Newspapers are filled with the names of many foreign countries, but many American youngsters need help in locating Afghanistan and Iraq, the two countries mentioned on a daily basis. In a recent international geographic literacy survey of young people in the United States and eight other countries - Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Sweden and Japan - the students were asked 56 questions about geography and current events. The 300 Americans averaged 23 correct answers or a grade of “D.” None of the countries made an “A,” which required average scores of 42 correct answers or more on the total of 56 questions. Sweden’s students averaged 40 correct answers and Mexico was last with an average score of 21. Eighteen or below was a failing grade. Our students passed by the slimmest of margins. We need to pay attention to this weakness and start doing something now. Parents can encourage an interest in geography with questions, playing games, informal discussions and encouraging creative activities at home. Why not make geography a family project for 2003? It will give the adults a refresher course in geography along with motivating youngsters to broaden their knowledge of the world. The following suggestions could get you started. Add more activities later.
