    Certification
A hundred years ago a person could enter the teaching profession with a relatively small amount of preparation. This is no longer true.
Entering the teaching profession has required increasingly greater training over the years. Teaching today requires better preparation because of the knowledge explosion and because more is now known about how children learn.
Today, virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate as well. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education.
STATE OF MICHIGAN In the state of Michigan the student who meets these requirements receives the Provisional teaching certificate, either elementary or secondary, which is valid for six years. The elementary certificate qualifies him to teach kindergarten through the fifth grade and his major and /or minor in grades 6-8 (exceptions are available for smaller schools). The secondary certificate qualifies him to teach the seventh through the twelfth grades. During the six year period following graduation, the new teacher should complete three years of actual teaching and a minimum of eighteen semester hours of course work in a planned program of study in college or in graduate school to receive a PROFESSIONAL certificate.

    WYOMING TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Wyoming Teacher Education Program is one of the premier teacher preparation programs in the United States. The National Education Association has selected our program as a model for teacher education programs across the country. We are nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
Why is our program so effective? We believe that teachers are best trained by being in a public school classroom working with school age children. In conjunction with required college course work, you will spend a great deal of time with mentor teachers and young students.
There are three major phases in our teacher education program. Phase I begins in the sophomore year. In the Becoming a Teacher course, you will begin working in the public schools. In Phase II you will be introduced to unit plans and lesson plans, allowing you to teach in a classroom of young people. Prior to Phase II, you will

Back to Home ... Living Saturday, Apr 12, 2003 Education Posted on Mon, Oct. 07, 2002 Teacher certification pushed National board has approved thousands of applicants, but few in Pa. or N.J. take part. By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.
