About

VIf the Olympic Games are a history of mankind, wrestling is the prologue. When the ancient Games of the Olympiad were born, wrestling already was an ancient game. Widely recognised as the world's oldest competitive sport, wrestling appeared in a series of Egyptian wall paintings as many as 5000 years ago. When the Games began in 776 BC, more than two millenniums later, it included wrestling, and, in the years that followed, wrestling featured as the main event. The sport would return in a similar role when the Olympic Games returned after a 1500-year absence in 1896. Organisers, seeking direct links to ancient times, found a natural in the sport that had enjoyed popularity across much of the ancient world, from Greece, Assyria and Babylon to India, China and Japan. They resurrected Greco-Roman wrestling, a style they believed to be an exact carryover from the Greek and Roman wrestlers of old.

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

History of the Ancient Olympics Held in Olympia, Greece, every four years from somewhere around 776 B.C. they initially consisted of a one day, one event running race, covering the length of the stadium (about 190m). Over time, the event was extended to 5 days and comprised four running events (including one in armour), combat sports, a chariot race and a pentathlon (which consisted of long jump, javelin, discus, sprint and wrestling). Interestingly enough, some non-sporting events were also introduced, including a trumpeting contest. Competitors had to be free-born Greek males, who, from 750 B.C. competed in the nude (prior to that they wore shorts-like garments). Women and slaves were forbidden, under threat of death, to even attend the Olympic games, although it was possible for a woman to win an Olympic event - In the chariot race, the crown of wild olive leaves was awarded to the owner of the horses and not the drivers, hence Belistike (a woman) of Macedonia won the two-horse chariot race in 268 B.C. History of the Modern Olympics The modern Olympic Games history has been a turbulent one, disrupted by two world wars, boycotts and terrorist attacks.

The Grand Olympic
by Steve In every sport there are some places that are sacred. Where you can still see and hear the ghosts of the legends that were once there. Other sports have their Yankee Stadiums, their Fenway Parks, and their Soldier Fields. Places where your grandparents cheered their heroes, and your parents cheered theirs. And where today, you too can sit in the same seat the generations before you have felt joy and depression. Where great battles that have become more legend than fact took occurred. Every sport has its legendary arenas where the echoes of the past can still be heard. Pro-wrestling has the Grand Olympic Auditorium. Built in 1924 it has sat squat on the corner of 18th and Grand in central L.A. ever since. Originally, the Olympic seated 15,300, believed to be the largest structure ever built in this country expressly for boxing. The grand opening of the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on August 5, 1925 was a major media event, attended by such celebrities as Jack Dempsey and Rudolph Valentino. Wrestling began to make its mark in the history of the Olympic when in 1932 boxing, weightlifting, and wrestling events for the Olympic Games were held there. Little did anyone know at the time what a true Mecca for professional wrestling the Olympic Auditorium would become.

In preparation Wrestling has been popular throughout recorded history. Origins of the sport can be traced back 15,000 years to cave drawings in France. At a time when every single day of life was an exploit in itself, wrestling was used in attack and defense, in hunting but also in determining the seniority and leadership with given social groups. Early Egyptian and Babylonian wall paintings depict wrestlers using most of the holds known to the present-day sport. In ancient Greece , wrestling occupied a prominent place in legend and literature; wrestling competition, brutal in many aspects, was the supreme contest of the Olympic Games . For detailed accounts of wrestling through the ages, along with other martial arts see Chronological history Martial Arts Origins or European Martial Arts History

I n the mid 70's, Art Martori joined forces with Tom Dubin to establish the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club. Through the continuous support of Mr. Martori, the Sunkist Kids began to implement its mission, which is to assist elite athletes in becoming Olympic and World Champions. In the beginning, the Sunkist Kids faced the enormous challenge of competing with elite athletes in the World and Olympic arena, but gradually champions began to emerge.
Over the past 25 years, the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club has produced more Olympic, World and U.S. National Champions than any other elite wrestling club in the United States. To date, the Sunkist Kids have 55 Olympic and World Medals, and 164 National Champions. Their success was primarily due to a top of the line coaching staff, dedicated athletes, devoted volunteers from behind the scenes, and financial resources.
In the History of Achievements section, the Sunkist Kids illustrate their international and national level accomplishments. Their athletes have competed in the Olympic Games, the Goodwill Games, the World Championships, the Pan American Games, the U.S. Open National Championships, and a variety of International tournaments all over the world. While viewing the accomplishments of the Sunkist Kids, you will discover why they are considered the most elite wrestling club in the world.

History of the Olympic Games
776 B.C.
While exact origin is unknown, the Ancient Olympic Games were held in a sacred valley at Olympia in Elis near the western coast of Greece and the earliest recorded Olympic competition was in 776 B.C. So important were these contests that time was measured by the four-year interval between the Games; the term"Olympiad"describing this period. It is a well established fact that religious festivals in honor of Olympian Zeus had been observed in the sacred valley for several centuries previous to that remote date. The Greek Games were celebrated in the belief that the spirits of the dead were gratified by such spectacles as delighted them during their earthly life. During the Homeric age, these festivals were simply sacrifices followed by games at the tomb or before the funeral pyre. Gradually they grew into religious festivals observed by an entire community and celebrated near the shrine of the god in whose honor they were instituted. The idea then developed that the gods themselves were present but invisible and delighted in the services and the contests. Later these festivals lost their local character and became Pan-Hellenic. Four of these festivals, Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian, had attracted world wide attention but the one held at Olympia was by far the most important consecrated to the Olympian Zeus. The Olympic Games became the greatest festival of a mighty nation. Once every four years trading was suspended, the continuously warring states and the fighting tribes laid down their arms, and all of the people went forth in peace to pay tribute to the manhood of its nation.

Jim Lucas Jim's wrestling career commenced as a Freshman in high school where he was a lowly fourth string on a lowly ranked team. Within two years, Jim became a highly ranked wrestler in California making two US Junior teams. He culminated his high school career by placing 4th in the CIF State Championships in 1970. He went on to wrestle at top 20 Division I powerhouse San Jose State making All-PCAA honors in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Between 1971 and 1975 Jim was on four US dual match teams competing against premier teams from Japan, Russian, Bulgaria and Germany. During this time Jim defeated three Olympic champions. Jim took a 20 year hiatus from wrestling but when his then 6th grade son went out for the team there was no coach. Jim took the reins of the team and coached them to three consecutive runner up placings in the highly competitive Coast County Athletic League in Santa Cruz. Jim also started wrestling again during this time. He won a few local tournaments going against competitors half his age. He placed 2nd at the AAU Masters Grand Nationals in 1997, and placed in the top three of the USA Wrestling Veterans National Championships from 1998 - 2001. Jim also placed in the top ten at the Veterans World Championships during that same timeframe. Jim is the only veterans wrestler from California to have made All-America five years running. Jim is now coaching at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz where his team recently captured its first league championship in school history with a record nine wrestlers qualifying for the Central Coast Sectional Championships.

The History of the Olympic Games
The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia in 776 BC. Some people have thought that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. (Olympia is in Greece) The only event held at the first Olympics was the stadium footrace. The Olympics were important to the Ancient Greeks. The only event in the first 13 games was a running race of 192 meters. Archologists have traced the founding of the Olympic games to King Iphitos, who planted the olive tree from which the wreaths for the winners were cut. Olympic Games were held in the valley of Olympia in Greece every four years for almost 1200 years. Inspired by the ancient Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin started the modern Olympic Games in 1896. They attracted about 245 athletes (ALL MEN) in 43 events. At the Sydney 2000 Games, more than 10,000 athletes will take part in 300 events. The Olympic Movement has survived wars, and terrorism to become a symbol of the ability of the people of all nations to come together in peace and friendship. The Ancient Olympic Games, honored Zeus, the king of the gods.
In 708 B.C., wrestling and the pentathlon were added. The pentathlon was jumping, running, discus throw, the javelin throw, and wrestling all together. Boxing was added in 688 B.C., and the four-horse chariot race was added in 680 B.C. Horse racing was added in 648 B.C. Some unusual events included in the Olympics were a race in armour, a chariot race called the apene in which two mules pulled the chariot, and a competition for trumpeters.
