new internationalist issue 247 - September 1993 This ancient realm, rich with incense and alabaster and gold, gave the legendary Queen of Sheba the right to stand before King Solomon as his equal. Almost 3,000 years later, the Yemen is still a land of many gifts, including the independent spirit of its people. Yemen moved hesitantly out of the medieval period when it threw off despotism in North Yemen in 1962 and colonialism in South Yemen in 1967. But now, thanks to oil and unification, the momentum towards modernization has picked up dramatically. Yemen has climbed from being one of the world’s poorest countries to the middle-income bracket. Oil strikes on the border between North and South Yemen pushed forward a long-standing agenda for the unification of the two states. The collapse of Soviet-supported socialism in the south removed the ideological barrier. On 22 May 1990, North and South Yemen reunited as the Republic of Yemen, after a century and a half of artificial separation carved out by the Ottomans and British in the 1830s. Unification swept away a fiction of history and replaced it with a parcel of impracticalities. Two social norms now co-exist. In the south where socialism dismantled the strictures of Islam, women today go unveiled, hold jobs on an equal basis and alcohol is for sale. In the north, conservatism reigns and Islamic fundamentalism is on the upsurge. The traditional power base in the Zaydi north is resisting the headlong rush to secularism.

In the restful atmosphere of meeting rooms in private houses, hardworking Yemeni men gather during the afternoon break to chew qat and recount vivid local and family histories. ral histories are at least as much a matter of presentation as they are recitations of absolute truths. The presenter uses devices to add authenticity to his account, slant the circumstances to deliver a message, or invest events with renewed significance. I knew this intuitively but did not recognize the power of narrative performance until engaged in anthropological field research in 'Amran, Yemen. Until the early 1970s virtually all houses, government offices, and mosques were inside the medina, the high-walled, gated city. Just outside the walls were a smaller enclosed village and the market. The 1962 revolution and ensuing eight-year civil war that brought an end to North Yemen's theocratic rule ushered in many changes. This was obvious in the brisk pace with which homes, shops, and mosques were being built to accommodate new settlers and those relocating outside the old city. By 1978, when I began a nineteen-month stay there, the town's prerevolution population had doubled to about six thousand. The socioeconomic and political impacts of these changes were the focus of my research project. Traditional agriculture, modern commerce, and expatriate labor in the oil-rich Gulf states were the primary engines of the local economy. The workday was long and hard, but, as throughout the country, the grind of daily life was relieved by an afternoon break during which men gathered to chew qat. When chewed, the fresh, young, tender leaves of the qat shrub stimulate and depress, leaving the user with a sense of euphoria and a tendency toward introspection. Men spend three to four hours sitting, chewing, and chatting. The setting is ideal for recounting tales that contain, as do some styles of Yemeni poetry, commentaries on life. Rooms are often crowded with chewers, so it is easy for someone to take the stage and regale the assembly with messages intended to instruct as well as entertain. It was during these gatherings that I heard and reheard many stories.

From approximately 1,000 BC this region of the Southern Arabian Peninsula was ruled by three successive civilisations: Minean, Sabaean and Himyarite. These three kingdoms all depended for their wealth on the spice trade. Aromatics such as myrrh and frankincense were greatly prized in the ancient civilised world and were used as part of various rituals in many cultures, including Egyptian, Greek and Roman. In the 11th century BC, land routes through Arabia were greatly improved by using the camel as a beast of burden, and frankincense was carried from its production centre at Qana (now known as Bir Ali) to Gaza in Egypt. The camel caravans also carried gold and other precious goods, which arrived in Qana by sea from India. The chief incense traders were the Minaeans, who established their capital Karna (now known as Sadah), before they were superseded by the Sabaeans in 950 BC. The Sabaean capital was Marib, where a large temple was built. The mighty Sabaean civilization endured for about 14 centuries and was based not only on the spice trade, but also on agriculture. The impressive dam, built at Marib in the 8th century, provided irrigation for farmland and stood for over a millennium. Some Sabaean carved inscriptions from this period are still extant.
