It is with profound sorrow that the Embassy of Yemen wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the American government, its people, the victims and their families. The Government of Yemen takes this matter very seriously. It has received the full attention of the highest levels of government, including the President who has personally visited the injured American sailors receiving medical treatment in Aden Hospital. In response to the situation, all available resources are being mobilized to ensure the injured receive proper medical attention. We swear we will make you suffer the same fate, destroying your buildings, turning your wives into widows and your children into orphans," the statement said. Egyptian newspapers reported Abdel Mottaleb was stabbed and shot to death outside a mosque in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on 22 July. The papers quoted Egypt's ambassador in Sanaa as saying that a Syrian national had killed the cleric. Egypt has charged Yemen and Sudan with harboring Muslim militants opposed to President Hosni Mubarak's government.
