Arts Section
Why We're Here
The Yukon Arts Policy and Action Plan was ratified by cabinet in March 1997. The policy provides a framework for the Arts Section's mandate to "support and encourage the development of the visual, literary and performing arts in the Yukon." The Section accomplishes this through programs which enhance public appreciation of the arts and which assist artists, arts organizations and arts collectives in the pursuit of their goals.

Open letter to the Yukon government
An open letter to the Yukon Territorial Government (published in Tuesday's April 4th, 2000 issue of The Whitehorse STAR)
From the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) - The voice of 240,000 teachers across Canada
Dear Mr. McDonald, The eyes of Canadian teachers are focused on your government’s recent actions with respect to public education in the Yukon. It’s a tale of cuts in services and unnecessary confrontations with teachers at the bargaining table. At a time when there is a significant teacher shortage looming across Canada, this climate will greatly impede efforts to attract and retain qualified educators for the classrooms of this territory. The national picture is not a rosy one. There will be a deficit of 20,000 teachers by 2001, many in the areas of senior sciences, music, French and special needs. CTF firmly believes that investing in children is the best infrastructure investment we can ever make. Our children hold the key to the future viability of our publicly funded health care, pension and other social benefit plans as well as to lower taxes and debt reduction. The more successful they become, the more they will contribute to society and the more secure we will all be that our highly regarded social programs and services will continue to be available to all Canadians.

    Climate Change
Climate change has been called the most significant environmental issue the world has ever faced. Atmospheric scientists agree that the temperature of the earth's atmosphere has risen sharply in the last hundred years, and will continue to rise faster than ever before. Humans contribute to this temperature change by burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests that absorb greenhouse gases. And scientists are now projecting with some confidence that the warming of our planet will be even greater in our polar region. The science behind climate change is complex, but most people agree that a sudden and drastic change in the earth's climate will have profound effects on humans, animals and plants. These links will help you to learn more:
We're already seeing the effects of a changing climate in the Yukon. Arctic ecosystems are particularly sensitive to changes in climate; melting of permafrost may disrupt wildlife migrations, change growth and distribution of plants, and lead to the release of even more greenhouse gases from our frozen soils. These changes affect our northern lifestyle and culture along with industrial activity in the north. The Yukon government is strongly committed to reducing local emissions of greenhouse gases, examining the impacts on northerners, and preparing for the changes to come. A range of initiatives, from energy efficiency to wind and solar power, are in place to reduce our production of greenhouse gases. An Inventory of

    Solid Waste Regulations:
New Rules For Managing Yukon Garbage
Why New Rules Were Needed The average Yukoner generates almost 2kg of garbage every day. That's nearly three-quarters of a tonne per year. Garbage can contaminate the air, land, and water, and turn wild animals into nuisance animals. Your own pets could be harmed by eating garbage. In the past, a land use permit was the only requirement for building and operating a dump. These permits did not provide the environmental safeguards that Yukon citizens repeatedly called for. The Yukon government responded to public concerns by introducing Solid Waste Regulations under the Environment Act in January 2000. These regulations set modern standards for building and operating dumps and landfill operations in the territory. Solid Waste Regulations Permits are now required for designing, operating, maintaining, and closing dumps and landfills on Commissioner's land in the Yukon. Permits are required for owners of:
    • Waste Disposal Facilities that dispose of garbage generated by the public; and

Government of Canada and Yukon Government Funding Helps Launch Two New Climate Change Projects in the Yukon
Whitehorse - Yukon residents will soon learn more about the possible impacts of climate change on their environment thanks in part to the Government of Canada's Climate Change Action Fund (CCAF). Environment Canada Minister David Anderson and Yukon Renewable Resources Minister Eric Fairclough today announced a total of $299,500 in funding to support the Northern Climate Exchange. Minister Anderson also announced that the Government of Canada will further contribute $142,000 from the CCAF to the Impacts of Climate Change on Migratory Caribou. The projects are:
    • the Northern Climate Exchange , an innovative approach to looking at the impacts of climate change in the North that involves both traditional science and traditional knowledge ($153,500 from CCAF and $142,000 from Yukon government), and the Impact of Climate Change on Migratory Caribou: Herd-specific Assessments and Applications of Tools to Evaluate Public Policy Options , in which funds from the Government of Canada will contribute to a continent-wide assessment of the impacts on two of the twelve major migratory caribou herds in North America ($142,000)
"Climate change is the type of issue where everyone from businesses, communities to individuals can play an important role in finding solutions," said Environment Minister David Anderson. "These partnerships will provide a better understanding of climate change science and help develop innovative Canadian solutions to address climate change."
