I ntellect C harisma "How humans came to be the way we are is far less important than how we should act now to get out of the mess we have made for ourselves" (Goodall, 1999b, 2). Secondary English is a refereed journal that offers multimedia reviews, cutting edge research, and innovative activities about teaching English. We tend to publish articles that push the edge a little (or sometimes blow them to smithereens). The journal was created out of a sense of frustration with the traditionally dull approach to the teaching of English that permeates the field. The current obsession with assessing a common set of minimalistic competencies of teachers and students has the potential to bury the soul of teaching and learning beneath a rubble of checklists and prefab performance indicators. Our hope is that Secondary English will help refocus the teaching of English upon the development of ideas, intellect, humanism, and aesthetics.
