'if I have a niggling question about correct spelling or meaning, my first port of call is more often the Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors 'an essential working tool for every working writer' There are some books that copy editors (two words, one word in US) and proofreaders (one word, but sometimes hyphenated esp. as verb) keep by them at all times. A good comprehensive dictionary is a must, a style guide or two is always useful, as is an encyclopedia ( but use -paed- in quoting titles where that spelling was followed), a thesaurus, and Brewer’s Phrase and Fable , though I tend to read this when I’m bored with what I’m doing. But if I have a niggling question about correct spelling or meaning, my first port of call is more often the Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors which is nothing less than a compendious (comprehensive but fairly brief) assembly of all kinds of information.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEWSPAPER MORE VISUALLY INVITING - AND MORE COMPREHENSIVE FOR THE READER
This is part of a series of original essays relating to newspaper design, training and management, based on e-mail questions sent in by inquisitive visitors to my web sites. It is partly based on two workshops conducted the weekend of April 25-28, 1998, in Orange County, Calif., for the National Writers Workshops and for the Society of Business Editors and Writers.
If you have a question or comment on these topics, send it to design@ronreason.com at any time. I'll respond as soon as possible, and consider using your question in a future web posting.

In my experience, writers who invited the graphics, photo and design staffs in to the reporting process early on almost always got the best display for their work.

A Question of Style by Dave West [First published on January 19, 2001] Toward or towards? Till or until? Around 1000 or about 1000? Above 100 people or more than 100 people? Most publications have their own guidelines covering these and literally thousands of other seemingly tiny matters of style, or require their writers and copy editors to be familiar with, and follow, a particular stylebook, such as The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual. In-house staff are expected to know and follow the house rules, and the publication's copy editors meticulously peruse all supplied copy and change it to meet the publication's requirements.

Writers and editors communicate through the written word. Writers and editors generally fall into one of three categories. Writers and authors develop original fiction and nonfiction for books, magazines and trade journals, newspapers, online publications, company newsletters, radio and television broadcasts, motion pictures, and advertisements. Technical writers develop scientific or technical materials, such as scientific and medical reports, equipment manuals, appendices, or operating and maintenance instructions. They also may assist in layout work. Editors select and prepare material for publication or broadcast and review and prepare a writer’s work for publication or dissemination. Merv Aubespin admits that he never spent a minute as a copy editor in his nearly 35-year journalism career at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky.
However, the recently retired associate editor has become one of the biggest supporters of copy editors. He's considered the godfather of the American Copy Editors Society and has an ACES scholarship named after him. And he's outspoken about the need for copy editors in newsrooms.
"You do something important besides process information," Aubespin said at "The New AGE of Copy Editing" workshop in St. Louis. "You take the role of being the last one in the line before your paper ends up on my doorstep or my neighbor's doorstep.
