Novice and seasoned native writers meet for festival
Last Updated 2003-02-14 00:00:00.0 Bob Steele, The Arts Report WINDSOR - Novice and seasoned native writers from across Canada will showcase their skills at a weekend festival in Windsor. The University of Windsor Aboriginal Writers Festival is designed to advance the profile of some of the country's more established native writers, while encouraging up-and-coming talent. "One of the problems I run into with writing aboriginal poetry is that English professors can critique for grammatical structure. But a lot of the aboriginal ideology behind it - they can't really advise me on," said Andrew Bomberry, a creative writing student at the university. "That's one of the advantages of having aboriginal writers. It's really helped me to direct my poetry and give it more of a voice," he said. Several successful aboriginal writers are taking part in the event. Filmmaker and author Drew Hayden Taylor said aboriginal storytelling may have began orally but today's writers must find the right voice for the times. "We're going from telling stories around the campfire to telling stories around the stage and around television. The format has changed but not the spirit of the story," he said.

Coastal town booked out as writers meet to talk shop
By Susan Wyndham August 3 2002 The writers may keep nicking off to have a surf or to watch the dolphins, but they come back fired up about injustice, poverty and the future of Australia. The lushness of the setting - in open tents under a blue sky, with waves crashing nearby - only intensifies the discussions at the Byron Bay Writers Festival. The level of political debate on the first day surprised even Don Watson, who was there to talk about his Paul Keating book Recollections of a Bleeding Heart Festival director Jill Eddington agreed. "There's a search at the moment for political context," she said. "People want answers and they do that through books and reading. I pushed it a bit, but the writers are taking it further." At the opening dinner, Hilary McPhee's speech on the need for public conversations was sandwiched between local comedians Mandy Nolan and Sandy Gandhi and a fire dancer. "We don't need entertaining," said a publisher, hungry for more McPhee anger. ");document.write("

What strange power forces readers to meet writers?
May 27 2002 And what makes writers shut down their word processors to face the public at festivals? Don Anderson offers some answers. It is a truth universally acknowledged that all the woes of the world are caused by people straying beyond their front doors. We must, as Voltaire's Candide observed, "first cultivate our own garden". Candide's 18th-century garden was not, of course, overgrown with gardening books, that blight of modern bookselling. Let us reformulate. Most of the woes of the world are caused by people straying beyond the confines of their libraries. A library, as Viscount Samuel observed, is thought in cold storage, and a cold dry light illuminates far better than the heat of the press of the public. Yet people insist on going to Writers' Festivals, or readers' festivals as they surely by force of numbers are. Thirty-four thousand of them milled about at last year's Sydney Writers' Festival. Doubtless more will be there this week. Why do they not stay at home and read a book? Dark thought: are writers' festivals substitutes for reading? What of the writers? Did Jonathan Swift attend writers' festivals? Can we imagine him reading

When Indian writers meet
Khushwant Singh I
have attended many writers’ conferences in different parts of the world: Philippines, England, Scotland, the USA and India. I got very little out of meeting eminent authors, most of them full of self-esteem. But invariably I succeeded in befriending one or two and continued corresponding with them. Fifty years ago in Manila I got to know Sional Jose. Last month he sent me his latest novel through his son visiting India. In Leeds I met Kavi Jasimuddin of Bangladesh. I visited him in his home Palasbari in Dhaka; his daughter Hasna and her husband Maudud visit me whenever they are in Delhi. In Hawaii I spent seven days with R.K. Narayan and he often dropped in on me when in Delhi. That’s about it. I wasn’t very eager to attend the SAARC Writers Conference in Delhi organised by Ajit Cour of the Academy of Fine Arts and Literature. Anyone who knows Ajit knows she never takes ‘no’ for an answer. She managed to get President R.K. Narayanan, Vice-President Krishan Kant, Cabinet Ministers Jaswant Singh, Jagmohan, three ex- Prime Ministers and a host of Indian litterateurs besides writers and poets from all the countries including the ravishing debutante Manjushree Thapa from Nepal and my friend Minoo Bhandara (brother of the novelist Bapsi Sidhwa) from Pakistan.

dated August 2, 1951: Indian writers meet in Moscow
Tass reported in London that a meeting between Indian and Soviet writers was held in Moscow on July 29. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, India's Ambassador to Russia was a distinguished guest. About 1,000 writers, students, and others attended the meeting in the Trade Union House. The leader of the Indian group, poet Harindranath Chattopadhyaya, said the best practitioners of Indian literature and art had helped the Indian nation and her people in the struggle to become free from foreign rule. He said ``now, the attention of progressive Indian writers and artists is focussed on the struggle for peace. We create plays, poems, songs, pictures, and sculptures calling on people everywhere to fight against war-mongers.'' Clenched Fist Society of Pakistan On August 1, in Lahore, was inaugurated what was to be known as the ``Clenched Fist Society'', in consequence of a public meeting addressed in July by Pakistan's Prime Minister, Liaqat Ali Khan. The Prime Minister had said in Karachi that the symbol of Pakistan henceforth would be a clenched mailed fist. That announcement was welcomed by enthusiastic cries from the crowd for Pakistan to conduct `jehad' to conquer Kashmir along with India, and Palestine. PTI reported that the Lahore meeting had been attended by psychologists, scientists, philosophers, artists, authors, and others. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, Director, Institute of Chemical Technology, Punjab (Pakistan) University, who delivered the inaugural address of the C.F. Society, said that one of its principal objectives would be ``discussion of the technicalities, philosophy, and moral aspects, of the clenched fist.''
