Unlike many girls who lose interest and confidence in science, girls in FIRST hold onto their dreams of becoming engineers, doctors, and astronauts. With a grant from the National Science Foundation, the FIRST program has created an informal setting for girls to engage in hands-on science at elementary and middle schools in the Oakland Unified School District.
