Culture Clash in Yemen
April 10, 2002
(CBS)
The U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Edmund Hull (CBS)
CONNECTIONS TO TERROR The United States has long accused Yemen of being a haven for terrorists. Like the Afghanistan of last summer, it is a place where President Bush says al-Qaeda is alive and well, and possibly plotting new attacks against Americans. Connections to terrorism keep coming up. Here are just a few:
(CBS) This week, the Pentagon announced that as many as 150 American special forces are on their way to Yemen to train Yemen’s army to capture terrorists. The U.S. has long accused Yemen of being a haven for terrorists and when President Bush challenged world leaders to be either with the United States or with the terrorists, Yemen vowed to weed out al-Qaida once and for all.
But, as Correspondent Vicki Mabrey found when she went there, it won’t be easy.
The U.S. Embassy in Yemen is on the front line of the war on terrorism. It’s one of the most heavily-defended embassies in the world, for good reason.

Yemen Culture The state religion of Yemen is Islam. The essence of Islam is the belief that there is only one God, and that it is the people's duty to believe in and serve Him in the manner that is laid out in the Quran. In Arabic, islam means submission and a muslim is one who submits to God's will. Yemeni Muslims are mainly divided betwen the Shafia Sunni sect and the Zaydi Shiia sect. Qat chow-downs are the oil that lubricates Yemen's political wheels, and if you're not in on them you're out in the cold. Qat chews are spontaneous afternoon house parties where Yemeni men gather to chew the leaves of the qat plant and have a bit of a gossip. If you want to join in, you'll have to be invited (this shouldn't be hard if you're a guy - Yemeni men will often stop you and ask 'do you chew?') and you should bring your own leaves - you can pick up a bunch in most markets. Qat is a mild stimulant, chemically unlike any other drug. It will probably make you lively and chatty, although after a while you'll probably become mellow and contemplative. It's non-addictive and has no major side-effects, although long term use can give you chronic constipation. Yemeni architecture is unique. Buildings in the highlands are particularly striking - multistorey tower houses made from stone, brick or mud which wouldn't look out of place in a northern England housing development. Some of these houses are five or six stories high, with an extended family living in each house. The bottom floor is for animals, the next floor up is the

Situated in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula, the Republic of Yemen has considerable variation in its physical landscape and climatic conditions, ranging from the Rub al-Khali (or "Empty Quarter") desert region, to fertile mountains and plateaus fed by twice-yearly monsoons. Yemen's remarkable architecture including palaces, mosques, and multi-storied mud and brick houses is one of the country's most celebrated characteristics. The strait of Bab el Mandeb, located at Yemen's southwestern tip, links the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. The country's ancient kingdoms, built on the spice and incense trades, used its strategic ports in concert with overland camel caravans to give Yemen a historically important role in Middle Eastern trade. The coastal town of Al Mukha became a major force in the coffee trade, and it is from there that the word "mocha" was derived and applied to coffee.

"Yemen. The Land of the Queen of Sheba" The exhibition is dedicated to the culture of Yemen and covers the period from prehistoric times to the 6th century AD. For a period of approximately 10,000 years, the land of Yemen united the cultures that developed in the ancient Near East. It was there that hunting was gradually replaced by stock-raising and agriculture, so that prehistoric man was settled, and the first irrigation systems were created, thus allowing for the foundation of settlements, now revealed by the extensive cemeteries, a source of information for an era that still remains in the dark. In the 2nd millennium BC, ancient Yemen, under the influence of the rest of Near East, underwent serious cultural and demographic changes. New populations settled in this part of Arabia, who founded the civilization of Western Arabia.
The Hellenic Ministry of Culture participates with an exhibit of the Archaeological Museum of Delos, which bears a bilingual inscription in the Greek and Arabic language.

A Symposium June 6-7, 2003
The Ambassador of Yemen to the United States, in cooperation with the Freer Gallery of Art, the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, and the U.S. Embassy in Sana'a, will host a two-day symposium on the cultural heritage of Yemen at the Meyer Auditorium of the Freer Gallery of Art, Friday June 6th and Saturday June 7th, 2003 One of the objectives of the Symposium is to introduce Yemen and its rich culture to the U.S. public, and hence lead to a better understanding of the people and culture of Yemen. Since the tragic attacks of September 11th, unfortunate stereotypes about Yemen and the larger region have been reinforced for the U.S. public. The Symposium will therefore be an opportunity to foster and improve existing dialogue, exchange, and cooperation between the United States and Yemen, especially through culture, education, and development programs. The Symposium will bring together experts on Yemen in fields such as architecture, archeology, crafts, restoration, history, music, and development cooperation from different parts of the world including Yemen, the U.S., Canada, France, and Germany. They will discuss their contribution to the cultural landscape of Yemen and, they will present ideas on how to strengthen international collaboration in their specific fields.

Folk Customs from Around the World
Folk customs (a.k.a. traditional customs) are developed and practiced primarily by small, homogeneous groups living in more isolated rural areas. Social customs such as the provision of clothing, shelter, transportation and food have evolved differently in different areas of the world because natural resources vary widely from place to place. Folk customs reflect the benefits and constraints of each group's environment, and through cultural evolution each generation has left its unique imprint on the cultural landscape Guatemala Guatemala Samoa Spain China China Kazakhstan Uzbekistan Uzbekistan Syria Yemen Jordan Morocco Jordan Morocco Morocco Canada Syria Syria Yemen Syria Nebraska Dominican Republic Yemen Jordan Poland Mexico Egypt Armenia South Korea e Guatemala China Ecuador Colombia Mexico Morocco Morocco Nicaragua Portugal Georgia Syria Syria China Syria Oklahoma Jordan Egypt Peru Peru Hawaii Uzbekistan Uzbekistan Yemen Syria To view click on any photograph
