Olympic meddling
Salé and Pelletier The story of pairs figure skaters Jamie Salé and David Pelletier is now officially a part of the sometimes strange and unusual history of the Olympic Games.
Here's a look back at some other medals that were won under less-than-normal circumstances.
The never-ending wrestling match (well almost) When:

What: Final Placings: 2. Anders Ahlgren (Sweden) 4. August Rajala (Finland) Better 71 years late than never When: Where: Stockholm, Sweden What: The Decathlon and the Pentathlon Jim Thorpe of the United States won the gold in both events. But the medals were revoked and his name was removed from the results when it was discovered that he had received a small payment for playing minor league baseball in 1909 and 1910, therefore violating the amateur status regulations. The International Olympic Committee gave the medals back to his family in 1983.

http://www.koalaexpress.com.au/olympics.htm
The Greek athletic games, otherwise commonly recognized as the Panhellenic Games, were an integral part of Greek life. They combined religion, sport, and music into extravagant festivals involving peoples throughout Mediterranean. Not only did they attract thousands of participants and spectators to their venues, but they also promoted solidarity among the various Greek city-states. By the Classical period, their influence was felt throughout Greece. There were four main games: the Olympic Games, Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games. The games at Olympia were the oldest and most famous of these. They all began quite humbly as religious ceremonies. While the games had a small religious aspect throughout their history, this role diminished as time progressed. Mythological evidence suggests that the athletic events originally served as entertainment for humans and gods and were loosely associated with sacrificial offerings. At first they were purely local events most likely spanning two or three days, consisting only of dancing, running, and wrestling. The centrepiece of every Olympics is the track and field stadium. Stadium Australia has built the largest Olympic arena in history with 110,000 spectators able to see the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field program and the final of the men's soccer tournament. Under an agreement brokered by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, the majority of the cost of the $A615 million stadium is being borne by the private sector with the NSW public having ultimate ownership of the venue. Stadium Australia has already hosted several world-class events including top-flight rugby league and union, American NFL and the FIFA All Stars.

Olympic History: Swimming
There is no exact date for when swimming was invented, but there is evidence dating the sport back for centuries. Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Saturday, September 30
SLAY SLAIN Germany’s Alexander Leipold won his country’s first freestyle wrestling Olympic gold for 40 years amid bad blood and accusations. The 31-year-old outpointed Brandon Slay of the United States to win his first Olympic medal in his fourth Games. Leipold was rarely in any danger in the under76 kg final and steadily stacked up the points as his opponent struggled to make any impression. The German won 4-0 and performed a cart-wheel followed by a back-flip to celebrate his win. "This is my greatest victory," he said. "This is a hard weight category with many champions." The German picked up a huge black eye for his troubles, but it did not bother him. "I don’t want to win a beauty pageant. I wanted the gold medal and that’s why I’m here," he said. Slay took the defeat badly, refusing to shake either his opponent’s or the referee’s hand at the end. He said later: "This is the worst I’ve ever felt in my life after a loss. I don’t believe it was fair. I wasn’t treated fairly by the officials. I went out there and gave it my all but the match was out of my hands." Slay also accused the German of“whingeing like a crying baby”, adding: "He just kept acting to the officials to get the points."
