On Writing
Simpleness is another aesthetic preference, not an information display strategy, not a guide to clarity. What we seek instead is a rich texture of data, a comparative context, an understanding of complexity revealed with an economy of means.
Edward R. Tufte, Envisioning Information, Graphics Press 1990 OK, so Professor Tufte is writing about the graphical display of information, such as in a chart or graph or a drawing of some sort intended to display (drum roll) information. Isn't that what a novel is? Words are data. If you can do what Professor Tufte has so compellingly suggested, you can write a novel that gets published.
But that's not easy! Nope, it sure ain't.
If it were easy, getting published would be no big deal.

    Writing Romance - Preface
The love relationship between a man and a woman is one of the most important in adult life. Because it's so crucial to our lives, romantic love features in almost all our fiction, and in ballads, poetry, movies, and dreams. Half of all paperbacks sold are romance novels, stories in which hero and heroine struggle to overcome the obstacles to romantic love. Because people care about love, they want to read about it, and write about it. I read the chaste romances of the 1950s as a lonely child, fantasizing a romantic hero who would cherish me. I fantasized myself writing a romance novel, too, and when a virus kept me in bed for a month at the age of twelve, I started writing my first love story. It foundered on page fifty, but I never forgot the excitement of bringing characters to life. I grew up, married and had children, but the urge to write never left. I read everything—romances, mysteries, and science fiction. I fantasized different endings to the books I read, and whenever I couldn’t find anything good to read, the urge to write my own book would return. I wrote three unpublished novels while living on a lighthouse when my children were babies. After leaving the lighthouse, I wrote articles for local newspapers and regional magazines, then commentaries for CBC radio. Because that didn’t pay well, I became an accountant and a college instructor, but still fantasized myself a novelist.

    Laurey Bright
    About Daphne/Laurey
Daphne decided to be a writer when she was eight years old and won her first literary prize for a school essay. Since then she has won other literary prizes both in her native New Zealand and other countries. These include the prestigious Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award. As well as short stories she has written poetry, articles and novels. Her first short story was published when she was sixteen and she's been writing and publishing ever since. She is best known for her (50+) contemporary romantic novels written as Daphne Clair and Laurey Bright, with millions of readers worldwide, but has also written regency romances and a fat historical novel. She lives and works in the 'winterless north' of New Zealand with her Netherlands-born husband, where they run a retreat for working writers, and with Robyn Donald Daphne conducts romance writing workshops for aspiring writers. A bit of a workaholic, Daphne occasionally lifts her head from the word processor and remembers there is something out there called The World. At these times she likes to have a barbecue with friends or find a nice lonely beach and walk on it with her husband. Sometimes she even takes a plane and sees a bit more of The World on the way to a writers' conference.

Tips and "inside information" for aspiring authors are shown in blue italics. Late August, 2001 I typed, "The End" on the last page of the final draft of my manuscript. Some people say that's unprofessional. Of course the editor will have to strike it, because those words won't be printed in the book. But I needed to see them on my last page. It was my reward for accomplishing what I had set out to do. August 31, 2001 I sent a query letter with a synopsis to the publisher I was targeting. I had been writing with "Love Inspired" in mind, so I had nailed the word-count and the tone for that line. (Don't bother querying an editor unless you're sure what you've written will fit her line.) Also, it's very important for an unpublished writer to have a complete manuscript ready to go when she queries. Often the editor will request only a "partial" (usually meaning the first three chapters), but if she wants the "full," you'd better be able to zap it back to her before she loses interest. (It's okay to take 2-3 weeks to do a final polish, but I wouldn't wait any longer.) September 20, 2001

    1. Ingredients of a Successful
    Romance Novel
    a. Category or single-title? Romance novels can be divided into two types according to how they are published.
  • Category Romances Category romances are marketed monthly under imprints readers have learned to associate with romance—Harlequin Presents, Bantam Loveswept, Silhouette Special Edition. Each book bearing the same imprint carries a distinctive cover design its readers recognize. Under each imprint or "line," the publisher issues a fixed number of titles each month. To reduce costs, all books in the line have a fixed page length. Once printed, they are marketed in a block. Each store selling the line agrees to accept a fixed quantity of each title monthly. In addition, many category romance lines are also marketed by publisher book clubs. Readers have certain expectations of category romances: that they will be romantic, have a happy ending, and that the theme will be empowering. When a new writer sells to a category market, she has the advantage that the book will be delivered to every drug store, grocery store and bookstore selling her category line, and also to book club subscribers. Because of this large exposure, the new writer may earn good money writing her first category romance. As her name becomes better known, readers will also recognize her name on the shelves and she can hope sales will increase. For more information about specific categories and their publishers, see
