive tree from which we get victor's wreaths. Others say Pelops started the Olympics. While the stade race continues to be the premier event, Hippias of Elis says that the next race to be added was the double stade race, in the 14th Olympiad in 724 B.C. Greeks added the long distance race, the dolichos, in the next Olympiad of 720 B.C. Three Olympiads later, we added the

    Wrestling
Of the two styles of wrestling, "Greco-Roman" and "freestyle," Greco-Roman is the classic form, the style of wrestling practiced by the ancient Greeks. Although differences in techniques are numerous, the most obvious is that Greco-Roman is confined to upper-body grappling. Freestyle, by contrast, involves the entire body, and leg attacks are permitted. Europeans tend to favor the Greco-Roman classical style, while North America's best wrestlers are attracted to the freestyle. United States collegiate wrestling, for example, is very similar to international freestyle. Today, the training and techniques of each style are so specialized that most wrestlers concentrate on one style or the other.

Since then, the number of athletes, nations represented and the variety of spots have increased, with over 10,000 competitors from 199 countries participating in the 2000 Games in Sydney Australia. Salt Lake City Winter sports were added the Olympic Games as early as 1908 with figure skating. Ice hockey debuted in 1920.
