Black ground color with bold contrasting stripes continuing all the way down to hooves; rarely any shadow stripes, except occasionally and faintly on hindquarters. Seven to ten neck stripes; three to four vertical body stripes. Short, upright mane. Tail terminally haired. Shoulder height 50 inches; weight 500-600 pounds.
From northern Zimbabwe to the Sudan in East Africa. Inhabits grasslands, especially those with scattered trees.
In the wild, non-selective grazing of available grasses, especially grass stems and sheaths. Teeth very high crowned, an adaptation to chewing silica-rich grasses. Large barrel-shaped body holds a very large amount of relatively un-nutritious grass. Very dependent on water. At the zoo, they eat hay and alfalfa pellets fed inside at night.

    A popular time for all the animals at HiView is "Dinnertime" Llamas are also right at home in the environment of HiView. Some facts about the LLama Llamas are members of the Camel family. Technically, they are camelids.
    In the New World, there are four different camelids. Three are in the genus Lama, the llama, the alpaca, and the guanaco. One is in its own genus vigunae, the vicuna. The llama and the alpaca are both domesticated animals, and have never been wild. The llama is considerably larger than the alpaca. In South American, llamas are used for pack animals, production of fiber for rugs and ropes, meat, and even used their dung for fuel. In South America, the alpaca is used for fine fiber production, meat, and their dung for fuel.

    About this page... For three summers during my undergraduate career at the University of Puget Sound, I worked for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries as an analyst and computer support person. For the most part, the databases I used were accessed via batch on some old IBM mainframes (using JCL, for heaven's sake!). My co-worker, Bill, was a big tea drinker. In fact, he bought Red Rose tea in bulk. In the spirit of modern cereal manufacturers (I guess), Red Rose decided to include a "prize" in their boxes of tea bags. One such prize turned out to be a small (approximately 1 inch tall) ceramic zebra. Later that day, our co-worker on the other side of the cubicle, Francis, received an interesting delivery in the mail. Well, actually, it had to be delivered to her on a hand-cart. Somehow, she had accidentally printed off several reams of unneeded printouts. Bill and I enjoyed giving Francis a hard time when such things happened... and she enjoyed razzing us from time to time, too. For some unknown reason, Bill and I decided to give her the Zebra as a reminder of her error. From that point on, the Zebra became a symbol of errors, screw-ups, mistakes, and general flakiness. Needless to say, the Zebra rested atop my monitor often. Gradually, I became known as
