The reputed home of the Queen of Sheba, Yemen has been at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Asia for thousands of years thanks to its key position on the ancient spice routes.
The Romans knew this fertile and wealthy country as Arabia Felix, in contrast to the relatively barren Arabia Deserta to the north. And today it maintains its own distinct character. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA The modern Republic of Yemen came into being in 1990 when traditionalist North Yemen and Marxist South Yemen merged after years of border wars and skirmishes. But the peace broke down in 1994. A brief civil war ended in defeat for separatist southerners and the survival of the unified Yemen. Since unification the country has been modernising and opening up to the outside world, but Yemen still maintains much of its tribal character and old ways. People wear traditional dress and the custom of eating the narcotic plant Qat in the afternoons is still widely observed. The country has attracted the curiosity of a growing number of tourists. Several foreigners have been kidnapped by groups making various demands on the authorities.

A Symposium June 6-7, 2003
The Ambassador of Yemen to the United States, in cooperation with the Freer Gallery of Art, the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, and the U.S. Embassy in Sana'a, will host a two-day symposium on the cultural heritage of Yemen at the Meyer Auditorium of the Freer Gallery of Art, Friday June 6th and Saturday June 7th, 2003 One of the objectives of the Symposium is to introduce Yemen and its rich culture to the U.S. public, and hence lead to a better understanding of the people and culture of Yemen. Since the tragic attacks of September 11th, unfortunate stereotypes about Yemen and the larger region have been reinforced for the U.S. public. The Symposium will therefore be an opportunity to foster and improve existing dialogue, exchange, and cooperation between the United States and Yemen, especially through culture, education, and development programs. The Symposium will bring together experts on Yemen in fields such as architecture, archeology, crafts, restoration, history, music, and development cooperation from different parts of the world including Yemen, the U.S., Canada, France, and Germany. They will discuss their contribution to the cultural landscape of Yemen and, they will present ideas on how to strengthen international collaboration in their specific fields.

Country Info Yemen Introduction Yemen General Data Yemen Maps Yemen Culture ... Yemen Time and Date Yemen Government Back to Top The former states of North Yemen and South Yemen, which merged in 1990, had sharply contrasting political systems. North Yemen was a republic, governed under a provisional constitution dating from the early 1970s. Although a succession of bodies (the Consultative Assembly, the Consultative Council, the People's Constituent Assembly, and the General People's Congress) carried out some of the functions of a legislature, they exercised little real power until the 1980s. Until that time, policy making remained in the hands of a technocratic elite that worked closely with a relatively progressive military elite. South Yemen, on the other hand, had an avowedly Marxist government, and the political system and economy reflected many of the goals and principles of Marxism.

Country Info Yemen Introduction Yemen General Data Yemen Maps Yemen Culture ... Yemen Time and Date Yemen Economy Back to Top Yemen’s economy was based on subsistence agriculture and was largely self-sufficient. However, with the import of cheap goods from abroad, North Yemen moved quickly from self-sufficiency to dependence after 1960, as the south had done decades earlier. During the 1970s and 1980s North Yemen came to rely heavily on Saudi Arabia, the Arab Gulf states, and to a lesser extent, the western industrial countries for financial and other assistance, while South Yemen became equally dependent on the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and other Communist countries. Oil and natural gas, discovered near Shabwah in the former South Yemen in 1983 and near Ma'rib in the north the following year, now generate a major portion of the national income. Exploration and development by American, Korean, Japanese, and other foreign companies continues. A pipeline carries northern Yemen's oil to the Red Sea coast, and a similar line serving the southern region by way of Little Aden was under construction in the early 1990s. Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Arab world, reported strong growth in the mid-1990s with the onset of oil production, but was harmed by low oil prices in 1998. Yemen has embarked on an IMF-supported structural adjustment program designed to modernize and streamline the economy, which has led to foreign debt relief and restructuring. Aided by higher oil prices in 1999-2000, Yemen worked to maintain tight control over spending and implement additional components of the IMF program. A high population growth rate of nearly 3.4% and internal political dissension complicate the government's task.
