The Yukon
The Land
The Yukon Territory in Canada's northwest covers 483 450 km
The Yukon can be divided into two broad geographical regions: taiga and tundra. Taiga is the boreal forest belt that circles the world in the subarctic zone, including most of the Yukon. Tundra is the vast, rocky plain in the arctic regions, where the extreme climate has stunted vegetation.
Above the Arctic Circle (latitude 66° north ), the Yukon is known as "the land of the midnight sun" because for three months in summer, sunlight is almost continuous. In winter, however, darkness sets in, and the light of day is not seen for a quarter of the year.
The History
The name Yukon was first used by the Hudson's Bay Company trader John Bell in 1846. He called it "Yucon," derived from the Loucheux Indian word "Yuchoo," meaning the greatest river. The Yukon River is the fifth-longest in North America.
The Yukon was the first area in Canada to be settled by people. Anthropologists believe the ancestors of the Amerindians may have inhabited the Yukon 10 000 to 25 000 years ago when they migrated from Asia across a Bering Sea land bridge.
The first modern European visitors were Russian explorers who travelled along the coast in the 18th century and traded with the area's Indians. Sir John Franklin anchored off the Yukon's arctic coastline in 1825, and the Hudson's Bay Company moved into the interior in the 1840s.

Tombstone Territorial Park Management Plan
The Tombstone Territorial Park boundaries were approved by the Tr'ondek Hwech'in and Yukon governments in December of 1999. The only change the Yukon Government made to the Steering Committee's recommendation was to exclude a Corridor, along the Dempster Highway from the park (see map). This area was excluded to provide for continued highway maintenance activities and possible future pipeline development. The Yukon government has committed to manage the Tombstone Corridor exclusion in a manner that complements the Park management plan and in a fashion that does not compromise Park values. For this reason, management planning for the Park and Corridor are taking place concurrently. A Tombstone Corridor Working Group has been established and will be responsible for recommending a management plan for the Corridor to the Yukon government.

Alaska's Source for Oil and Gas News April 2002 Vol. 7, No. 14 Week of April 07, 2002 Yukon government close to toppling after resignations Gary Park, PNA Canadian correspondent Yukon Premier Pat Duncan, the most outspoken Canadian supporter of an Alaska Highway gas pipeline, is on the brink of losing control of the territorial government. Three members of Duncan’s Liberal caucus in the legislature have resigned, accusing the premier of not listening to caucus members. Their departure leaves the Liberals with a minority government, holding eight seats, against five New Democrats, the three new independent members and one member of the Yukon party. Don Roberts said he left because Duncan and her advisers made a lot of decisions, leaving the caucus to operate as a rubber stamp. Mike McLarnon said Duncan took most of her direction from unelected Liberal party members, staff and the federal government. Wayne Jim, the third to leave the government ranks, said of Duncan: “It was her way or no way.” Both Jim and Duncan were fired from cabinet in early January, but said their action in jumping ship was not a case of revenge.

Yukon Government Transition On April 17, 2000, Yukon residents went to the polls and elected a new Liberal government under the leadership of Premier Pat Duncan. On May 5-8, David Zussman and Erika - Kirsten Paupst traveled to Whitehorse to join the transition team, which included a long-time PPF supporter, Gordon Ashworth. The transition team advised Ms. Duncan and her caucus on how to implement the policies identified in their campaign platform. Almost all the members of the government caucus had been elected for the first time. Dr. Zussman briefed them on their new roles and responsibilities, as well as on their relationships with the public service and their constituents, and the structure and proceedings of caucus and cabinet meetings. In addition, Dr. Zussman worked with the Premier-elect to develop the mandate letters to the members of Cabinet, detailing the government's key priorities and the role she expects each of them to play in achieving those goals. And, because Yukon is a small, closely-knit community, Dr. Zussman briefed the government members' spouses on what to expect over the next four years, and provided tips on how to maintain a relatively normal family life. He also met with newly appointed Secretary to Cabinet, Mr. Kirk Cameron, to discuss the responsibilities and challenges he will face in his new position.
