History and Government
History: To the Romans, Yemen was Arabia Felix , whose mountains and fertile areas distinguished it from the barren desert of the rest of the Arabian peninsula. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Yemen came into the seventh century under the influence of Islam, which was then rapidly expanding throughout the region. It remained within the orbit of various regional powers until, in the 15th century, it became a flashpoint in the struggle between the Egyptians and the Ottoman Empire. Its strategic location subsequently attracted European powers and, during the early 17th and early 19th centuries, there was a constant struggle for control between the Europeans and the Ottomans.
The development of trade routes to India and the Far East eventually made protection of the Suez sea route an imperative for the British, who occupied the port of Aden in 1839, as a staging post and military base. The Yemeni hinterland was, for the most part, under the loose control of the Ottoman Empire throughout the 19th century, until 1918, when the Imam Yahya took power in what became the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). Aden and its surroundings, meanwhile, were firmly established as a British colony. Yahya was assassinated in 1948 and his son Ahmed took over. From 1958-1961, the YAR was federated with Egypt and Syria in the United Arab States. Ahmed died in 1962 and an army coup led to civil war between Egypt-backed republicans and Saudi-backed royalists.

Contact us Book review A History of Modern Yemen by Paul Dresch Cambridge University Press, Having thoroughly enjoyed Dr Dresch’s previous, primarily anthropological book, Tribes, Government and History in Yemen (1989), I expected good things of his work on the modern country. I was not disappointed. This is an attractive and readable publication, with photographs, maps and other useful illustrations. Above all, it is well written and as appealing to the general reader as to the specialist academic. In some ways it could be described as an updated version of Robin Bidwell’s The Two Yemens (1983), but presentationally, organisationally and stylistically, I prefer Paul Dresch’s approach. Perhaps the most valuable feature of this excellent volume is Dresch’s account of the post-colonial period - especially when he carries on from where Bidwell stopped and explains how the two Yemens, neo-Marxist in the south, inherently conservative in the north (despite years of ‘republicanism’), finally merged. As a young political officer in the 1960s, I would have wagered my entire (albeit modest) gratuity against unity in my lifetime, dismissing the prospect as a chimera induced by fleeting anti-colonial sentiment rather than anything more substantial and enduring. The post-imperial road to scenes of crowds chanting on both sides of the former border: ‘ba’d al yawm ma’ad baramil’ (‘after today no more barrels’ i. e. concrete ftlled drums marking the frontier checkpoints) was a rocky one.

" The heritage of your father is worth more than, years of study"
    (Yemeni Proverb)
Hearing about the pre-Islamic history of Yemen, two things may come to mind: first, the jour-ney of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon of Israel ; and second, the name, "Arabia Felix" - happy Arabia, given to Yemen by the classical authors of Athens and Rome.
Old Testament records (Chronicles II/9 and Kings 1/10) describe, how the "Queen of the South" (as she is referred to in other places) traveled from the land of the Sabeans along the "Gold and Incense Road" to meet King Salomon in Jerusalem. According to the story, she brought along with her "a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones". But it is not only the Old Testament that mentions the Sabean civilization. The Koran adds some interesting aspects in Surat Saba (No. 34), the Sura on Sheba. In Surat an-Naml (the ant; No. 27) the hoopoe bird brings back news of Sheba and reports to Solomon: "I come to thee from Sheba with sure tidings. Lo! I found a woman ruling over them and she has been given abundance of all things, and hers is a mighty throne". It shall be explained later, how the records of the Holy Books can be explained.
The classical authors, though referring to a much later period, give a more detailed view into Arabia Felix. According to Hero-dotus (5th cent. BC): "Arabia is the only country which produces frankincense, myrrh, cassia and cinnamon ...... the trees bearing the frankincense are guarded by winged serpents of small size and various colors". Diodorus Siculus writes in the second half of the first century BC, that all of Arabia exhumes a most delicate fragrance; even the seamen passing by Arabia can smell the strong fragrance that gives health and vigor. He also mentioned gold mines so pure, that no smelting was necessary.

    A History of Modern Yemen
    by Paul Dresch
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000. 285 pp. $59.95 (paper, $19.95)
    Middle East Quarterly
    June 2001
Reviewed by Daniel Pipes Dresch, an Oxford lecturer, retells the twentieth-century history of Yemen with a rare panach, making the usually dry history of imams, strongmen, and backwardness nearly a pleasure to traverse. Typical of his style is a sly admission in the preface of his temptation to replace the publisher's dry-as-dust title with a more exotic Yemeni-style one ("The Camel Trotting Heavy Laded with News of Hadramawt, Sanaa and Aden"). Dresch a cultural anthropologist, shows a skilled hand at history, even as he lards it with anecdotes, poetry, and newspaper quotations.
His history goes lightly on themes, but if it has one, it would be how the borders invented by the imperial overlords a century back have acquired ever-more reality and emotional resonance with time. "Yemen," like "Scandinavia" or "Syria," was through the ages a geographic expression refering to a distinct cultural unit; like those other names, it did not have a specific political reality. "Much of Yemen's history through the twentieth century connects with efforts to form that state, which was finally established in 1990." When that unified policy did come into existence, Dresch judges it thus: "The state turns out to be much like other states. The country remains singular."

History Geography General info ... Useful tips History: The history of Yemen dates back to the Minaean (1200–650 B.C.) and Sabaean (750–115 B.C.) kingdoms. Ancient Yemen engaged in the lucrative myrrh and frankincense trade. It was invaded by the Romans (1st century A.D.) as well as the Ethiopians and Persians (6th century A.D.). In A.D. 628 it converted to Islam and in the 10th century came under the reign of the Rassite dynasty of the Zaidi sect, which remained involved in North Yemeni politics until 1962. The Ottoman Turks nominally occupied the area from 1538 to the decline of their empire in 1918. Imams ruled the northern portion of Yemen until 26 September 1962 revolution which established the republic. After a civil war until royalists were finally defeated in 1969.

The first written information about Yemen dates back to the era of Herodotus. Arabia Felix – The Happy Arabia – is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the world. A veritable treasure chest of old Arabian Culture and History ; a glorious past of 3000 years of civilization, Yemen is proud of being the country mentioned in the three divine Holy Books: The Torah, the Bible and the Koran.
For centuries, heavily laden caravans journeyed from the eastern most parts of Yemen to the Mediterranean. The treasured cargo of frankincense, the beguiling fragrance of the Orient. Kingdoms and powers came and went. During a time period of one a half millennia six kingdoms appeared in the antique South Arabia, overlapped and disappeared again: the Sabean Kingdom – famous because of the legendary Queen of Sheba and the ruins of Marib – is the most well-known and was the most powerful. Most important one’s are:
  • Maeen - the capital Qarnawa Sheba (Saba) – the capital Marib (1200BC – 260AD) Hadramout – the capital Shabwa (400BC – 220AD) Qataban – the capital Timna (400BC) Himyar Ausan (until 450BC)
